Teams have started making their roster cuts, and for most it's just taking out the trash, but is their any treasure in that trash?
So far few talented players can be found among the players cut, but some are interesting. Some name players were cut, like the Seahawks T O, Duce Lutui, or OT Alex Barron, but certainly no starting talent that would interest the Panthers. However, special teams coverage is still a problem, and 1 or 2 of the cuts might help.
1. LB/TE/WR/S/DE/FB Jameson Konz (6'3 1/2", 234) - A 3rd year player with the Seahawks, who's still recovering from a torn ACL in the 1st half of last seasons 1st game (like Gettis). He was "waived/injured", meaning if he's unclaimed they will likely place him on IR, for the 3rd year in a row (hip in 2010, and ACL in 2011). He was the #245 pick of the Seahawks in 2010, after having a fantastic Pro Day, where he ran a 4.38-40, a 6.93-3 cone drill, and a 4.25-20 yard shuttle, with a 46 inch vertical jump, and a 10'8" broad jump. Konz comes at a bargain price, the 3rd year minimum of $390,000, and could well be worth a waiver claim, even if he has to go on IR for this year. Danny Kelly wrote this about Konz at Fieldgulls.com, "could have found a spot as a core special teams guy, but I don't think he's back to full speed at this point, rehabbing his knee (from last seasons torn ACL).
2. CB Ron Parker (5'11 3/4", 200) - Another Seahawk, from Newberry College (SC), who the Panthers tried to hide his Pro Day workout (4.34-40) before the 2011 draft. It's very unlikely the Panthers will claim him, but you never know.
3. SS Josh Barrett (6'1 3/4", 225) - He's a 6th year player who was cut by the Patriots, he's a good special teams player, who ran a 4.34-40, with LB size.
4. RB Tyrell Sutton (5'8", 213) - The Seahawks cut him even though he had 7 carries for 59 yards this preseason, but the Panthers don't have a need at RB.
As you can see the pickings are pretty slim, but if any other interesting cuts I'll try to post them.
