Mind over matter: Cam Newton attempts to get his head straight

Stay connected for news and updates

An early morning report Sunday from ESPN's Chris Mortensen said that Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton was seeing a 'mind coach' in an attempt to correct his attitude, and demeanor on Sundays. Despite being an immensely talented QB, there is a concern that Newton's hubris could be his downfall– typified by Steve Smith's strong words to the quarterback about moping on the sideline, and not learning as he percieved Derek Anderson and Jimmy Clausen to be doing.

Our own BW Smith had some harsh words for Newton on Friday, and he was right on the money; Cam needs to decide right now whether he'll mature as a leader like Eli Manning did, remain talented but petulant like Jay Cutler, or completely lose his team and flame out like Ryan Leaf. Harsh comparisons for sure, but all fair.

Without many more tools than a Google search, I sought to find what a 'mind coach' actually is, and the results vary from books about the power of positive thinking, to hypnotism. However, it's most likely Cam Newton will be working with some form of cognitive behavioral therapist to re-train his brain, and learn how to suppress destructive emotions and reactions that keep people at a distance.

If this kind of coaching was forced on him it wouldn't work, but according to the Panthers organization he is seeking it out himself. There's little reason to look at this as a negative, and I'm happy to see Newton has identified this as a problem, and it looking to fix it.
