Panthers 2009 Draft Get's A "C" Grade, How?

Today, cbs sports/nfl draft scout writer Rob Pang posted a story looking back at the 2009 darft, and regrading the teams picks. Shockingly, Rang gave the Panthers a C grade for that draft, while 5 teams received a C- (Falcons, Chiefs, Dolphins, Chargers, and Seahawks), and 3 teams received his lowest grade a D (Browns, Broncos, and Cowboys). Rang must love the Panthers to have given them anything over a D.

2009 was the year of the famous Everette Brown (6-1 1/2, 256, an "official" Combine 4.73-40, "unofficially" a 4.63-40, with only a 31.5 inch vertical) draft trade (getting the #43 pick used for Brown & #111 pick used for RB Mike Goodson, from the 49ers, in return for the Panthers 2010 1st round pick). Brown was projected to go around the middle of the 1st round, probably to the Bills at #11 (they instead took 3-4 OLB Aaron Maybin, who only lasted 2 years), but they passed over the #46 pick DE/OLB Connor Barwin (6-3 5/8, 256, an "official" Combine 4.66-40, "unofficially" a 4.56-40, and a Pro Day 4.47-40, a 1.53-10, and a 40.5 inch vertical), who had a great 2011 season as a 3-4 OLB, after being held back by a broken ankle in his first 2 years. The Panthers also passed over 2 more good DE's, #70 Michael Johnson (6-6 7/8, 266, an "official" Combine 4.75-40, "unofficially" a 4.66-40, a Pro Day 4.49-40, a 1.56-10, and a 38.5 inch vertical) who's been a good backup/sometimes starter for the Bengals, and Henry Melton (6-3 1/2, 269, 4.64-40) who had around 7 sacks for the Bears as a DT in 2011.

The Panthers also had another trade they made during the 2009 draft, trading their #202 pick to the Raiders (they selected TE Brandon Myers), for the Raiders #216 pick CB Captain Munnerlyn & the Raiders 6th round pick in 2010 (#175 DE Greg Hardy). At first look this was a great trade for the Panthers, but the next pick after the Panthers #202 pick, at #203 by the Titans was CB Jason McCourty (5-11 7/8, 188, 4.30-40), now the starting CB, maybe even the best CB in that draft who I wished the Panthers would draft in the 3rd round.

Here is how the 2009 draft looked for the Panthers, and it's a nightmare:

43. DE Everette Brown (6-1 1/2, 256, 4.73-40) - Cut after 2 years.

59. S/CB Sherrod Martin (6-1, 198, 4.52-40) - A starting Safety, but a very poor tackler.

93. DT Corvey Irvin (6-1 3/8, 301, 5.01-40) - IR as a rookie, and cut his 2nd year.

111. RB Mike Goodson (5-11 3/8, 208, 4.54-40) - Traded after his 3rd season for OT Bruce Champbell.

128. FB Tony Fiammetta (6-0, 245, 4.63-40) - Cut after his 2nd season.

163. OG Duke Robinson (6-5, 329, 5.27-40) - Cut after his 2nd season, and almost never played.

216. CB Captain Munnerlyn (5-8 5/8, 182, 4.53-40, 1.58-10) - A good nickle back, but rosted as a starting CB in 2011.

The 2009 draft was so bad for the Panthers that after 3 seasons the Panthers only have 2 of their 7 draft picks are still with the teams. They have at least that many players from that draft that were selected and cut by other teams, #41 CB Darius Butler and #69 LB Jason Williams. How could anyone honestly give the Panthers a C on that draft?

Here is what the 2009 draft could have looked like for the Panthers:

43. DE/OLB Carnor Barwin (6-3 5/8, 256, Pro Day 4.47-40, 1.53-10) - was #46 by Texans

59. DT Roy Miller (6-1 5/8, 310, 4.93-40, 1.68-10) - #81 by the Bucs, good until 2011 injuries

93. CB Jason McCourty (5-11 1/2, 188, 4.30-40) - #202 by Titans, their starting CB

111. RB Mike Goodson (5-11 5/8, 208, 4.54-40) - the Panthers pick, now traded

128. WR Johnny Knox (5-11 1/2, 185, 4.34-40) - #140 by Bears, very good until 2011 broken back

163. NT Myron Pryor (6-0 1/4, 319, 5.01-40) - #207 by Patriots, a backup

216. OG Lance Lewis (6-2 3/8, 303, 4.76-40) - #246 by Bears, a starter in 2011

The 2009 draft was loaded with D-line talent, and here's some more the Panthers could have drafted, #70 DE Michael Johnson, #72 NT Terrence Knighton, #105 DE/DT Henry Melton, #115 NT Sammy Lee Hill, #61 CB/S Sean Smith, #84 Mike Wallace, and TE Jared Cook.
