Today has been a wild day for Panthers fans, as we have seen a little wheelin' and dealin' on Marty Hurney's part. We have seen a trade to acquire Frank Alexander, and also have seen us take Joe Adams, a name many of you will probably recognize. Then came round 5, where we saw the Panthers take a position of need in Josh Norman. Josh Norman played cornerback at Coastal Carolina University, where he logged 13 interceptions over his 4 year career, along with 196 total tackles and 35 pass deflections. He is a very fluid athlete with lots of natural athleticism, who can match up with many of the larger and faster wide receivers with his speed and long arms. Norman was originally pegged to go in the 4th round, so Carolina got yet another player who fell in the draft. In his draft profile on NFL.com, Norman was compared to Steelers cornerback Ike Taylor.
More on Josh Norman and where he fits into things after the jump...
Norman can play man and zone equally well and was a physical presence on the outside. He understands when to take risks and when to play back, and he is physical when he makes his decision to come up. He supports the run well and is a reliable tackler.
Norman has not faced top competition, and will need to contribute on special teams to stick, which he hasn't done much in college. He is taller and can struggle with some hip/transitional movements moving to his left, but it's not a major concern.
Look for Josh Norman to come in and immediately contribute on special teams, and compete for the second corner spot opposite Chris Gamble, which is far from assured for any player on our roster. Now we have Darius Butler, Brandon Hogan, Captain Munnerlyn, and Norman all vying for a starting job, and even the nickel corner spot. It'll be a fun battle Panthers fans, lets all just sit back and enjoy some highlights, then take a second to vote on the pick!
