Don't Sleep On Brandon Hogan

Brandon Hogan was hurt and received very limited play last year as a fourth round selection in the 2011 draft. With all of the talk on the selection of Josh Norman, I think it's important to remember that Brandon Hogan is probably the guy with the best chance of taking over the number two corner position. He may only be 5'11", but what he brings to the table is something the Panthers have shown a lot of value in recently: A tough, aggressive mentality. He absolutely abused anyone and everyone on the field in college and showed he had the ball skills to match. I'm really excited about this guy.

Hogan is not an interception machine, but he's got the instinctive ability to find the ball and swat it away. He also excels at being able to lay out a receiver while attacking the ball with either his helmet or with a rip of his arm. I love his mentality and I think that's probably what caused the Panthers to give him a shot. Just looking at his stats will tell you this guy loves contact: 74 total tackles in his Junior year is eye-popping to me at the corner position. At the very least we will have a solid nickel or dime corner who can make tackles on special teams.

That being said, I'm really excited to see what this guy's made of because he's got physical tools and a chip on his shoulder. Josh Norman is very raw, but he's one hell of a ball hawk and has the physical attributes that match up very closely with Chris Gamble's. If Hogan can lock up the #2 corner spot and allow Norman to take the proper time to hone his skills and watch Gamble, then it would mean that the Panthers picked up two starting caliber corners in the 4th and 5th round (Amazing value by Hurney). I'm treating Hogan as a draft prospect for the moment at the least because of how limited his role was this year, but from the couple NFL plays I've actually seen and the college film I've watched he's got the potential to be just what the doctor ordered for our D.
