If Ron Rivera had said there is only one Panther on the roster who doesn't have to compete for his starting job in training camp certainly you would have said...the long snapper?
"I think the only one that’s not competitive is our long snapper. I think J.J. (Jansen) is pretty solid in that position unless I come out of retirement," said Rivera, a Chicago Bears linebacker for nine seasons.
So was Rivera a long snapper? If so I didn't know that. If not, then there goes BAMF again, basically saying he could be the long snapper if he wanted to! I can hear him say this now: [using The Most Interesting Man in the World voice] "I rarely play special teams, but when I do...I play long snapper!" ...lol
So Cam Newton has to compete, Jon Beason, Charles Johnson will all have to compete. Even the Rules & Regulation himself Steve Smith has to compete. The good thing is, all these guys were going to compete anyway.
"You say what positions are comfortable? Hopefully, none of them are," Rivera said. "Cam said it best. He said, ‘I need to make sure and keep pushing myself to be the best I can be.’ "
Yes, you might think the full page ad in the Charlotte Observer by Ryan Kalil was meant for the fans but I bet that ad was more for his team mates. They have all been put on notice. The Panthers will be Super Bowl contenders in 2012!
Typing this is killing me because once I click 'enter' I'm packing up and heading to TC. Time to go witness the start of a SB run in person. I'll be on the open thread later starting at 4:30pm.
Keep Pounding!
