Lately all we have been focused on is the 1st round.. Let's draft Luke Kuechly, no let's draft Quinton Coples, no let's draft Michael Floyd, no let's draft Melvin Ingram and so on and so on. But after thinking about it, this year I think it's going to be the 2nd round where we find our treasure.
If anyone ever wanted a perfect example of what the saying "quality not quanity" means, you would need to look no further than this draft class. I would say this draft class consists of 5 true elite prospects, then after that the talent drops off quite considerably. Who do we have? Andrew Luck, Robert Griffen, Matt Kalil, Morris Claiborne and Justin Blackmon (despite several NFL scouts doubting if Blackmon is elite.) If this draft class was just made up of those 5 players one could argue this would be the best draft class in NFL history.
Unfortunatley for us, it is not made up of just those 5 players and there arent only 5 teams in the NFL with us being one of them. Who do we have after those 5 prospects? Quinton Coples, all the physical talent in the world but a prospect with high bust potential that several NFL scouts have questioned his worth ethic and desire to be great. Dontari Poe, a prospect who has horrible game film but shined at the pro day, if the NFL was a strongman contest Dontari Poe would be a Hall Of Famer unfortunatley for Poe, the NFL is not a strongman contest. Luke Kuechly, great prospect but would he get enough playing time behind Beason, Davis and Anderson to warrant the pick at number 9? Let's see who else? Fletcher Cox, ok I suppose but again, how big of an upgrade is he over Ron Edwards
, Fua, Mcclain etc? A big enough upgrade to warrant the number 9 pick? The Jury is still out on that one.
I really think the 2nd round is where things get really fun. I think this will be the year "The Hurney Curse" is broken, and we will nab a true star in the 2nd round. To be perfectly honest, a lot of these projected 2nd round prospects are just as good if not better then some of these projected 1st round guys. Lets name a few shall we. Chase Minnifield, Alameda Ta'amu, Brandon Thompson, Janoris Jenkins, Marvin Mcnutt, Dwight Jones, Nick Toon, Jayron Hisley, Jerel Worthy. Thats just to name several, you want my honest opinion? Give me Ta'amu over Poe in a heartbeat, give me Dwight Jones over Michael Floyd any day, Give me Chase Minnifield or Janoris Jenkins over Dre Kirkpatrick any day.
The bottom line is unless Blackmon or Claiborne fall to us, im just not sold on any of these other prospects with the exception of Michael Floyd and maybe Luke Kuechly. For some reason there are guys that are extremely good that are projected to go in the 2nd round, now ofcourse I realize out of the names I mentioned, all of them wont fall to the 2nd round, but all it takes is one.
