The Peyton Manning - Jim Irsay Drama Continues
I realize this is a little off topic and more suitable for TMZ but what else do we have to talk about? You might recall just yesterday it was announced a doctor had cleared Peyton Manning to play football. Today we find out the ever clever Jim Irsay saying 'Not so Fast!":
"Peyton has not passed our physical nor has he been cleared to play for The Indianapolis Colts. Team statement coming on Friday," Irsay posted on his Twitter feed early Friday morning.
He's not cleared to play for the Colts nor has he asked Mr. Irsay, in a very nice manner, if he can play!...lol Stay tuned for Manning's response via Facebook.
Seriously, I'm sticking with my Manning to the Redskins prediction. I think Synder would love to nab Manning and try to stick it to Irsay (and the rest of us for that matter).
As an update, I'm sticking with the Flynn to the Dolphins deal as well:
Pack can't afford to franchise Flynn
For all those who think the Packers can put a franchise tag on QB Matt Flynn and then trade him, consider that the Packers would have to fit in the $14 million one-year tender by releasing players. They also would need to have a deal in place with Finley so that he could not walk away an unrestricted free agent. So, to do the Flynn maneuver, they'd have to sign Finley (and the others) AND find a way to clear $10 million to $14 million off their cap. It's not going to happen.
From Green Bay to Miami..I'm sure Flynn's family will be happy!

I don't understand all the Matt Flynn hype
He has one good game (awesome game actually) and everyone thinks he’s automatically a franchise quarterback. Didn’t anyone learn from the Kevin Kolb experiment? I don’t understand why any GM would spend so much money on an unproven QB.
I know, but I was just sort of amazed at the reaction from everyone after he had that great game
I blame the 24 hour news cycle for the over-hyping of Kolb and Flynn. Not that Flynn can’t be a good QB, but there isn’t a big enough sample size to justify the hype.
I think it has more to do with
Green Bays ability to draft and coach Qb’s
If that's true, why is Brian Brohm not in the NFL anymore?
Aaron Rodgers is the only successful QB they drafted in the last 30 years (probably longer). Remember the Falcons drafted Favre. Matt Flynn can’t be called a success yet because he had one good game.
He looked good last season
Almost led Packers to a victory against Pats @ Foxborough. He is a free agent with a good pedigree and in his limited opportunities he has made the most of them. Several NFL teams need a QB. Not a great draft for QB’s ready to start.
It isn’t ‘hype’, it is more of a practical need why Flynn is being discussed so much. He is going somewhere and will be a starter next season.
Matt Hasselbeck was selected by the Green Bay Packers in the sixth round (187th overall) of the 1998 NFL Draft.
Forgot about Hasselbeck
Still, the fact that some team is going to throw a bunch of money at a QB that has only played a few games in the NFL is, to me, a knee-jerk reaction. Like I said before, the Kolb fiasco is a perfection example of why a team shouldn’t spend a lot of money on an unproven commodity. That move alone, barring a 180 in Kolb’s performance, set the franchise back a few years. If you can get him for the right price, then I say go for it. But I don’t think he’s worth anywhere near what Kolb got.
He is not as good as Kolb
But as Panthers Fan, it’s fine with me.

He's the Matt Cassell IMO
And we all remember how that worked out.

Only thing that might help him is if Philbin installs the same type of offense they ran in GB in Miami. That will help Flynn succeed, though it will be interesting considering the talent gap between GB’s offense and Miami’s.

I don't understand it either
He has less actual play time than Cassel and Kolb, and look how those have turned out so far. I would be scared shitless to give Flynn any kind of big contract.

Thread is alittle old now so idk if anyone will even see this but don't knock cassel so hard.
He was a pro bowler last year wasn’t he? W a great td to int ratio. that whole team struggled at the beginning of the season. How much was on him?

just let manning walk?
that makes utterly no sense to me whatsoever. if i’m them i’m getting five picks for luck or manning, either one. period. think dallas cowboys in the 90’s. they ain’t gonna make it happen though. we’ll probably end up with more compensation for jimmy clausen then they get for a first-ballot hall of famer. no shit.
there are 28 million reasons why it will probably happen

another question.
hadn’t developed this yet when i wrote. they could get a second rounder in 2013 if he walked, but i wonder if cutting him means they don’t get a comp pick? if jimmy gets us a seven i’m proud, haha. if only the card’s hadn’t got fleeced already…
First of all, the highest compensatory pick you can get is a 3rd rounder. Second, I don’t know if you get one for releasing a player. I think you can only get comp picks if a player leaves via free agency, but I’m not 100% sure on that. All I know is the Colts shouldn’t be rewarded with an extra draft pick for cutting their losses by dumping a huge contract.

I may not always be right, but even a blind nut finds a squirrel every once in a while.
you would be correct - releasing players does not earn you a compensatory draft pick
you must lose more free agents than you gained and then the NFL determines your pick
They really have no choice.
They can’t pay Manning $28M based on the injury risk. They can’t trade him, because no other owner in his right mind would take that same $28M risk. They have to cut him. It’s the only way they can handle this that makes sense. The problem Irsay has now is he’s burned down the bridge that led to “cut Manning and re-sign him to a cheaper contract” by doing all this “high school spurned ex-girlfriend whining” horse shit on Twitter, so he has to release him and let him go somewhere else.
Personally, I hope Peyton is able to play a few more years, and I hope he signs with the Texans, Titans, or Jaguars; and I hope he wins three AFC titles while the Colts are “lucky” to break .500 over that time period. (Note: I would say Super Bowls, but Cam’s gonna take those.)

i like the way you think:)
there is the option of moving the first pick and ride or die with your boy. he’s gonna come back. that’s inevitable. however, “now is he’s burned down the bridge” as you so aptly put it. hell yeah, down with the colts. this will be HILARIOUS to watch, i’m sure.
To me, it would be a monumental mistake to trade the #1 pick...
Unless they trade it and stay in the top 5 and pick another QB (like RG3).

I thik if Manning really can play
They should keep him and trade the first pick and build around him. Get him some protection and keep him safe. I have a feeling (hope and pray) that Luck will be a bust in the nfl.
STICK THE KNIFE IN AND TURN IT!!!!!
i'm like bw...
you gotta have someone to groom. rgiii could get by the fifth pick if somebody moves up, but i’d bring in a suitor and stick with manning. derek jeter just ain’t as valuable to anyone but the yank’s, ya know. i hope cam newton retires with the #1 or #2 (whichever he wants) carolina panthers on his chest. i really, REALLY do!
i don't feel great about him busting,
but i honestly think cam is more exciting, “charlotte” (adjective) and “us” and will win more rings in his career. i hope and pray for that last part
Given the nature of this fiasco
It’s a losing situation for ownership. I have no doubts Manning will play again but it will not be with the Colts. Indy will not get Amy compensation for him and as you pointed out, its hard to trade him due to his neck surgeries and his guaranteed $28M. Another team will sign him as a FA but for considerably less. Manning loses out in this regard. The only way I see him getting the money he is accustomed to is through bonuses and playing incentives. I just hope he doesn’t injure himself further.

He’s a legend. Ive always really like the guy id hate to see him hurt badly. I just have this bad feeling if he’s plays again we are gonna see one of this hits where a player is laying there motionless. It would be terrible. I hope pride doesnt come into his decision and I hope he only returns if he’s truly ready.

I hadn't thought about it from those angle
Man I hope Manning doesn’t land in Washington. Unfortunately, I don’t see the Texans, Titans or Jaguars as realistic options. Texans have Schaub. Titans have Hasselbeck & Locker. Jaguars don’t have a lot committed to Gabbert but I’m not sure they drop him just yet. I would be stoked if Manning went to the Jaguars though. I wonder if the Browns would ever consider it? Their salary cap can’t be the high & they have 2 first round picks. Land those first 2 picks & they already sound like a playoff contender. I’d take Manning over Roethlisberger, Flacco, & Dalton any day of the week.
"One step at a time"
Hold on
You really think the Titans would pass on Manning because they have Hasselbeck? And Locker could learn behind Manning. And it would definitely be a huge benefit to the Jaguars to put Gabbert on the bench to learn how to be a better QB before he loses all confidence in himself.
in theory I agree
Both of those young guys could learn behind Manning but that doesn’t seem realistic to me(especially not the titans). I said Jags are possible. I just don’t see a team with potential QBs (in the titans case guys who have played and won) spending as much $ on Peyton as other teams. And you can’t make much of a case for either of those teams being better all around than any other team that would be interested. Not impossible, just not probable IMO

Ironic...
You know, I have to wonder if the reason Irsay is so quick to fire back about Peyton “not being cleared to play by the Colts” is because Irsay made a point to fire the personnel on the Colts staff that was monitoring Peyton in the first place. After all, they were among the first ones fired after the Polians got the boot.
As an aside… if I’m Luck or RG3…I’m watching this situation VERY closely. I’m not going to say I think either side in the ongoing Manning vs. Irsay is right — both have their arguments in that regard, and both have made their mistakes in handling this situation. But still, that’s something to seriously consider when it comes time for the draft, for both of them.
irony abounds in this sordid tale...
how bout homeboy insisting on making p-man highest paid player and not bothering with the physical last summer? he should’ve seen this coming a looooong way down the pipe and positioned his franchise to move forward, at all. aside from blowing a season and imploding the whole building that is… yeah, peyton walks, loses out on ending his career elway-style, the colts lose, lose and are still losing as we speak. so much loss. and the new fanbase loses b/c peyton can’t never live up to what you’d want if you get him. how bout three first-rounders for either of these guys if he’d played his hand better? they deserve this.
Honestly, I sorta feel like Irsay does have a point, in that Peyton should have discussed matters in-house, rather than going straight to the press with it. At the same time, though, I can also see Peyton’s concerns — part of the staff that was fired right in the aftermath of the Polians were the personnel monitoring his progress after the surgeries, and it’s looking like there’s going to be a complete cleaning-out of the house; the fact that Irsay upstaged Pagano’s introduction to snipe publically at Peyton is decidedly not a good thing.
In the end, I think both sides could have handled the situation better than they have — though I don’t think it’s as big a deal as the media are making it. Really, the media is the one blowing this all out of proportion, and then blaming both Peyton and Irsay for trying to upstage the Giants and the Patriots and avoiding all responsibility in the matter.
i think decision's been made
and peyton had run out proper avenues for the redress of grievances. i’m not sure irsay would ever qualify as “a reasonable man” anyway, haha
i gotchya,
The only thing I really remembered peyton saying was that the atmosphere seemed like people were walking on egg shells. Granted, not a great PR thing to say but I didn’t think that was that big of a deal and I could imagine that it was an extra awkward situation for Peyton at that point. It seemed like Irsay decided Peyton was done as soon as they locked up the #1 pick. Either way, I just hope we see Peyton again. I don’t see him retiring without a fight (not against the colts organization, just in general)

titans fans want him really badly
Would be great to see peyton head to them and spend the next five years beating the colts. You can’t not respect mannings ability as a qb, I just don’t see how there’s anyway around this situation but to let manning go, if they don’t it could be a massively expensive error for them. Shame. I hope he stays, hard to imagine manning as anything else but a colt.

Plus...
Shanahan always tries to mess with a QB’s mechanics to throw “his way”. That list of post-Elway QBs under Shanahan that haven’t measured up to being Elway (at least in Shanahan’s mind) continues to grow, and a lot of them are barely getting looked at now for anything other than sitting as backups… and that’s if they’re lucky.
To be fair
There’s only one Mike Shanahan starting QB from Denver still in the league, and he’s the starter in Chicago. I think you’re being a bit unfair in your assessment.

I don't think I am, honestly.
Shanahan, ever since Elway retired, has tried to make lightning strike a second time and mold another QB to be the second coming of Elway. It’s never worked. Just looking at the Redskins the last two seasons — McNabb was already faltering in his career, but he seriously regressed with just one season under Shanahan. Grossman has consistently been in the gutters with no change. Beck can’t get into the stadium because security doesn’t know who the heck he is — and has been just as bad, really.
I’ve read too many articles (and even seen a number of the comments on SBNation’s Redskins’ blog back during the season) all saying the same thing: Shanahan’s trying to find another Elway, and he’s trying to force every QB into that mold. It isn’t going to happen as long as he keeps trying to take already-established QBs and making them redo their mechanics entirely — if he wants to do that, then Snyder needs to be willing to get a rookie franchise QB that’s going to still be able to be molded. That’s the only way it’s going to work — and likely his only shot at having a coaching gig once the Redskins are done with him (and honestly, I’m surprised they didn’t fire him after the end of this season, but I don’t know what his contract entails with the Redskins).
I'd buy that
If Plummer and Cutler hadn’t been better under Shanahan than they were without him.
Plummer pre-Shanny: 55.9% cmp%, 6.4 YPA, 69.0 rtg
Plummer with Shanny: 59.1% cmp%, 7.3 YPA, 84.3 rtg
Cutler with Shanny: 62.5 cmp%, 7.4 YPA, 87.1 rtg
Cutler post-Shanny: 59.9 cmp%, 7.1 YPA, 82.1 rtg
Obviously the difference in Cutler is less than it was with Plummer, but there’s no denying that they were both better with Shanahan than they were without him.

Perhaps
But then there’s who Plummer and Cutler have gone on to start for post-Shanahan. Plummer, I don’t honestly recall who he went to afterwards, so I can’t really say anything. I know Cutler went to Chicago, though, and Chicago’s not exactly been a stable offensive platform to perform with — I still shake my head and wonder how Lovie Smith kept his job while sticking with Grossman as the starter*, and never mind how they gave up a first-round pick for a third-round in the Olsen trade to us. More often than not, though, Chicago’s only been in the thick of things because of their defense, and even that’s starting to falter. Hopefully their new GM will draft better than Jerry Angelo did.
- That whole Grossman debacle in Chicago a few years back, as an aside, is eerily reminiscent in some ways to Denver’s Tebowmania this past season, where Denver was winning games on the strength of their defense and in spite of their QB play. All I’ll say there is that Tebow will have to become something more than a fullback who can wobble the football to a WR — otherwise, Denver will be doomed to similar disappointment as Atlanta was when Vick (even if he wasn’t giving the Falcons his all) got pegged for being so one-dimensional.
Plummer retired.
But instead of using subjective things, I’m going to go with some statistical analysis. Both Plummer and Cutler were better with Shanahan than they have been without him.

If Manning wants to play football
He needs to do it for a reason other than money. Let the Colts tear up his contract or Peyton should tear it up and prove that He wants to play to win a super bowl on a contender (or the Colts as a good faith gesture). His contract is way too much and his health is questionable. If Peyton Manning’s motivation is to to play for a max contract, he should just retire. Besides, Peyton Manning has to have more than enough money for the rest of his life and his children’s lives.
According to what I read most of last season
Manning is the 1 that told them to make his contract structured for 1 year, so I doubt he would be unwilling to renegotiate his contract. But even if he retires, like you said he has enough money to support himself & his entire family for the rest of their lives. Plus, he would probably make a good commentator for the NFL games.
STICK THE KNIFE IN AND TURN IT!!!!!
I think that they keep him. Call it a hunch.
Cam Newton, when a reporter asks him who will win the Heisman Trophy on Saturday: "I'll tell you Sunday."
I love watching Manning play
And I will be incredibly sad if he hangs up his cleats. I’m not sure we’ll ever see another QB play that sees the field the way he does and can see the play unfold before it actually happens. 20 years from now, I’ll tell youngsters I watched Peyton Manning win the Super Bowl.
That being said, I don’t see how he can go back the Colts now. Too much animosity. I don’t see the Redskins. I don’t think he and Snyder would get along at all. The Jags I REALLY doubt since they have almost no chance of going to the playoffs anytime soon. Tennessee I could see happening, coming home and all that, but as mentioned they have Hasselbeck and Locker. Can’t see them signing Manning. Though if Manning really is ready to play, he’d be a HUGE step-up from Hassel-“my BACK-is-made-of-paper.”
I kinda like power running football though. It’s iike a bloody violent ballet…

I've read that Arizona is interested, Fitzgerald is lobbying hard for Manning.
A point that hasn’t been mentioned… The Dr(s). cleared Manning to “resume football activities” based on the recovery of the neck vertebrae. However, J. LaCanfora was saying last night that the nerve in his throwing arm has not regenerated, and there is no timetable to say when or if he will be able to throw a football at anything close to an NFL level.
So much to be done, and so few people willing to do it for me.
Irsay wants to make a name for himself
I hardly ever heard dude’s name prior to the Manning drama. Nowadays, I hear it everyday multiple times a day. Dude is sitting down with Hannah Storm going into his past and what not. I know its his team and he can do as he pleases, but enough is enough. Make a decision and move on. Irsay is starting to look like a clown.
