PRE Combine Mock with offseason and trade. Bear with me...
This is my first post to CSR, and with the players beginning to arrive at indy for the combine, i figured why not mock the Panthers draft with a little bit of offseason moves. Here it goes:
CUT LIST: Clausen, Edwards, Nannee, and Baker. Davis, see below*
RESTRUCTURE LIST: Otah, Wharton, Mare, and give Smith a restructured extension to free up some current cap space
Cut Davis, and if he wants to play this year for us, then sign him to league minimum since he's already been paid very well for a few seasons to do nothing but rehab. Plus there is no guarantee that he's not going to tear the ACL again in the first week or 2. If he does well this season and actually makes it through, then give him a little bonus and extension.
RESIGN LIST: Schwartz, Applewhite, Thomas Williams, Derek Anderson (if he'll sign cheap), Senn, and if Shockey will sign cheap, bring him back aswell. If he wants to be paid, then I think let some other team do it. Olsen can start, and Barnridge can play behind him, so Shock could be a cap casualty this season.
DRAFT: Clayborne would be the ideal pick IMO, but since he wont be there, I think we should trade down to the Bears. We seem to have decent relations with them (Chris Harris back and forth, Olsen..) and get our 3rd rounder back along with their 4th rounder. I'd like to get a 2nd and 4th, but I don't think anyone else on the board will be worth that much, so for the sake of this mock, I'll take the 3rd and 4th. Take the jump and see the mock:
1 (from Bears) : DT Fletcher Cox - 14.5 TFL/5 sacks/ 2 blocked kicks this season in SEC
2: CB Chase Minifield - Solid corner who plays the pass AND run well.
3 (our original pick from Bears): LB Bruce Irvin - Great pass rushing LB with room for improvment. Somewhat of a project as a full time starter, but Lots of upside. 21 sacks in the last 2 seasons. After the combine, probably wont be available in the 3rd round
4: WR Joe Adams if available, or Jarius Wright - WR and ST help, both with elite speed
4 (from Bears): OL Nate Potter - Versatile lineman with good measurables. Can play G or T.
5: DE Jake Bequette - Not an elite athlete, but a high motor guy. Led SEC with 10 sacks
6: P Drew Butler - Maybe a reach here, but I dont think he'll be available in the 7th. Best punter in draft, and saves cap space from Baker being cut
7: QB Darron Thomas - Played at a very high level for the Ducks, and should be able to do the same in our current offense incase Newton is out with injury. I think of him as Newton light.
Probably not the prettiest of mocks, but it provides the defense with some immediate help, gives us another return guy who can be polished into a good slot/deep threat WR, OL depth, and gives us the Mighty Duck as a viable backup to Superman.

Here's one I made earlier
Last mock before the combine
*Trade-Cincinatti gives pick 17 and 21 for pick 8.
1st round
17. Janoris Jenkins CB
21. Fletcher Cox DT
… 2nd
8. Brandon Washington G
4th
8. Keenan Robinson OLB
5th
8. Josh Chapman DT
6th
8. A.J. Jenkins WR
7th
8. Demario Davis OLB
i would love that trade
but it would never happen. we would have to give up our 2nd to get those 2 firsts. I also dont like the picks to much.
I wanna be the very best, like no one ever was
If we could swindle that trade, it'd be awesome, but
unless one of the consensus top 5 picks slip through, i doubt that Natti would give up 2 top 20 first round picks to move up 9 spots.
The only problem I have with that, is that Cincinnati has almost never traded their first round picks. Ever.
But I’m a huge fan of Janoris, Robinson, and Davis.
I don't want to draft Michael Brockers or Devon Still. Chris Kreider is the future.

Darron Thomas is a bean pole and would take to long to develop
otherwise I’m pretty okay with it. But somebody like Seattle could take Clauson of are hands for say a 3rd rounder next year and a late pick this year.
we'd be lucky to get a 5th

No team that watched 2010 football
will give anything for Jimmy. I like the enthusiasm tho. Thomas isnt Newton by any means, but he has a similar skill set, and is 6’3" with room to grow. I had us resigning DA, so Darron could take some time and bulk up a little bit and catch up with the offense. I think he would be a better backup than Clausen, and being a 7th round pick, he wouldn’t even match up to Jimmy’s mil cap hit.
Since Josh McDaniels isn't a head coach, no one is gonna trade a 3rd for pickles.

Then what about a player for player
We give Seatle Clauson they give us Brandon Browner CB. He is 6’4 had 54 tackles and 6 int for 220yds and 2 TD. He plays on the right side, Gamble on the left. Browner was also a pro bowl alt this year. We fill a need they fill a need, we all win
Blackmon's not running in the combine, I think he falls to us
Wouldn’t mind Blackmon/ Minnifield as 1st and 2nd rounders

Why isn't he running at the combine?

Not running at the combine??

Not sure, he's probably just gonna wait until his pro day

I want a superfast guy on offense
If I had my way, we’d end up with Brockers in the 1st, and the top player at either OL or DB in the 2nd, and at some point, get LaMichael James, Demps or Rainey from Florida. I think Demps and Rainey are guys who could end up being like a poor man’s Darren Sproles on offense, but great returners, so maybe the 5th round or later. I hear Demps is training for the Olympics and might not even play football, though.
I’m also intrigued by Coples. If I was Hurney, I would be trying to decide between the best DL or OL for our pick, unless Claiborne was still available, but I doubt he will be. I could also see us taking a receiver with potential in the later rounds, but I don’t think it’s necessary. So I would go with Brockers, Coples, Claiborne or maybe Reiff or DeCastro with that first pick, and I wouldn’t think too much about trading back. The combine will hopefully separate some of these guys. I can’t wait to see who we bring to Carolina for a workout, and who’s Pro Days we visit.
At this point, you cannot rule out Melvin Ingram at DE in the 1st.

Davis won't be cut
It’s a large cap hit since his bonus deferred over the next 4 years all comes due now. Darin Gantt has some tweets out there explaining the whole situation. He’ll be restructured somehow.

I'm more inclined toward some in-house moves
Ditch Mare, too. Between the cap savings from him and Baker, we might afford to get Prater as a FA. He and Butler upgrade our Special Teams immeasurably, not to mention the 6-7th round salary for Butler.
We over-paid to keep Johnson. I’m not sure how viable a second year restructure might be but we need relief where we can get it.
After cutting TD, use minimum as a base with an incentive-laden contract. If anyone can ever come back from 3 ACL’s, he might be the one. He’s worthy of another opportunity; pay him if he can deliver.
I’ve seen mocks where either Blackmon or Claiborne fell to us. If either is available, nix the trade; otherwise, I like the additional picks. This is where I commit Panther heresy: if we get Blackmon, trade Steve Smith while he still carries value and free the cap space. I wonder if Goodson holds any trade value. {We might still get that 3 and 4.}
I still like Minnifield in the second. This is one of the deepest DT drafts in recent memory, but we may find serviceable DT’s from the 7 currently on roster; I love Shirley’s size, thought Kearse was promising, and have no idea what to expect from Edwards. I get the impression Rivera is going to make that move to 3-4 in the near future so we might already have our DT and last year’s #3’s might be capable of filling in as 3-4 DE’s; it also tracks with the DE’s he’s been picking up — the size of pass-rushing LB’s.
If Adams is still available in the fourth, take a chance on raw speed, although I prefer the versatility of Chris Rainey.
With Gross’s age and Otah’s fragility, make a run at OT’s. I don’t think Williams or Ziemba is the answer, although Schwartz might be. Jeff Allen or Nate Potter might fill the bill here.
Thomas is certainly viable as a 7th but I saw one scenario with AE as our #3 QB; it would give us one last chance to see that trade wasn’t a complete waste by way of a 3 or 4 WR. If that is a reasonable possibility for an emergency QB who already knows the system, use the 7th on another OT – Jones or Adcock; their skills may translate to OG.
A few things:
It would cost money to cut Mare. There would be no cap savings from cutting him. It would actually hurt us.
Secondly, Prater had a worse FG% than Mare this past year (76% from Prater, 78.5% from Mare).
No way we trade Steve Smith. He’s Steve Smith. He’s not going anywhere. And he’s on the last year of his contract, so he wouldn’t be that valuable as trade bait anyway.
Rivera has said we are sticking in a 4-3, and until he says otherwise, that’s what I’m assuming we’ll do.
The rest is okay.
Right on. This is why he's in the restructure list.
He will be in the 2nd of a 4 year contract, so i would structure it so we can cut him after next season if necessary.
