According to a tweet by Panthers beat writer Joe Person, Ron Rivera interviewed former Bears ST Coach Dave Toub yesterday.
Toub was recently let go by the organization following the dismissal of former Head Coach Lovie Smith, so if Rivera wanted to hire him there are no promotional guarantees tied into bringing him on board. However, Person speculates that Rivera might have to offer him the title of Assistant Head Coach to convince him to come to Charlotte, as Toub has already interviewed for head coaching jobs both this year and last year, and could be on the short list for several teams now that he's available for work.
Hiring Toub would be a major coup for the Panthers, as his ST units in Chicago have often been regarded as among the best in the league (they have been in the top 3 in both PR and KR for the last eight years under his tutelage).
The Panthers might have an advantage to bringing him on board though, since Toub and Rivera have a history of coaching together both in Chicago and Philadelphia. It's possible that selling Toub on the ability to work with an old friend might be enough to seal the deal, but if it's not then Rivera should dangle that Assistant Head Coach title his way as well, because a good Special Teams coach is something the Panthers have lacked for several years now.
