We are a little more than a week away from the opening practice of the Carolina Panthers 2012 training camp. Are you excited? Better yet, are you going? If so let's meet up. The Panthers have a number of additional activities lined up making the weekend a family affair. Starting on 4:30pm on Saturday the have the kick off party:
Back to Football Party - Celebrate the start of training camp at Gibbs Stadium Plaza from 4:30-6:30 p.m. and following the Panthers' practice from 8:30-9:30 p.m.. Festivities include live entertainment from the band Back Nine, performances by the TopCats, Sir Purr and Purrcussion, face painting, food, giveaways and more. Admission is free.
I'll be bringing my soon to be 10 year old son to start his official Panther face painting indoctrination. Then on Sunday they have a kids camp of sorts:
Play 60 Family Fun Day - Enjoy the Play 60 Kids Combine, appearances by the TopCats and Sir Purr, face painting and more activities for the whole family from 5-7 p.m. The Play 60 Kids Combine promotes the NFL's Play 60 youth fitness initiative through a variety of fun, kid-friendly activity stations.
Sound like fun? Well then come meet us. I have all the details after the jump...
If you can't make it rest assured we will keep you informed of what's going on, who's looking good, who puked on the sideline and/or who passed out from the heat! We will have open threads throughout and try to throw in a few pictures if the technology cooperates.
It all starts with move in day on Friday, which by the way always provides some interesting photos seeing what these guys bring with them. Remember many of these guys live in large, expensive houses but for three weeks they will be bunking in college dorms.
Weekend meet up details after the jump...
If you plan to be there please chime in and let us know. I'll be staying at America's Best Value Inn ($65 including tax) but there are other (nicer) options. Cheaper ones too but I wouldn't recommend those.
TC Meet Up Spot: Once at TC if things are laid out like they have in the past once you enter the gate you'll go down a hill to the playing field fence, then turn right and follow the path over to the field closest to the locker room. This is the best spot to get autographs as the players come and go to the locker room. To the right is another hill with a single tree on it. That's where we plan to be. I should have my green Sunbrella up unless its really overcast.
Saturday Lunch Meet-up: Wild Wing Cafe (directions here) 3pm.
Sunday Breakfast Recommendation: Papa's Breakfast Nook - I'm not setting a meet up time as I have no idea how long I might sleep! Papa's has a great breakfast though when you do get up.
Sunday Lunch Options: If you are into nostalgia then you should eat at least once at The Beacon, Spartanburg's most famous eatery. I would compare it to The Varsity in ATL or Athens. If your looking for something a little less greasy then I recommend Gerhard's Cafe. They have some of the best German food you can find.
All of these recommendation's are within minutes of Wofford except for maybe the Beacon which might be 10-15 minutes away.
Things to Bring:
- Wear your Panther colors at all times!
- Copy of the roster to answer the age old question: "Who the eff is that?"
- Sunscreen & bug spray
- Hat or beach umbrella
- Stuff to be autographed and plenty of sharpies
- Camera or camcorder
- Your android or iPhone so you can stay in tune with CSR at all times!
