Hard to figure out where to start, and I feel like this is Sean McDermotts problem as well (figuring out where to start). Last season fans got to watch the greatest offensive production in Carolina Panther history, yet we still had a losing record because our defense couldn't hold ground. Most of us let it slide a bit because we were using wal-mart stock boys as LB's due to the plague of injuries. Many put alot of blame on 3rd round rookie DT's who were pushed into starting jobs before their time. Well, this year we have 4 very capable LB's, veterans holding down the DT position, and still our defense gives up points like a division 2 college team playing against national champs.
I was unhappy when we picked up McDermott for the simple fact that Philly fired him because he gave up so many points. So far in 19 games with the Panthers, he has done much of the same. I felt that with Rivera helping out some that he may be able to dial it in here, and with the all the talk about how "aggressive" we were going to be on D, I was a bit excited to see what he could do. Unfortunately we haven't seen very much of this aggressive/hybrid defense that was supposed to put fear into opposing offenses. The blitzes are usually delayed, and with the CB's playing 15 yards off the WR's, opposing qb's just throw quick slants and kill us. I'm not putting 100% of the blame on our DC, but his scheme didn't work in Philadelphia, and is obviously not working here. He's improved a bit with the redzone defense this year, but I feel like we would be better off with Trgovac, or even Meeks back as our dc as sad as that sounds. It's going to be a long season of giving up record amounts of yards/points if we keep doing the same things we're doing.
As for the players on defense, i think Nakamura is probably the weakest link. He's around the ball alot, but he tackles like a middle schooler, and his help in pass protection isn't as good as Sherrod Martin. Maybe it's time to revisit Martin and see if the brief loss of his position helped him learn anything?
Big Money is being outplayed by a 4th round rookie, and the Kracken isn't playing much like his moniker would suggest. All of our LB's are doing a decent job, but our out of position on more plays than they should be. The bright spot would be the acquisition of Dwan Edwards. Leading the team with 3.5 sacks in 3 games from the DT spot is great, but he cant do it all by himself. Someone is going to have to bring it from the edge, and our backups are putting up more sacks than our starters. Alexander with 1 sack, Keiser with .5 isn't all that great, but our starters have posted nothing on the sack statline.
Well, enough of me ranting, what do you guys think about the play of our defense, and the DC's squishy scheme?
