Panthers Cut MLB Phillip Dillard

MLB Phillip Dillard (6-0 1/4, 245, 30 1/2 inch arms, 9 1/2 inch hands) the Giants #115 pick in the 2010 draft, was cut by the Panthers today, after spending 2011 on their practice squad. He had good workout numbers at the 2010 Combine, an "official" 4.64-40, a Pro Day 4.53-40, 1.58-10, 18 bench reps, 31.5 inch vertical, 9-4 broad jump, 7.16 3-cone, 4.43-20 yard shuttle. His being cut certainly isn't a shocking move, he was on the roster bubble, but it's a little surprising given Beason's health, and that the cut came this early.

I was also surprised that the Browns cut UDFA CB Derrius Brooks today, because of a failed physical (I wonder what the problem was?). Brooks is from Western Kentucky, is only 5-9 1/2, but has 33 3/4 inch arms, longer than any DB at the Combine, and is one of the best return mem in the 2012 draft class.

Brooks was also the fastest CB in the draft at a 4.29-40, with a 1.46-10, and his Pro Day 6.61 3-cone would have tied for 3rd among DB's at the Combine. Brooks isn't a small CB, though being only 5-9 1/2, he has good bulk at 192 pounds, and average sized hands (9 1/4 inches), to go with his very long arms (33 3/4 inches).

Here are the other workout numbers for Brooks, 13 bench reps, a 38 inch vertical, 10-5 broad jump, 4.17-20 yard shuttle, and a 11.37-60 yard shuttle. I hope the Panthers bring him in, check him out, and sign him (unless his failed physical is really serious). I'm usually against the Panthers bringing in small CB's, but with Brooks very long arms, and great speed, he's not the typical small CB.
