Another Possibility for Cam’s Backup
Now that we have our franchise QB for the next 12+ years, it seems this offseason there has been a lot of talk in finding Cam’s backup that will best keep offensive continuity if we lost Cam to injury. Some people have made the case for using a late round draft pick on a guy like Russell Wilson; others have stated they would like to see a Free Agent like Dennis Dixon or Josh Johnson. The thinking behind getting one of these guys is that they are low risk acquisitions and have the athletic ability to step into our offense and be able to run the spread option type plays we grew to love so much this year. I would like to add another guy to this list that I hope Chud, Rivera, and Hurney take a look at this offseason, Jason Campbell.
Campbell is an UFA and after Oakland gave up a 1st and 2nd round pick to get Palmer I don’t believe they are thinking about re-signing Campbell. Compared to the three QBs mentioned above Campbell is not quite as athletic, but he does have 3 seasons with at least 200+ rushing yards. He is also older than the other three (just turned 30), it could also be a plus having a more experienced QB around while Cam develops. The main reason I would want Campbell is because I believe he is a much better passer than any other athletic QB available. Guys like Wilson, Dixon, and Johnson would be able utilize some of the designed QB running and option plays; I am just scared if Cam were to go to for a couple of games our offensive would resemble this year’s Denver Broncos offense with Tebow. The main identify of our offense is the aggressive "Air Coryell" which attacks the defense down-field through the air. Campbell has the arm strength, proven QB ability, and knowledge of the system that If Cam were to go down for a game or two our passing offense would not change too much. Obviously we would lose a lot of mobility from our QB in running the ball, but with two All-Pro talent RBs they should be able to handle that piece of the offense.
It is possible that Campbell is offered starter type money and/or a starting job by another team, and if that is the case I would say that the Panthers shouldn’t get into the bidding. However, if he can be brought in making backup QB money this is an avenue the Panthers should at least explore.
As this is the offseason I am just thinking out loud about how to make our team better, what do you guys think about the idea and do you have any other backup QB ideas?

two auburn talents under center.
oddly enough, this is prob the most glamorous choice anyone’s put forward. it could work,,,
At first I made the bad assumption you were going to paint Campbell as a running QB,
but you made a nice argument. Really our offense would work best with a back-up who has a good passing skillset. Maybe we have been pigeon-holeling ourselves by only looking at guys who are known runners, especially since several of those guys have not been successful. However, I do think Campbell ends up with a team where he can compete to be the starter.

I thought about adding Campbell among my list of potential free agent targets
However, in my opinion he got a bit of a raw deal in Oakland. That being said, if he goes somewhere else, he might base that decision on the chance to be starting. Everyone knows Cam is the guy in Carolina, so the key to finding his backup is making sure they know exactly what their role is on the field.

yes
Campbell would fit nicely in the system, if (as DoC said), he’s willing to accept a backup role along with a backup check. We don’t need to address this issue in the draft, certainly. We do have the luxury here of waiting to see who’s left waiting for a phone call when it’s all said and done.
So much to be done, and so few people willing to do it for me.
We dont need an athletic QB
Anderson is a perfect back-up. If Cam gets hurt or can not play for what ever reason, we will change the offense. not drastically, but it will change, no matter who we have behind him. The basic change the that we will take out the QB runs, which isnt going to have a huge effect. Everyone keeps mentioning that we need an athlete. well we dont, we need someone who can make the throws and reads for this offense. Anderson is a vet who is accustomed to and very experienced/successful in this offense. All we need is someone who can make the reads and throw in a vertical offense. Anderson is perfect for the job.

I agree we don't need an athletic QB
I think Campbell is a better passer and athlete than Anderson. If Newton were to go down for a game I would feel we have a decent chance to win with Campbell, with Anderson I think it is too much of a drop off.
I'm not so sure that Anderson would be much of a drop off.
Especially in the passing department.

Campbell has always had issues pushing the ball down field.
Instead of the pump and go, it has always been the pump and whoa! with him. That was one of his biggest problems in Washington. He’s had ton’s of coaching by some of the best coaches in the game and he’s never been much more than a mediocre QB. I’d rather stick with D.A. or another more conventional QB than go with someone like Campbell. I’d prefer to keep things as they are or move Jimmy and bring in someone else to be the #3.

In my opinion the very nature of this post highlights one thing
Newton doesn’t need to be running as much. This is not his fault because of the volume of quarterback designed runs this season. I still note that Newton still didn’t run the ball on designed pass plays anywhere near preception 49 scrambles out of his 126 rush attemps… Aaron Rodgers run the ball during designed pass plays 9 more times. It is funny really how perception doesn’t match reality in this regard.
In order for the Panthers and Newton to really be great on offense then it needs to be with Newtons arm. That 126 carries needs to be down to around 80 and it needs to come from red zone attempts because that should remain a major aspect of red zone offense. And also allow Newton to find yardage himself with scrambles
The perfect Panther offense would see Newton running 80 to 100 times a year… and that number should drop slowly as he matures. I still believe in order to come out of the NFC during this era of quarterbacks in this conference you need to have either a elite defense. Or your quarterback needs to produce in the 35 too 45 TD range total to win the division. And to me that means Newton has to take a jump in the passing game.
I agree 100%.

I have to say, being an Auburn alum
Just the discussion of such a possibility warms my pea-pickin’ little heart.
I wouldn't be opposed to Campbell
But I think we could get a lot of what he’d bring for cheaper if we’d just re-sign Anderson.

I’d say keep Anderson, he is less banged up and a better match for the offense since he practiced all year as opposed to Campbell who was on IR this year not to mention he has had anew offense cord. every year he has been in the nfl i believe
He's not the same kind of QB as Cam
Not trying to be racist but we need to stop just throwing going:
“(Insert black QB name here) should be our #2 QB” Campbell isn’t a great runner at all and wouldn’t be too much of an upgrade over Anderson. I like the guy and think he deserves and will get a chance to start somewhere else

I really haven't been much a part of these discussions
But I’ll throw one name out there for debate:
Chandler Harnish from Northern Illinois
All 3 QB's listed
are better than typical back ups and too expensive. If anything we need to be grooming a project to sell later.
