Keeping it Positive: Panthers Week 3 Positives

Jeremy Brevard-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire

Putting all the negativity from the Thursday Night Football fiasco that was the Panthers 37-6 loss to the Giants let's instead see what good things we have to recognize. Yes believe it or not I have found some positives in the Panthers 1-2 start.

It only feels right for me to focus on the positive stats, trends and performances so I'm very happy for this Coors Light series accentuating the reasons to celebrate. Let's start with a few team leaders.

Sacks Leader: DT Dwan Edwards 3.5 - Color me stunned our team leader is a DT we picked up on waivers after the final roster cut down. Rather than focusing on the fact others are not getting sacks lets celebrate we have a DT that is making an impact.

Tackles Leader: S Charles Godfrey 26 Combined - We often questioned Godfrey's tackling ability last season but I would say he has shored that up a good bit. We'll ignore the issue with a safety leading in tackles for now!

Yards per Reception: WR Brandon LaFell 18.2 ypc - LaFell is averaging 18 yards per catch and seems to save some of his bets for 3rd down. I'm really liking what he brings to both the passing and running game.

Yards Per Pass Attempt: QB Cam Newton 9.6 ypa - The Giants game aside the Panthers still have an effective vertical passing attack. On any given Sunday they can put up 30 plus points on any team.

We also have some individuals who have stepped up and provide some nice performances, after the jump...

CB Josh Norman - The rookie has shown nice aggression and is stout in run support. He is 2nd on the team in tackles after all. Once he learns to judge routes a little better he could be just the CB complement we have needed opposite Chris Gamble.

RT Byron Bell - After a rookie season and the first two games Bell has gone from a shaky UDFA to one of the Panthers best linemen.

DE Frank Alexander - Another rookie that has stepped up and made impact plays. Alexander has been able to get pressure the middle and use his big wing span and good timing to bat down some passes. The future is bright for this big guy.
