Though I still think the most likely trade back scenario for the Panthers would involve QB Ryan Tanneyhill and the Seahawks or Cheifs a second scenario could actually be a repeat from 2007. I'm drawing this possibility from ESPN's AFC East blogger who says the Jets might be willing to trade up with the Dolphins for RB Trent Richardson
Team No. 2: New York Jets
Analysis: Would the Dolphins do business with a division rival? That's tough but not completely foreign if it helps both teams. Richardson once again is the focal point. If he falls to No. 8, that increases the value of Miami's pick. The Jets don't have a huge need at running back. But the team will run the ball a lot next season, and Richardson would be perfect for New York's "ground and pound" offense. A pairing of Richardson and Shonn Greene would take a lot of pressure off quarterback Mark Sanchez. Would the Dolphins help the Jets' offense, led by former Miami head coach Tony Sparano, get back on track? Miami could probably get New York's No. 16 pick, a second-rounder and a later pick in return.
I can't see the Dolphins dealing with the Jets in any fashion but I guess its fun to postulate. More likely in my view if Tanneyhill is gone at #9 for the Panthers (maybe Dolphins trade back with Chiefs or Seahawks for Tenneyhill) and Richardson is on the board maybe the Jets try to beat the Bengals to it.
A trade back with the Jets to #16 would be very similar to the draft day trade these two teams orchestrated in 2007 that is to date one of the best trades in franchise history:
Jets received #14 overall in which they took CB Derrell Revis
In a 2012 version the Panthers would get the #16 and #48 for their #9 which would seem like a pretty good deal. In this scenario I see the Panthers going with a pass rusher at #16 and BPA at #48, hopefully a CB if they didn't already get one at #40. Would you welcome this trade Panther fans? Do you think the Jets would want Ricardson enough to trade up?
