Newton denies report he's seeing 'mind coach'

This story is starting to get a little strange. Early Sunday morning ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported that Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton is seeing a 'mind coach' to help improve his sideline demeanor. On Monday the organization stated that they didn't organize it, but did Tweet out that Newton sought help on his own, curiously this Tweet has now been removed from the Panthers' official account; now Newton is denying he's seeing one at all.

Jonathan Jones of the Charlotte Observer wrote that Newton 'confirmed he's not seeing a mind coach' saying:

"I have not hired a sports psychologist [...] I have no idea where that came from. I have a strong support system in my teammates, coaches and family. My focus is on improving this week and getting ready to play Atlanta."

Support system or not, there's nothing wrong with getting professional help if you're unable to get past something yourself. Obviously there's still a huge stigma surrounding mental health, but Ron Rivera doesn't see a problem with it:

"I've got a guy on speed dial that is a sports psychologist that I've talked with since 1999, and he's been outstanding with me [...] So I see no issues with it. I think it's great that he's trying to be proactive and help himself, if that's what he's doing."

For now we'll need to file this one away as 'we have no idea'. Whether Cam is, or isn't getting help is inconsequential– as long as he changes his attitude on Sundays.
