Rams vs. Panthers: Carolina picked by SB Nation to win Sunday

USA TODAY Sports

The Carolina Panthers are favorites! This feels strange.

A dominant performance over the Minnesota Vikings has improved the perception of the Carolina Panthers, and are now favored in Sunday's game over the St. Louis Rams.

SB Nation released its picks for the weekend, and Ryan Van Bibber believes the Panthers have a balanced offense that could prove to be the difference.

You never know which one of these teams is going to show up. It depends on how competent the offensive coordinator is that week. Mike Shula let Cam Newton throw the ball down the field last week, and balanced the offense with some of those running backs Marty Hurney left him. Brian Schottenheimer's DNA is laced with futility, but the Rams are a better team when taking a heavier dose of MartyBall.

The difference here is the tendency for the Rams defense to bite hard on misdirections. If Shula can fight his better instincts, the Panthers can beat the spread.

The pick: Panthers

Van Bibber is right on the money when comparing two inconsistent offenses. The similarities between St. Louis and Carolina continues as the Rams are facing their own offensive struggles with the overly-conservative Brian Schottenheimer on offense.

Since we're expecting one thing from St. Louis watch this week be the first time the Rams make Tavon Austin the focal point, throwing off the Panthers' defensive game plan.

There's no question the Panthers have the talent, now it's time for the team to execute. These are the kind of games Carolina has to win if they hope to unseat the New Orleans Saints at the top of the NFC South when the face them later in the season.
