Mocking In The Free World: The Latest From Mocking The Draft

The folks over at Mocking the Draft have a full 5 round mock they put up yesterday, and while I'm not a huge fan of all the picks I see the rationale behind it- rush the passer. Simply put, the Carolina Panthers need to get a more reliable and consistent pass rush and in turn that will make the defense better.

The following is directly from the linked mock draft, with my commentary

1st round: Quinton Coples, DE- North Carolina

I have problems with Coples as a prospect, as I feel he gets lazy a lot. If Rivera can get him to play to his full potential every down then he could be a dominant player.

More after the jump

Star-divide

2nd round: Vontaze Burfict, OLB- Arizona State

He tends to lose himself at times and can become undisciplined, but he has ability to be a nasty pass rusher at the next level from the OLB position.

4th round: Don Barclay, OL- West Virginia

A big 6'4", 310 lb player who played LT for the mountaineers. Projects better to RT or RG at the next level, but a decent mid-round addition.

5th round: Coryell Judie, CB- Texas A&M

A smaller sized corner with a lot of potential coming off an injury... sounds like Brandon Hogan 2.0, but without the character concerns. Seems like another solid mid round pick, I just hope we don't wait until the 5th to address the secondary.

I love the potential

Of the first 2 picks. Coples and Burfict are both boom or bust prospects. Both have some serious maturity concerns, but the talent is there. Rounds 4 and 5 are ok, but I think we could come away with better value.

we couldnt get much bigger potential in those first two picks

Id be disappointed if we took Coples

I don’t argue with the idea of upgrading the position but I don’t see any DE prospect in this draft worth a top ten pick. Coples just looks like a smaller, less talented version of peppers in my opinion

The only pick I like is Burfict.

Coples is maybe the only guy I would be completely unhappy with for our first pick. I could live with anyone else.

Coples

Has as high a ceiling as any defensive player in this draft…To get a player with that kind of potential at pick 8-9 would be pretty outstanding value-wise…

by kittylover on Feb 3, 2012 9:12 PM EST up reply actions

I think your ceiling is fairly limited

If your effort is questioned on the college level. He may have a lot of talent but it means nothing if he takes off plays. Maybe he can be coached up to his potential but it’s a big risk considering there will most likely be other players with equal potential at positions that we have a greater need for

by hey. on Feb 3, 2012 9:25 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Everyone seems to forget 'they' said the same "he takes plays off" thing about

Suh, Von Miller, Jermaine Gresham, Dareus, Trent Williams, Mario Williams and Mark Schlereth butchered Haloti Ngata for taking plays off. (look it up, they all got hit at some point for that same tired mantra)

I’m not going to sit here and say he looks like he is playing hard every down with reckless abandon. But the fact of the matter is some people are so gifted they make things look easy. Is Coples one of those types? I don’t know. But it sure seems like it to me. All I know is if he somehow manages to fall in our laps and we draft him I will be tickled pink. Because in my opinion he’s the most gifted defensive lineman in the draft and we’d be hypothetically getting the second most important position on the field 8 or 9 picks into the draft.

by mlrupert on Feb 4, 2012 12:07 AM EST up reply actions

I dont think Coples has anywhere close to the ability of Peppers who was notorious for taking plays off and he disappeared at games at a time. IF we draft him ill learn to deal with it and pray Rivera can make the most out of it but he would not be one of my first picks of players likely available at 8-9.

But im also not looking at Coples with Tarheel colored glasses either….

But that doesn’t have anything to do with not wanting him in the first round. There are other options available with pick 8/9 that could help the team.

I would be satisfied with this sceneario only because...

I know if Rivera and Hurney are taking these players it’s because they believe in their potential and clearly know the task at hand.

I’m also very excited about what Rivera is going to do with Hardy. I watched in one of the Panther videos that one of the Panther’s staff member came a across a former coach of Hardy who was coaching at the combine and told the Panther member that if they could get Hardy’s head straight he would be a especial player or something along those lines. That’s Rivera’s specialty.

Bottom line is that if Hurney and Rivera take those players is because they have a purpose.

by Efury on Feb 3, 2012 9:08 PM EST reply actions

I picked yes only because this is under the assumption that Hurney....

and Co. were the ones pulling the trigger. As we all know, he doesn’t miss in the 1st round very often, which is obviously the most important pick. It’s always hit or miss in the rounds that follow, but I suppose that’s with most teams. I admit that this is a lame reason to vote yes, but I do have faith they will get it right.

On another note concerning Coples, I always hear and read about this work ethic issue. What needs to be determined is if this is a motor or fatigue issue. I can guarantee that facing double and triple teams will tire an individual out faster than going mostly one on one with a guard or tackle.

Also, another knock on him is that he did most of his damage against lesser teams. That’s certainly true, but doesn’t any player, regardless of position, do the same thing? Does the fact that he got 2 or 3 sacks against Duke mean that the tackle and/or guard he faced is as poorly talented as the team that he plays for? If I remember correctly, Cam’s work ethic was called into question and we all know how that’s turned out so far. If Hurney and Co. want to know anything about his motor, the best way to do so is to ask the people that were around him on and off the practice field. What was he like in the weight room? How hard did he practice? Was he one of the last guys to leave the practice field? I have a feeling that he’s going to look superb at the combine anyway, and when the commissioner comes to the podium to announce our first selection, he will have already been picked.

by Derek Leazer on Feb 3, 2012 9:22 PM EST reply actions

I don't remember anyone questioning Cams work ethic

The knock on him was that he is a “me first” type of player and that his selfishness could alienate a locker room. He definitely disproved that either way but I don’t remember anyone claiming that he was lazy

by hey. on Feb 3, 2012 9:29 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

There were analysts saying he was lazy

But everything from anyone who had coached him or played w him said the exact opposite. That’s what he’s saying. Analysts are calling Cople lazy and saying he takes plays off. So we approach it the same way w Coples and ask his teammates and coaches.

by DoubleT-Dlo on Feb 3, 2012 9:35 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Oh I don't remember that.

But the biggest testimony for a players work ethic is the film. While film doesn’t really depict a qb’s laziness you can clearly see that coples has taken plays off. The main thing they have to try to figure out Is whether he did it because of physical exhaustion or if he just didn’t give a shit

by hey. on Feb 3, 2012 9:45 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

You got it. This can still be something that is difficult to determine,

which brings up the obvious controversy of whether or not to pick him if he is still on the board when we make our 1st round selection.

Yea

So if it’s conditioning would you want him?

by DoubleT-Dlo on Feb 3, 2012 9:51 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Hmmm

Correction: Analyst, fans and haters said that

by DoubleT-Stewart on Feb 3, 2012 9:48 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Eh....

I dont agree with picking coples only cause of what I heard about him taking plays off and not showing up like pepper shaker. If we go D line in the first I would rather Ingram. I don’t agree with picking a LB in the second either. I think we have bigger concerns at CB that should be addressed. With BPA for our needs being the philosophy I wouldnt be upset with any position they choose rather I agreed with them or not. I am more concerned in the player.

by DoubleT-Stewart on Feb 3, 2012 9:43 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Why wouldn’t you want a linebacker in the 2nd? Especially a pash rushing one? I know we are both in the not at all optimistic camp on TD coming back.

by DoubleT-Dlo on Feb 3, 2012 9:48 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Not saying we are completely set at LB but I don’t think we are struggling. I believe with just beason being back our LB core dramatically improves. On the other hand in a QB pass happy league if we don’t have someone that can cover someone we are screwed. I hope hogan works out but I have not seen enough of him to say he is the answer. So long story short CB is a more dire need imo.

by DoubleT-Stewart on Feb 3, 2012 9:53 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Gotcha

Well you already know my thoughts on Hogan. I think we snagged something there. And if we don’t pick a corner in the 1st I think that’s Rivera way of verifying that. I think if we draft burflict and a D linemane that’s Riveras way of saying we are ok at cb

by DoubleT-Dlo on Feb 3, 2012 9:56 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Can't argue with that...yet

I would hope that is the mindset if they do pick up a LB. I hope hogan is a shear beast at CB. But if they did pick a DE in the first I am not sure whether I would want a CB, S, or LB.
If hogan is the answer I wouldn’t mind picking another CB to replace captain.
Wouldnt mind a safety to replace martins sorry ass. Hopefully he is just having a sophomore slump and jumps back to form.
LB would prob be last but If there is a premier pick at LB when we draft in the second that looks better then a CB or S available I say jump on it.

He was told by medical professionals that it was gonna tear and the only way to fix it was surgery. If they did know of his achilles tendon being bad with the impact of that sort of injury being what it is (never being the same after one ruptures) why would we have signed him to such a big deal so hastily?

Their Mock Is Too much Of A Risk

Coples would be the ideal pick, if it weren’t for his on again off again motor. Burfict’s coaches have all tried to get through to him, and failed. The West Virginia O-Lineman is a reach in the 4th round, and CB Judie runs is listed at 5-11, runs a 4.39-40, but will likely go in the late 3rd or 4th round.

by PanthersRoar on Feb 3, 2012 10:30 PM EST reply actions

Don't have a problem with the last two picks.

But I just don’t like Coples, those motor issues are just too much for me. Really hate the Burfict pick. Don’t like him as a prospect, because I don’t really think he has the mental attributes to be the kind of dominant player he should be. If anyone could make him reach his potential, it would be BAMF, but I don’t know if I’d take both of those risks with my first two picks.

I don’t think it would completely set us back. As long as we don’t trade future picks, I really wouldn’t mind it. Our offense would be set for the next 4-5 years.

The fact that we had one of the worst defenses in football last year

And our #2 corner gave up the highest percentage of passes in the whole league. Blackmon would be a luxury, and giving up a 2nd rounder (which would leave us with nothing until the 4th) would set the defense back immensely.

I understand your point

but I disagree. I think our defense was in shambles and with make shift players we were able to pull out (that’s what she said) 6 wins. I am just saying if you had the opportunity to lock up your offense for the next decade then why not do it, and then work on Defense, which I think with Beason’s return, a healthy Edwards, Hogan playing, and the rest of the guys getting a full off season in this defense then we can survive next season and then use all 2013 picks on D.

Just saying, usually D players are in a abundance compared to players in the mold of Megatron, and the likes of.

Will we trade up? Highly doubt it. I just don’t buy into the fact it would set us back.

There is no player in the mold of Megatron in this draft

A guy like that comes around every few years. It’s not worth locking up our offense when we we’re already top ten with a rookie QB. Our defense is horrid, ignoring it this year would be a shame and a waste of a season.

I would like to see the Panthers get a lineman in the first round but not sure if

another DE is the anwer. Granted it could not hurt, but i think the o-line is where the most need is at the moment. To many cracks are starting to show and we need to protect our Franchise QB. We also have fallen in the habit of late in drafting undersize CBs late in the draft in hopes they will do something, so I hope we adviod that pit fall this year. One more point, Hurney had mention getting his QB another weapon so a WR in the first round would not be to surpriseing.

This is kind of hard to speculate on because

they usually draft by best player available, regardless of need, which I totally agree with. So whomever is on the board at that time, which will probably be Coples along with Fitzpatrick and maybe another top person and their postion, is who they will pick. I have trust in the pick.

1 – Whitney Mercilus > Quinton Coples; Michael Brockers > Quinton Coples
2 – At some point this offseason, I believe our front office will address the linebacker position in some way, shape, or form. Burflict would probably be the BPA, and if there is one coach who can maximize Burflict’s potential, it would be Rivera. But, I think a team like Pittsburgh or Baltimore will snag him up at the end of round 1. Drafting someone like Zach Brown or Sean Spence in round 2 seems more realistic to me.
4 – Barclay could push Bernadeau and/or Zach Williams out the door in training camp. If Otah ends up on IR again, Barclay could push Byron Bell for the RT job. If the front office lets Hangartner and/or Schwartz walk, then this pick would obviously be even more vital.
5 – Judie seems to fit the mold of what the Panthers look for in DB prospects, and he would provide excellent value in round 5. With Steve Wilks coaching our DB’s, Judie could turn out to be a solid player.

imo brockers is better than both of them

He’s young with huge potential, can pack some weight on his massive frame. Mercilus is too small for me and I see him as more of a situational pass rusher in the nfl (greg hardy anyone?) Coples well, its well documented the problems with his ‘laziness’. Not a good reputation to have coming into the draft, a risky proposition… Too risky in a top ten pick. It would be the end of the world if we drafted coples but I’m really against mercilus

by LimeyPanther on Feb 4, 2012 12:07 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

IMO, Brockers is too raw to be a top ten pick.

Mercilus’ one year of production worries me, and I think that Coples is the best pass rusher in the draft, an area we were sorely lacking. And, as far as the ‘laziness, and work ethic’ issues, many players have had their work ethic and desire questioned, i.e. Haloti Ngata, Mario Williams, and even Ndamukong Suh. I think people were concerned by the fact that he didn’t put up double digit sacks this year, despite being double and triple teamed each game.

Turnstile is a FA this year.

I don’t see the Panthers being crazy enough to bring Bernadeau back. As for Zack Williams, he was a rookie who was bitten by the IR bug in preseason. I don’t see us letting Williams go unless things really don’t work out.

Coples

I wouldn’t mind the Coples pick. I think this draft is weak with sure fire starters but loaded with upside players, so we should take another shot on potential. Just with Cam this new rookie salary allows you to do that. Our DL could be similar to the Giants with the addition of Coples. I don’t really see the lazy thing. I just think at times DE gets lost in the game. It’s just the nature of the position.

At 8 or 9 I would run to the podium if he were there.

Would I argue with a trade for Blackmon, or drafting Jeffery – No I would not. I think Hurney is underrated and under appreciated in this town.

As far as Hurney is concerned, I’m not sure where the dislike of the guy comes from draft wise. At least nearly all of his 1st round picks have been hits. Yeah he has missed on some second rounders and such, but no GM is going to hit on 100% of their drafts picks. Not to mention he would be learning from Beason, TD, and James Anderson.

I feel that his team mates could keep him on the straight and narrow.

I'm trying to remember if charles johnson had work ethic questions back in 2007

What’s funny is he learned from peppers about working hard and crafting his technique LOL

sorry but I dont realy like the first two

If your criticisms are correct which Im not doubting we cant afford to take chances on guys who have “got lazy” and “undisciplined” to their name imo. We dont know that Rivera is the kind of guy that can get the most out of players like this. Our defense needs help not crap shoots.

Gotta agree with the majority here...

I want nothing to do with Coples, especially given his “Peppers work ethic with not as much ceiling” reputation. Nor do I see a need to draft another CB (even in the 5th) when we already have five or six on the roster, and at least one more on the practice squad. I don’t know about Burfict, but I’m not sure I like what I’ve heard of his reputation either.

Honestly, I think we either need to look at DT for a little extra help (in which case, I’m edging towards Brockers) or help with the offensive line — I do not have confidence in Otah actually staying healthy an entire season, and I cringe at the thought of Bell being in his place. I’m not entirely certain who would be the best pick — DeCastro seems to be the prime choice right now, but I am interested in hearing more about Geoff Schwartz’s brother, who’s supposed to be pretty good as well.

I'm Fine With Couples If Dre Is Gone

If Kirkpatrick is gone then I have no problems with Couples. He would be the best available player at a position that is desperately needed. I believe Coach Rivera wouldn’t even give him a chance to try slack off. Also if Judie is still available that late you have to grab him. Good kid with shut down capability. Has steal written all over him.

For all of the people questioning Coples taking plays off

I suggest you watch film of his junior year…He was dominant. I think alot of this talk comes from the fact that the coaching staff was lame-duck and after seeing several teammates get hurt at the end of his junior season, I think he played to not get injured. I’m not saying it was a smart move on his part, but I do not think he is lazy…

So instead of taking plays off

He took a whole year off. That doesn’t make things better.

Is there an article or proof of Couples

being lazy? Or is this just hearsay?

And over there in the tree, is a chipmunk nest. And that right there, is our corn, best in the city, it's delcious. And that is a crazy lady. So now you pretty much know what I do. Pretty dang exciting, huh?

First-hand reports from fans

And a big drop-off in production doesn’t do anything to dispel the notion.
