As expected the Panthers activated RB Jonathan Stewart, who expects to play tomorrow against the visiting Falcons.
Panthers activate Jonathan Stewart from PUP list | ProFootballTalk
Stewart was on the physically unable to perform list for the Panthers’ first seven games with an ankle injury. Stewart, 26, rushed for 336 yards on 93 carries in 2012 for Carolina. He figures to be a key part of a backfield that includes DeAngelo Williams and Mike Tolbert. For his career, Stewart has gained 3,836 yards and 27 touchdowns on 818 carries (4.7 ypc). With Stewart joining the roster, the Panthers waived running back Armond Smith. Smith appeared in five games for Carolina this season, rushing four times for five yards.
I don;t expect to see Stewart handle the ball too much, maybe 6 to 8 touches which isn't much less than his typical work in the backfield platoon the Panthers favor.
It's interesting that the Panthers cut Armond Smith now after keeping him around after early season miscues. Will we see Stewart on special teams as a result? It seems unlikely since he hasn't played them in the past. I wonder how Smith will be replaced on the coverage team.
Stewart should revel in having this match up for his season opener. The falcons have struggled to stop the run and Stewart brings a nice compliment to the shifty DeAngelo Williams.
