This article is about what I would do to fix the Panthers if I was the GM. We can't just plug some holes and hope to get to a Super Bowl. We keep saying we have a talented roster, but we can't seem to win. So if I was the GM, I'd blow some things up. The point of this is for you guys to say what you would do as well. But since I'm no longer thinking about us picking 32nd, I might as well do this.
First of all, I'd fire all the coaches. I would do it now. Why not? Am I going to ruin our chances to win it all this year if I do? I'd probably let McDermott get a shot as the interim. Rivera and Shula would be gone. For the record, I was saying over the summer that we should keep Rivera, and I had confidence in Shula. That's changed, obviously.
Here is a list of guys I would definitely keep for 2014:
Cam, Barner, Ginn, Smitty, LaFell, Amini, Gross, Kalil, Kugbila, Olsen, Brandon Williams, Star, Short, Kuechly, AJ Klein, TD, Lester, White, Alexander and Norman.
I would keep Barner as a 3rd down back, but not to be the #1 guy. Everyone else is negotiable. That doesn't mean they're gone, but it depends on if we can get a good trade for them, or if they'll take a pay cut or contract extension.
For example, Hardy turned down an extension for $8 mil a year. I can't blame him. He's worth more. But with our current roster, I'd probably keep Alexander and Addison, and use Hardy money on a LT.
LaFell would stay, but he might end up being the #4 receiver because I'd definitely draft one in the 1st round. Gross would be moved to RT. Guys like Bell and Tolbert would get a shot to stay on the team. I mean they've done nothing to make me get rid of them, but they've done nothing for me to guarantee them a roster spot.
SO what do you agree with or disagree with? I know we have a lot of talent, but the collection of talent isn't winning, so maybe it's not as talented as we think. Maybe we simply overrate our guys, and many of them need to go.
