Earlier today I was thinking about the similarities of both Peyton and Cam. Though both QBs are very talented they are different types of QBs and comparing them physically would be pointless. However, this is meant to compare the way both QBs entered the league and how both of their careers could end up being parallel. The Colts left Baltimore for Indy in 1984. Lack of attendance was seen as a major factor. After the move the team continued to struggle both on the field and with the low fan-base. The Colts finally made the playoffs in 1995 with a guy named Jim Harabaugh as the QB.
Fast-forward to 1998 and the Colts select Peyton Manning No.1 overall. Now let’s look at the Panthers, we all know how and when we came in the league and the early success we had. Though we did struggle for years after and are fan base never was anything to brag about. Basically we were one of the lowest if not the lowest market in the NFL. We finally made a return to the Playoffs with Jake Delhomme. Though we’ve never been consistently successful and are Fan base and market has improved over the years but it’s still at the bottom end of the NFL. Fast-forward to 2011 and we select Cam No.1 overall.
Back to Manning, as we all know Manning had a very good rookie year as he threw for over 4000 yards, however his team struggled to win games. Now let us look at Cam. He wowed everyone with his unbelievable rookie season and broke Manning’s rookie record while we the team struggled to find wins. Also both seem to strive to be the very best at their positions and are extremely hard workers who seem to have a desire to master there craft. Manning went on to turn the Colts into one of the largest markets and largest fan bases in the NFL.
I see Cam doing the exact same thing. I never used to see the Panthers on national television commercials only on local markets. Now not a day goes by that I don’t see a Cam Newton commercial. In the Gatorade commercial it shows him wearing his Panthers uniform and running out onto the field at BoA. It honestly shocked me to see that. The only other national exposure the panthers got was the Steve Smith "this is sportscenter" commercial.
To conclude, Cam Newtons career already has seemed to follow a close resemblance of Mannings. If it continues to follow this course, we could see a very large increase in Market and Fan base as I believe we already have. Newton can turn us into a Force. Both on the field and off.
