I knew exactly what Cam Newton meant when he said he was a 'bad teammate' last season as did most Panther fans. He was being rhetorical and did not mean literally that he was a 'bad' teammate as in everyone hated him. But I guess those that just latched onto that characterization have continued to ask him about that. So much so he felt the need to clarify:
"I didn't really come out and say I was a bad teammate," Newton told NFL Network's Jeff Darlington on Thursday. "It was just some things I feel like I could have done differently. I think that's my overall maturation in Year 2. Just analyzing what I did last year, some things that were good, some things that were unacceptable, and I just pointed out the things that were unacceptable and things I'm working on this offseason."
Well you kind of did say that Cam but again, I knew what you meant. In reality you were a great teammate last year and to a man I'm sure your teammates would agree. The fact you are looking back at your performance and every aspect of the season tells me you will be an even better teammate in 2012.
When Cam sat on the sideline with the towel on his head I knew that would get blown up into more than it was. I did cringe a bit because I didn't like him acting like he was dwelling on his mistakes. He did make a few for sure. But the flip side is I would have liked it even less if he was laughing and goofing off after a loss or bad play. I'd much rather see he act like he cares.
I find myself still thinking and talking about Cam in a guarded fashion because I'm too afraid of being let down. He hasn't done much at all yet but he has all the tools and the right attitude. But I will tell you Panther fans I am downright excited about this kid, excited about this team and excited about the coming season. As much or more since 2004. Though most NFL fans may think this is their year, that they can win a SB I really do think Newton will bring us a Lombardi trophy. It's no longer IF. It is simply 'WHEN'.
