Nation Wide Mock Draft

Hello Panthers Fans,

I had an idea for a mock draft in which your sports nation site acts as your team. Over the next few months I plan to visit each team's site and allow for each reader to help pick your team's draft pick. Please answer the poll to select your team's draft pick.

*Note - I flipped a coin and the Dolphins won the 8th overall pick over the panthers.

I would really appreciate everyones help with this. Thanks in advance! - Sam

Star-divide

Just to give you a little more on this idea and myself, I am a writer for bleacherbumsports.net and will continue to organize all of the draft information I receive through my site. The poll will be up for 3 days after which the player with the most votes is your teams draft pick. I will then move on to the next site and have them pick from which players are left. This will only be a first round draft and can not involve trades so please pick where your team currently is. I cannot verify in the proper amount of time if the other team would accept your trade.

Current Draft Results:

1. Colts - QB Andrew Luck

2. Rams - WR Justin Blackmon

3. Vikings - OT Matt Kalil

4. Browns - QB Robert Griffin III

5. Buccaneers - CB Morris Claiborne

6. Redskins - OT Riley Reiff

7. Jaguars - DE Quinton Coples

8. Dolphins - DE Melvin Ingram

The Poll will be open until Feb 5 at 1pm

Good idea

I remeber someone did this for the NBA draft. I picked Brockers, his talent is too good for me to pass up.

by TS BOBCAT on Feb 2, 2012 9:43 PM EST reply actions

he's so raw and unpredictable

he isnt an improvement right and probably wont start his first year. He’s definitely the biggest risk and he also has very little immediate rewards

I wanna be the very best, like no one ever was

by pcroadrage on Feb 2, 2012 9:51 PM EST up reply actions

The only other player I like listed is Kirkpatrick and he is a risk as well

But with Brockers he already is better than Fua and McClain In my opinion. Im one of those guys that loves raw players and to watch what happens unless there is a sure superstar to take. Look at Cam he was considered radioactive raw potential.

by TS BOBCAT on Feb 2, 2012 10:00 PM EST up reply actions

Good point about the raw potential.

Yes but..

Cam was a man amongst boys at Auburn. I’ve only seen the tape you guys have posted on brockers but there were stretches where he disappeared. Same obviously can’t be said about Cam. He seems slow off the line and plays too tall. Our 1st rounder needs to be an absolute lock. I’ve read several times that cover corners and running backs have the easiest transition to the NFL bc so much of the technique stays the same. My pick right now would be Dre K. We are a long ways away from having one of those D lines that dominate games. However w just one more Gamble like corner I think we see a lot more coverage sacks. I can remember a few times this season where hardy or big money was reaching out and needed another half second. Dre K could give us that.

by DoubleT-Dlo on Feb 3, 2012 1:38 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

I've said it before, but I'd rather pick Still.

Less risk involved. Maybe less upside than Brockers but we need an immediate starter.

We need a nose tackle.

by ERL on Feb 3, 2012 9:57 AM EST up reply actions

Still can also play multiple positions (4-3 DT, 3-4 DE)

Versatility is so helpful during a game. Say for example we run Hardy, CJ, Stills, Edwards, Beason, Anderson, and (purely hypothetical) TD onto the field with whomever our DBs are…the opposing coaching staff and QB can immediately key into what the defensive alignment will be. Are we in a 3-4 with CJ or Hardy standing up? Are we in a base 4-3? Things like that make a difference in the game, especially against opponents like the Saints and Falcons that go hurry up when they think they have a match-up advantage so that we can’t sub out personnel.

Good point. DK is a fine player, but he just seems likea Godfrey clone

(I like Godfrey) but if you can’t get an elite cover DB in the first round then why spend a high pick on someone you already have? Just my opinion and I’m sure there are numerous examples of how I’m wrong on that premise. Completely open to most of the options folks are going with…except for a WR. We don’t need a WR (unless through some fluke Blackmon is available.

I agree

I’m sure Brockers or Kirkpatrick will probably win this vote (so much has been said about them here plus the fact that they come from two major SEC schools helps their perception) but Still is more consistant and versatile (the stigma that the Big Ten has gotten lately probably hurts Still as well). I’m no expert so I tend to default to what the experts say and most put Still higher than Brockers and the CB field is deep enough for us to wait. I mean Charles Johnson, Ray Edwards, and Devon Still. Now that is 3/4’s of a GREAT line.

by prett77 on Feb 3, 2012 12:43 PM EST up reply actions

I would say Kirpatrick can give us the most wins right now, but Brockers has the potential to get us the most wins in the future

We won’t be in the race for the Super Bowl next year so we can lean towards the future, but its just too hard for me to turn down a top 10 guy at a blatent postion of need. I went Kirpatrick.

I picked DK

I’ve been thinking and I (thoughI know I’ll love whomever we draft in the 1st and 2nd because I completely trust Hurney and Rivera) would love it if we could get Kirkpatrick in the 1st and either Fletcher Cox or Dontari Poe (DT’s) or Curry (DE) in the 2nd to improve the line and secondary. Hell I’d even love it if we see someone we dub with immense potential and it’s another CB that drops to us like Jayron Hosley or Stephon Gilmore. Man I just can’t wait for our new panthers. :)

He has a lot of upside and possesses what I think the defense needs: a tall, fast, aggressive CB with good football instincts that plays the run well.

And I think when April comes there won’t be many players with much more upside than Brockers. That’s who i went with. I love his potential.

As did I

Devon Still is great against the run, and average against the pass. Brockers is also great against the run with tremendous upside against the pass. This is becoming a passing league, and if we have a guy that can stop the run, with potential to be a dominant pass rusher, I’m going to take him.

Brockers only has 2 sacks in his whole college career, I guess that does leave him no where to go but up. LOL

The guy could add twenty pounds and still be a beast. He reminds me a lot of JPP a few years ago.

With DE’s Coples and Ingram gone, OT’s Kalil and Reiff gone, and CB Claiborne gone, the 1st round pick has to be DE Whitney Mercilus.

whitney is TOO small

I just see him ending up as a situational pass rusher and we already have one of those. Why waste the pick when you can get a game changing talent like brockers, who will be an absolute monster. I just don’t see what the fuss is about over this guy and dre k.

He's about 265 right now, he could easily gain 10 lbs of muscle in an NFL weight training program.

About the same size as CJ.

by Son of a Newton on Feb 3, 2012 3:53 PM EST up reply actions

Actually, I'm not.

The discussion was referring to player weight. The 256lb (actually should be 260lbs) weight you reference is what Brown weighed after he put on 10+ lbs before the 2010 season. In the context of the conversation, the reference is quite valid.

Brown Was Listed At 6-4 & 250 Before The Start Of, But Measured 6-1 1/2 & 256 At The Combine

He thought he would be a high enough draft pick that he did play in any of the All-Star games, but I believe his expected measurements before the Combine had changed to 6-3, 260.

by PanthersRoar on Feb 5, 2012 10:31 PM EST up reply actions

I'm Sorry, But Your Flat Out Wrong, Please Check This Link

www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/prospectrankings/TSA/2009_DE

This is nfldraftscout.com’s rankings of the 2009 drafts DE’s, showing their measurements. They don’t list fractions of an inch, so they rounded Brown’s 6-1 1/2 height as 6-2. His 6-1 1/2, 256 pounds measurement comes from my personal notes, from the Combine. You should watch it this year, and take notes, if you haven’t before.

by PanthersRoar on Feb 6, 2012 1:38 PM EST up reply actions

Not to come late to the party.

But if he was 256 at the Combine, he would have been 265+ in his 2nd season, where it was estimated that he gained at least 10 good pounds.

Either way, I don’t think it’s a case of him being undersized from a weight perspective. His frame is just not big enough. The reason his draft stock was relatively high was because of his 16 sacks during his final season at FSU.

We need a nose tackle.

by ERL on Feb 6, 2012 1:42 PM EST up reply actions

Ok, I've upset you.

The fact of the matter is, the situation is the same. It was said that Brown needed to “put on 10 or so lbs” and he would be fine in the NFL. He did and he wasn’t. That is really all I have to say about that. Regardless of exactly where his weight was, it is well documented that he did put on 10 or so pounds but I still don’t believe he’s ever weighed more than 260.

Whitney Is Listed At The Exact Same 6-4 & 265 As DE Robert Quinn & Aldon Smith Last Year

Quinn started out slow, but finished strong.

Smith played OLB in the 49ers 3-4 defense last season, and had 14 sacks.

The lack of a quality pass rush (ranked tied for 25th) is the Panthers greatest need.

Drafting Brockers and his college career 2 sacks, then in the hope he suddenly develops a pass rush that he’s never shown before is just wishful thinking.

by usana_gaines on Feb 2, 2012 10:56 PM EST up reply actions

There are about 4 players on the list I definitely would not take

That means that there will be a lot of talent available when we pick. I voted for Kirkpatrick, but that might change after the combine. I actually feel like I should be picking a linemen, especially since it’s harder to get good DL in FA. If we end up picking DeCastro, Brockers, Still, Burfict or another OL, I’d be okay with it. I think Coples will still be available, but i don’t want him. I also firmly believe RG3 goes 2nd. I think the Rams could give up the 2nd pick, end up with two top 10 or 15 picks, and get Floyd and Coples, plus an additional 3rd rounder or something like that. I think the Redskins would be flat out dumb not to trade up and get RG3.

by usana_gaines on Feb 2, 2012 10:55 PM EST reply actions

if the rams dont get kalil they should be declared criminally insane

Bradford got battered last year, if they want him to actually turn into a good qb they’ve got to protect him better. Kalil will walk into the 18:24:26 position and stay their for the next decade. He’s a massive talent, giving up this pick or drafting blackmon is gonna lead to bradford getting carted off at some point in the year.

A lot will be surprised come draft day....

The pick will probably be an OL… There is no way Marty is going to draft Dre Kirkpatrick.

He doesn’t fit the BPA rule at # 8 or # 9.

Jonathan Martin or OT Riley Reiff will get the pick if they are available.

I do like Jonathan Martin. I watched a lot of Stanford game because of Andrew luck. Jonathan is a talent….and good fit for Pass or Run plays…..

From CBS:
Tackling: Flashes pure strength to stop receivers and running backs in their tracks on the outside, should get stronger over time. Likes to throw his shoulder into receivers to force them out of bounds. Resorts to duck-and-swipe when unnecessary, which may work against college ballcarriers but will cause problems at the next level. Used on corner blitzes due to size/speed combination, forces a lot of quick throws. Willing to go for the strip, especially if ballcarrier already engaged. Negates special teams gunners on punts, stays with them with effort, physicality and speed.

I will post the film where I have seen the tackling problem when I get back to my CPU. Also, I watched Dre in the bowl game. Even if he has some great tackles with good technique that have escaped me… he still has the stupid off field incident that got Thomas canned instantly last season. I am not a fan, sorry.

Yeah, I hear you. And I’m no different, outside of the games I recorded on my DVR (and stored on my external hard-drive).

As far as DBs go nowadays, not too many of them are better at tackling than DK, imo. All of them are shaky. Hell, even LBs are getting worse and worse at tackling.

And I think most of it is because they fear being fined, on the college level, maybe they fear hurting their team with 15 yard roughing penalties. Either way, I don’t like it. It’s hurting the game. It will never be safe to play football. If you wanna play, wanna earn your living doing it, then you’ll have to deal with the consequences. Can’t have your cake and eat it too. I picked DeCastro

First off I wanted Melvin Ingram. With that said, I just dont see them streching for a DB after Claiborne is gone. Plus we still don’t know what Hogan is going to bring to the table. Decastro is #1 at his position and we need a starter. I Whorton is starting ot get up there in age. Both Marty and BAMF said they want to keep the strengths of the team strong. A Lot of people are going to say Jonathan Martin and I can understand that, but DeCastro was better than Martin in BOTH pass and run blocking.

At the end of the season the Rams #3 QB was hobbling off the field if I’m not mistaken. You’d think they’ed be all over some Kahlil action.

very surprised about Rams choosing Blackmon over Kalil

further surprise at Coples to Jags… I’ve heard some of them absolutely hate that pick and you’d think the Jags would learn not to take a chance on those super-risky DEs

Speaking of trades

Have members from the Brows or Rams expressed a desire to trade their pick? It seems with a lot of mocks, these teams are trading down.

I think the Rams should keep their pick

They really need to get Bradford some elite help on offense (Kalil or Blackmon). I could see the Brown trading their pick though, depending if they like RG3 enough to take him that early. They need a lot of help in multiple areas and could use the extra draft picks. Especially, since they are going to miss out of Luck, Kalil, and Blackmon.

by keebler elf on Feb 3, 2012 9:51 AM EST up reply actions

Yes, teams have wanted to trade there pick. its just to hard to accept trades in this type of mock draft

for example, say you wanted to trade down to the jets at 16. I can’t just switch the picks because its gives to much power to the one team proposing the trade. Then it would also be a process of what is the consensus of the site on what to offer and take in that trade. After which, a consensus of the Jets site would see if they wanted to accept that trade, say they make a counter offer. I would then have to come back here and have your site vote again. The process would just become to drawn out.

I have found so far that most teams have had people that have wanted to trade there pick, but in this scenario the redskins were the ones that expressed wanting to trade the most. As for the Browns, many of them seemed content that RG3 fell to them.

by JetMet on Feb 3, 2012 11:23 AM EST up reply actions

I completely understand your reasoning for not doing trades

I was just curious because most fan bases have an idea on what their team will do on draft day and try applying it to mock drafts. So its interesting to see who they would want without the luxury of trading down. You will have to let us know how the rest of your mock pans out.

I will for sure... I'll probably come back with like a fan shot or something when its all done to let you all know

Also thanks for understanding the trade thing. You would be surprised how many people were getting upset that they couldn’t trade their pick / still choosing to trade their pick (even though thats not an option)

Gotta go with Kirkpatrick

They need a shutdown corner on the other side of Gamble. I love Captain’s heart, but unfortunately, he’s too small to be a star corner in this league of tall receivers nowadays.
I still have faith in the two rookie DT’s. They were serviceable and I believe with a full season under their belt they will perform well next year.

It's nothing to do with Captain's height.

It’s everything to do with his lack of athleticism. He has stiff hips, he isn’t explosive coming out of cuts and he has no hops.

If he was allowed to press the WR he’d be a potential starting CB in the league. As that’s been outlawed he’s a nickle and nothing more.

Captain is great athlete

I still think he is our best punt returner. He is explosive out of his cuts and has great hops (37.5 inch vertical). But you are right in the fact that he has stiff hips….and he has trouble turning and locating the ball

by mlrupert on Feb 3, 2012 10:19 AM EST up reply actions

I agree with you on Captain.

I’m hoping that we are going to ditch the zone principles we’ve been running under Meeks and go with more press, man coverage moving forward. That would play to Captain’s strengths, as well as Kendric Burney’s. I’m also hoping that Hogan makes a big leap this year.

His one year of production worries a lot of people (myself included).

Can he produce similar stats in the NFL? Was he a one-hit wonder? Those are serious questions, and I don’t know if we have the ability to draft someone 8/9 overall when there are questions about the player.

It’s the same thing with Brockers and Coples. There are just too many questions there to take the risk, IMO.

As much as I want Alshon...

We won’t need him I don’t think, I honestly believe Gettis will come back on all cylinders, worry about wide receiver later in the draft for some insurance though (cough cough Joe Adams cough)

DreK won’t happen honestly, Captain got burned a few times, but he also made some good plays, plus they supposedly like Hogan alot which would allow Cap to slide back to Nickel again. Meanwhile while Cap got beat a few times, the D-Line got burnt EVERY play. Go with Devon Still, safest pick imo.

I don't want to start a war here,

but how is everyone convinced that Gettis is the answer? Personally I thought he was very stiff, and the majority of his big plays were broken plays or Pickles throwing laser passes (that is sarcastic).

I think it's our offense, at least that is my opinion

Our offense was 5th in the NFL and the scheme is predicated around going to the #1 WR, then to the TE’s, RBs and then the #2 WR is almost an after thought. Our defense has a lot of needs. Don’t get me wrong is by some fluke Blackmon is available…hell yeah pick him twice.

I'm of the belief that we need to re-fortify our offensive line.

Like yesterday. I love a healthy Jeff Otah, but I don’t trust his ability to stay healthy at playing weight. Bell played very well, but we need more depth. Not to mention the fact that Gross isn’t going to be around forever. We can ill afford to continue to wait.

I’m going with Jonathan Martin here, but I fully understand why many are picking Kirkpatrick. I just believe that we’ve got some capable talent at CB that just needs a change of scheme and a little more pass rush in front of them. I believe that both of these things are going to happen this season.

I for one, think Kalil is a much better pick for the Rams at #2 than Blackmon. Bradford doesn’t have time to throw the ball and is in jeopardy of getting David Carr syndrome. I think taking Kalil is a perfect choice for the Rams.

Two-time All-American, consistent winner and leader.

In the top ten? No way mano.

He’s solid, but if you’re going to pick a Safety in the top ten, he’s gotta be out of this world, a la Eric Berry.

i would take him if he slid to us in the 2nd (unlikely but very possible)

but not in the first. I really like Markelle Martin who is considered by most to go late 2nd to early 3rd.

I wanna be the very best, like no one ever was

Agreed. Another Safety I like is Harrison Smith from Notre Dame.

Good coverage skills, and nice range, coupled with solid tackling abilities.

Safeties are big difference-makers

I like the idea of drafting leaders of winning teams. We could use another leader on the defense. I like that Barron was the leader of the best defense, was consistently a strong performer, and can tackle and intercept the ball.

We have our Ray Lewis in Beason. Why don’t we try to find our Ed Reed? I’m not saying Barron is the only way to do that, but I’d like to see him get a little more consideration.

I don’t think the 8th-9th pick is worth spending on a CB. Look at the Cardinals and PP from last year. While PP went to the pro bowl, he didn’t make a big difference on the outcome of the season.

For me, it's not about who is 'worth' this pick or that pick.

It’s about where that player would be drafted if you took yourself out of the equation. If the odds say Barron would still be there at 20, then picking him at 8 or 9 is irresponsible. If he’s the top player on your board at 8, fine…but you still don’t pick him. Even if all you can get is a 3rd or 4th rounder, you trade back (even if it’s a less than ideal trade) just to get something extra.

If no one bites, and he’s the top player on your board, then you consider picking him, but you’ve got to try like hell to maximize the value of the 8th or 9th pick.

We need a nose tackle.

If we can trade back to 16 or 17

Then I’m more than ok with taking Barron there, even if it is just a little bit of a reach at that point. But at 8/9? That’s ridiculous.

Yes, ideally we trade back, and Barron could make a great impact. But, it is an interesting aspect of the draft...

… What do you do when the player you really want doesn’t correlate with the “consensus value” of the player? Barron looks to be a low-risk, high-ceiling player at what may be the most critical missing piece of our defense.

But that is debatable. Is Safety a bigger need than DE, or OL? Then, you have to think about the talent level of the next best player at each position. At this point I am at a loss to figure out which way we should go. I’m hoping that free agency and the combine will clear my head a bit.

So much to be done, and so few people willing to do it for me.
