NFL.com has been putting out their Top 100 players of the upcoming season and three Panthers landed on it. C Ryan Kalil came in at #99 and WR Steve Smith was actually spotted a little higher than Newton at #35 . But nobody is questioning Smitty's spot but I hear many questioning Newton's lofty status which is just 9 spots behind SB winning QB Eli Manning.
Newton on the other hand is a rookie QB who just completed arguably the greatest rookie QB season in NFL history:
Cam Newton lands at No. 40 in 'The Top 100' - NFL.com
There was a strange moment in the office Tuesday: One of our editors, an admitted Carolina fan, was wandering the newsroom with a pet project. Carrying a Panthers greeting card, he was asking coworkers to predict the team's record next season (these are the pressing questions in this office). Guesses ranged from 6-10 to 11-5, but most predicted an improved season; many leaned toward a playoff berth. This is what Newton has done.
So by what measure does someone question a #40 ranking? Now if you were building a team from scratch I imagine Newton would be considered much sooner than #40. Though they haven't finished the ranking process I feel like #40 is about right for the sophomore signal caller. How about you?
