Pat Y was keen enough to remember a stipulation with Travelle Whartons's cap hit and remind us why the Panthers may still be active in free agency into June:
Laurin (Chatham,VA): Since the Panthers extended Steve Smith's contract and resignedJordan Senn, where does that put them in respect to the Salary Cap?
Pat Yasinskas: Looked at that this morning. Think they're about $5.1 or $5.2 million under. Also, keep in mind, they're lugging around the full $7.6 cap hit for Travelle Wharton until June 1. After that, they can spread that between this year and next.
So if my math is right the Panthers could free up an additional $3.8M in June by spreading the Wharton cap hit over two seasons. $3.8M could garner a decent free agent, at least any still on the market come June 1st. I've got a list of some free agents still on the market, after the jump...
Here are some UFAs still on the market:
WR Braylon Edwards - No denying his talent on the field but just wonder if he creates problems off the field or worse, in the locker room.
DT Aubrayo Franklin - I'm not sure why this guy is still out there...maybe asking for too much money?
LB EJ Henderson - Is he healthy? Can he stay healthy?
DE Matt Roth - Would provide some depth but not much of a pass rusher
CB Marcus Trufant - If we fail to land a CB int he draft I would hope we would talk to Trufant Off the market
Any interest in these guys?
