If we're breaking in outside the open thread, consider it meaningful. This afternoon in Spartanburg, with practice now just ending Josh Norman totaled four interceptions (yes, four!), and broke up another two passes.
After missing significant time over the last two weeks due to a tweaked hamstring, it appears Norman is ready to stake his claim to the starting spot across from Chris Gamble. On his fifth breakup of the day Norman quipped he didn't know why the defense was throwing his way, to which a salty Greg Olsen retorted that three days worth of practice, and fresh legs definitely helped.
Based on his near constant chatter with Steve Smith it's clear than humilty isn't one of Norman's strong points; surprising for a small-school, fifth round rookie. However, if he stays within himself who cares? Maybe being embarrased a little by a rookie is good for a team accused of sleepwalking through Saturday's game vs. Houston. During the first preseason game Norman spent significant time on the sideline talking to Chris Gamble. Now, perhaps they were talking about the weather, but I'd like to imagine he was getting tips from the veteran.
Interceptions are exciting, but it's all for naught if he can't back it up with solid coverage. Given Norman is likely to face Legedu Naanee this Friday (provided he starts) we should get a good opportunity to see the ball skills he exhibited today.
