The National Football Post.com has posted the snaps played by every 2012 draft, along with their 2012 salary, showing their cost per each snap played. It makes the Panthers draft look very good, with only WR/PR Joe Adams above the average cost for where he was drafted, but punter Brad Nortman was between the 2011 and 2012 averages. Here are how the Panthers draft picks rank.
Pick Number - Snap Number - Cost Per Snap - Name
9th - 1004 - $2,278 - MLB Luke Kuechly
40th - 933 - $ 962 - LG Amini Silatolu
103rd- 596 - $ 852 - DE Frank Alexander
104th - 67 - $7,565 - WR/PR Joe Adams
143rd- 895 - $ 491 - CB Josh Norman
207th- 146 - $2,806 - P Brad Nortman
216th- 284 - $1,428 - S D. J. Campbell
They also use 2011 7th round pick (by the 49ers) S Colin Jones of the Panthers as an example of a good value 7th round pick. He played 204 snaps in 2011, for a cost per snap of $1,959, and 271 snaps in 2012, for a cost per snap of $1,716. Here are the average cost per snap from the 2011 and 2012 drafts.
Draft Round - Snaps - Cost Per Snap
2011 Draft
1st - 19,686 - $3,263
2nd - 12,338 - $1,892
3rd - 8,854 - $1,958
4th - 6,307 - $2,431
5th - 5,127 - $2,606
6th - 4,347 - $2,911
7th - 2,719 - $5,793
2012 Draft
1st - 22,696 - S2,773
2nd - 19,728 - $1,218
3rd - 11,908 - $1,448
4th - 12,496 - $1,579
5th - 5,662 - $2,448
6th - 6,634 - $1,800
7th - 6,123 - $2,264
As you can see from the above charts, the 2012 draft had much more talent than the 2011 draft. The 2012 draft had twice as many snaps played by 4th and 7th round picks as the 2011 draft, with the 2012 draft having more snaps played in each round.
