I may not always be right, but even a blind nut finds a squirrel every once in a while.
of course,
but I like that he’s looking at Brockers and is interested in improving the DT position even though we drafted two last year.
by John Chilton on Feb 16, 2012 8:13 PM EST up reply actions
well some didnt think we would go qb last year after taking two and a half last year
you could really use the half for any one of those guys maybe we drafted as few as 1 and a1/2 as far as that goes.

I wouldn't be surprised if we picked Brockers to be honest. The way our two DT rookies performed, despite being rookies, would give any head coach pause on whether he needs to improve at that position.
Greg Hardy and Johnson can hold down the fort at defensive end. But what we need is a couple strong defensive tackles to stop the running game. Ron Edwards will be one when he comes back from tearing his ACL. ((Hopefully in shape so as not to do it again.)) Brockers could be that guy that can be the other anchor. Add in an improving Greg Hardy with a full training camp with OTA’s under his belt and the Panthers D-Line has the capablility to get nasty and nasty quick.
The biggest question mark is if they and our linebackers can stay healthy.
ACC Championship Member Brandon Thompson is the new Jacoby Ford. You better pick him Panthers or you will be doomed to relive the 2010 season over and over again in the Twilight Zone.

agreed on Fua and McClain
If we can get one starter and a solid backup out of the pair I’ll be happy. But we still need a force on the inside and I don’t think that guy is on the roster.

Honestly, and I'm no Clemson homer,
I think Brandon Thompson can be that guy in the second.

I really don't see how he's ranked as the sixth-best DT.
I think he and Still are very similar, but Thompson is more consistent. He doesn’t have the pass-rushing ability of Worthy or Cox, but he’s stronger against the run. He’s not Dontari Poe, but Thompson isn’t a NT, he’s a UT that can stuff the run. He’s the ideal size and while he doesn’t do anything flashy, he does everything you could ask for well.

I do!
Have we all forgot how WV shredded Clemson’s D on all levels. Clemson had a very poor D most of the season. Their offense kept them in all the games they won. Do not understand the love for Clemson D lineman. Who was the last one to pan out in the NFL. Breston Buckner is the only one that comes to mind and that was a decade ago.
One player does not a defense make.
Clemson’s defense as a whole sucking doesn’t mean that Thompson isn’t a quality DT prospect. That’s the same logic as saying that the Panthers defense sucks so Charles Johnson isn’t good.

Just show me.
Examples of any Clemson D lineman that have panned out over the last 5 to 10 seasons. Better yet show me any Clemson defenders that have truly panned out over that same time span. Clemson’s defensive recruiting has been way over hyped the past decade and that is what has led to many draft bust. It is just typical overhyped players that happens in alot of cases with different schools. Clemson’s flaw has just been on their defensive players.
I'm not interested in what his teammates have done.
I’m interested in what he’s done.

If Thompson pans out that's great for him.
He works hard and does everything right to become a solid player then all of the rewards and blessings to him. I just have not seen that come out of Clemson defenders in a while. If I am wrong then I will eat some crow. Not a problem at all with that.
Clemson defensive players are tough to grade.
They don’t teach toughness over there. In practice they won’t let players tackle. Let em make tackles so that they can make mistakes and learn from them. That’s the reason they suck so hard in the NFL in recent years. They ain’t ready for it. They ain’t tough. And the players that do succeed have to try twice as hard to catch up with everyone else. And if you’re a lower draft pick that teams don’t have much invested in you, it’s easier to just let you go after a year or three.
I believe Gains Adams would have eventually creeped into elite DE status if it hadn’t been for his unfortionate heart being too big. :( God rest his soul. That was an unfortionate, gaping hole in the heart of all Clemson fans.

Good info James.
I have read so far what everyone has posted on here about Brockers and saw the different mocks that have us taking him. The more I ponder and think about what the future could be with us taking him with our first rounder I have finally come to a change of heart on this and I say without a doubt IMO we should pull the trigger on this kid without any hesitation and here’s why. Brockers is a little raw from what he has shown to many of us that have seen him play but so wasn’t that the same question we had a year ago about Cam. I am trying to see the future through Hurney’s eyes on this one. Brockers stands 6 ft 6 inches tall at 305 as of now. Can you imagine him with the proper muscle and weight training after a year or so of NFL conditioning. You could be looking at a 6 ft 6 inch 320 to 325 lbs monster with him keeping his speed and quickness. He could become the most dominating D lineman in the league. He would make someone like Suh look like a child on the field. I am just stating if he is there when we pick take him. He has the same upside just like Cam did that Rivera and Hurney saw. I think with players like Coples and Still you want get much more out of them cause they already are near their peek. With Brockers there is so much more room to grow which could pay out way more divedends for us.
There's value in a safe pick, though.
And Brockers is most assuredly not a “safe” pick. Just because we gambled and hit on one high-upside guy doesn’t mean we should roll the dice on another. I like Brockers, but his rawness is an absolute downside.

His rawness concerns me as well, and the potential is very intriguing...
if Hurney and Rivera signed off on him I’d trust their judgement. I’m just glad their taking a good look at him.

Oh no doubt.
I’m fine with whoever Hurney picks. He’s earned our full support for whoever he picks in the first.

Think about the future.
If he develops like I stated he could be the first DT to command a possible triple team on the defensive line. Think of the possibilitys of how that would free up players to reak havoc all over the field for us.
Think about him busting
He’s not a safe pick, he’s a developmental pick. It’s absolutely critical to hit on a top-10 pick. If Hurney picks him then so be it, but I’m not exactly enthused with the prospects of picking Brockers right now.

We already gambled on Newton who was a success
But you’re not going to get heads every time.
by Atlantapanther on Feb 16, 2012 8:44 PM EST up reply actions
Exactly my point.
We’re not in a spot to take risks on draft picks. Our defense is in shambles and it’s critical that we hit on these picks, especially our first-rounder if we want to turn it around.

I understand your thinking... but
It seems risky now I get that. Have a little faith when I say he will be the most dominating D lineman to come out of this draft class. I am looking past the obvious players that people say are more certain and seeing what can transpire 1 to 2 years from now maybe even faster depending on what kind of person Brockers is not the player. Work ethic, motor, etc.
Ok
I'll trust some completely random guy on the internet's evaluation of draft prospects.

I'm not a draft guru, scout or any of those things.
If I were I would be getting free meals and pay for my time. I’m just saying for example for both meetings this year between Bama and LSU set aside what the teams done and look at the individual battles on the field. For the most part of both games played Brockers on the defensive front kept Richardson the #1 back in the draft held in check at the line of scrimmage running the ball. He was tackling and holding him at the point of contact on most of the rushing plays. If we go Dline Brockers is the clear choice above the rest hands down. Now if we go in a different direction with CB or WR so be it. I just believe Brockers can help any team on the defensive front on whomever decides to take him. That team will look like a real genius in the long run.
I mean, I'd be happy with the pick (as long as he didn't like...bomb the combine or show up way out of shape)...
but at the same time, this is just due diligence on the staff’s part; I’m sure we’ll be seeing DreK’s name popping up, and probably a couple of the O-lineman as well…

Brockers is too raw to come in and make an impact next year.
And he doesn’t have the explosion that other top ten DT’s have exhibited at the college level in the past. Do not want.

I disagree on the explosiveness
He dominated the Bama O-Line in the national championship game. Anyone who can do that is A-OK in my book.

I was all for the possabillity of drafting him until I read this:
Alan martin @PantherBeast_OS
@AlbertEliasMGMT Why would the panthers want to pick this guy up. He is old as dirt. I can’t the panthers going after him.
Hopefully Hurney read this insightful retweet before he makes his decision on this OLD GUY

I find it significant that Brockers is the first announced visit...
There is less tape on him than the others…expect to see Devon Still come in as well. From there it will be interesting to see who they bring in for private workouts
I like it
I think Brockers is exactly what the doctor ordered. I do think he will contribute in a rotation next year, and be the unquestioned 3 down starter by his 2nd year. His upside is massive, and he is so young there is no doubt he can continue to grow into a monster.
