This isn't exactly new news, the Colts tried to trade Freeney before the draft, but found no tackers, probably because of his high salary. Today's story is from WalterFootball.com, and it's more speculation than hard facts, but it should still be of interest to the Panthers. They speculate that the Colts will again try to trade Freeney near the end of training camp, and they list the 3 teams most likely to be interested in adding Freeney to be the Saints, Jets, and Falcons.www.walterfootball.com/nfldraftrumormill.php
They expect that the Colts will only be able to get a 3rd or 4th round pick for Freeney. I'm not saying that the Panthers should try to trade for Freeney. The Panthers have already traded away their 3rd round pick in the 2013 draft, and would be very unlikely to trade away their 4th round pick as well. Freeney is on the downside of his career, with likely only a few years left, so a Panthers trade for Freeney just seems like a poor fit. However, for teams ready to make a run for the Super Bowl, like the Saints, Jets, and Falcons, all in need of a better pass rush, it might be a very good move that puts them over the top. That could be bad news for the Panthers chances over the next 2 seasons, if Freeney were to go to the Saints or Falcons, but I don't feel that's enough reason for the Panthers to step in, trying to get Freeney so they don't.
