You had minor controversy this time last year after the Panthers drafted Cam Newton. Newton had worn the #2 at Auburn and many assumed Newton would prefer to carry on his same number. The problem was that it was already being worn by 2010 starter Jimmy Clausen. Clausen would have preferred #7 at the time but that number was being worn by P Jason Baker who also had no interest in giving up his number. Hence Newton went with #1 which in hindsight seems like a good number for the #1 overall pick.
Once Baker was released we wondered when it might cause a jersey shift and part of that speculation has now come true. Clausen did switch to #7 recently leaving the #2 jersey wide open. It would appear Newton though has developed a shining for the awesomeness of being '#1':
But now Cam is used to No.1, so I hear he told the Panthers thanks but no thanks -- he'd stay with his number and not make the switch he wanted 12 months ago. With No.2 still vacant, new Panther punter Nick Harris jumped on it, so that's where we sit today -- Newton at 1, Harris at 2 and Clausen at 7.
If Clausen had no allegiance to #2 then why not sell it last season? Easy money baby! A Clausen #2 would have been a collector's item if Newton had then worn it last season. Okay, maybe a collector's item for those facinated with the macabre...but I digress.
So I think Newton has made a good call here. I mean, once your #1 its hard to settle for #2 right? Since the Panthers have already turned in their roster no need to worry any further now, the numbers are set for the season for those that stick through the preseason.
Cam Newton has always and will continue to be #1 in Carolina blue!
