FOXBORO MA - JANUARY 16: Mark Sanchez #6 of the New York Jets and Wayne Hunter #78 celebrate on their way to defeating the New England Patriots 28 to 21 victory over the New England Patriots during their 2011 AFC divisional playoff game at Gillette Stadium on January 16 2011 in Foxboro Massachusetts. All we've heard from Jets fans the past week is 'Tebow' and 'Wayne Hunter sux'. Well After previously giving Hunter a vote of confidence Rex Ryan now says he has been moved to a back-up role. His replacement is 3rd year player Austin Howard from N. Iowa. who will b emaking his first start...against Panthers DE Charles Johnson. So what do Jets fans have to say about Austin? It's not glowing:
RT Wayne Hunter Has Been Benched - Gang Green Nation
Let me be clear; Austin Howard did not earn this position. Wayne Hunter simply lost it, reinforced with his atrocious play last weekend against the New York Giants. In that sense, it is good that the team has finally been forced to act with regard to Hunter's play. In addition, it is good that he is returning to the position that he is best at, the jumbo tight end role. In that role, he will help run block, but not pass protect as much.
He later says that if Howard was better than Hunter then the would have made the move a while ago. The Jets will find out real quick if Howard can handle the big time, or should we say 'Big Money'?. I say let CJ get a couple licks on Sanchez and or Tebow and then let him hit the showers. CJ looks like he is ready for a breakout year.
I expect Applewhite to follow CJ on the left side and then later Van Bergen. I imagine Howard will only play a half unless this is a serious audition. It didn't sound like it from what Ryan was saying. It sounds like a permanent move which I don't really agree with. What if CJ trashes Howard so bad his confidence is destroyed and he ends up selling used furniture? Then you gotta ask Hunter to go back to RT with your tail between your legs and hope Hunter gets his groove back. In that case you deserve what you get. ;) I'm sure their GM is a busy man right this moment.
