I don't want to overlap too much on BW Smith's most excellent post on the 'Keep Pounding' slogan added to the Panthers jersey but I saw this and thought some of our newer fans might some more details. As you know 'Keep Pounding' is now embroidered inside the collar of the new Panther jerseys made by Nike. Here's a little more detail on Sam Mills and how Keep Pounding became the team slogan:
In 2003, Mills was diagnosed with cancer. He kept working while undergoing long rounds of chemotherapy. The night before the Panthers’ home playoff game against Dallas following the 2003 season, Mills gave a memorable speech to the team.
Mills: "When I found out I had cancer, there were two things I could do – quit or keep pounding," Mills told the team at one point. "I’m a fighter. I kept pounding. You’re fighters, too. Keep pounding!"
Amazing that something so simple could be so right and so motivating...
LB Mark Fields was diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease right around the same time as Mills so the two went through treatment together. Fields returned to action the following season and made the Pro Bowl in 2004. Prior to the 2005 season Fields found out his Hodgkin's had returned and decided to retire though the Panthers had offered him a contract and indicated they would honor it (going from memory here). [crap, getting choked up again]
Words can't describe how awesome the decision to include the slogan on the jersey is.
