Thanks to 'Whitt2k1' for the fanshot, we now have another UDFA to keep an eye on- and he looks to be one of Derek Leazer's patented 'deep cuts'. Michael Avila out of San Jose State is an extremely slight 5'9", 170 lb wide receiver who reportedly clocked a 4.36 in the forty yard dash at the Spartan's pro day; and you guessed it- another tie to head coach Ron Rivera. This time it goes beyond BAMF's college, and back to his high school where Avila is an alumni. Thanks for the Monterrey County Herald we have a quote from Ron Rivera.
"You can't coach speed. It's one of the traits we look for. There are no guarantees. But sometimes you find a diamond in the rough.''
In this search for diamonds the Panthers have ensured they've left no stone unturned. Just as Cam Newton removed the stigma for athletic, spread offense QBs- one wonders what Victor Cruz did for small school, UDFA wide receivers. Now everyone is hoping to find the next Cruz, and the Panthers are really digging deep to find some of these small school guys. This one is the longest of long shots Carolina has brought in; Avila amassed only 31 receptions and 247 yards while at SJSU. Oh, and that's not in 2011... that's in his entire college career.
We'll get a look at these guys in camp, but nobody can blame the team for trying.
