Bet you didn't see this one coming? On a day where teams were thinning their rosters, the Panthers became buyers as they added S Colin Jones from San Francisco to their roster.
Jones will not be asked to play a position, but rather do more of what he did for the 49ers– be a special teams ace. Thus far the Panthers have looked woeful in coverage this preseason, and thankfully this addition will help stop the bleeding.
Why did the trade happen today? Normally picks are given for players teams know will be cut, but who will certainly be taken on waivers prior to their claim. Given his ability as a special team's ace, and his age (Jones is just 24), there's little doubt a team would have claimed him quickly if/when he was cut.
A 6'0", 208lb safety– Jones didn't see any time playing the position for SF. He started as a senior for the TCU Horned Frogs, where he totaled 80 tackles, 3 sacks, and 1 INT in his final year.
