2012 SB Nation Mock Draft
Greetings Cat Scratch Reader, P_Roach17 here from Bleeding Green Nation attempting to organize a SB Nation-wide mock draft. After a disappointing season for my Birds, and being less than thrilled with having to watch the Giants win the SB, i'm left with a football void at my core. So, as a result, I'm turning to the rest of SB Nation to satisfy not only my football needs, but the needs of others who are on the outside looking in during this 2011 postseason. You will of course be representing the Carolina Panthers, who currently hold the 9th overall pick in the 2012 draft, as I'm sure you all know. Your cooperation in this poll is greatly appreciated. Note: I would like for this poll to reflect the fans choice, not necessarily who you think your team will draft. Now for a few quick rules.
Make your selection after the jump...
Rules:
1) There will be no trading picks. Trading picks would be both complicated, and time consuming, so everyone will just stay put at their set draft position.
2) Submit your votes for the player of your choice as soon as possible. After 2 days the results of the poll will be final, Cat Scratch Reader will submit its pick at 1am on 2/18/12, and Buffalo Rumblings will be on the clock.
3) If you feel as though I have left a player out that deserves consideration as your teams draft selection, then let me know in the comments section, and I will gladly add them.
4) Any draft talk (or argument) that is to be made pertaining to your Panther's pick, feel free to make in the comments section.
5) ******** Be sure to rec this post so that it will remain under the recommended fan post section for everyone to see, and so that they are able to cast their vote *********
Previous picks:
1) Indianapolis Colts - Andrew Luck
2) St. Louis Rams - Matt Kalil
3) Minnesota Vikings - Morris Claiborne
4) Cleveland Browns - Robert Griffin III
5) Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Trent Richardson
6) Washington Redskins - Justin Blackmon
7) Jacksonville Jaguars - Quinton Coples
8) Miami Dolphins - Melvin Ingram
Hopefully this can be a fun experience for all of SB Nation, as well as provide insight into the upcoming NFL draft. Be sure to vote and keep the ball rolling so that the rest of SB Nation can participate. Thanks for your time, and good luck in the upcoming season. Cat Scratch Reader is now on the clock!

well you could vote for him in the poll
he’s losing to Brockers right now, which is completely ridiculous because Brockers is not a top 20 talent, let alone top 10

Watch Dre's highlights video
And imagine him hitting Smitty high like this or DeAngelo or Megatron…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CB7P81EicE0&feature=fvst
You don’t rap up in the NFL and your only bumping them down the field. Also, realize this is his highlights.
In his defense
The highlights in this video appear to be aimed more at big hits than showing someone playing the CB position.
But this is his tackling style
I like his interceptions, but really don’t want another weak tackler in our secondary.
In my opinion, a CBs primary job is to stop a receiver from catching the ball.
Gamble can’t tackle well either, neither could Deion.
I will grant that I haven’t seen a ton of film on Kirkpatrick, I don’t know if he can cover well, but if he can cover well, I’m not particularly concerned about his tackling ability, that’s more of a concern if he were a safety.
I mean, it would be a bonus if he can tackle well, but if he’s going to provide blanket coverage on receivers, I can live him him not being a sure tackler.
What about luke kuechly
he is best inside but if TD aint recovered he could slide over to weakside

I would take Kirkpatrick here.
I think he is better than Brockers and would solidify that #2 CB spot. Lethal combo with Gamble and him.

I voted for Jonathan Martin. Good value at #9, and gives Otah the chance to move to RG to take wear and tear off his knees.

I like this idead

I voted Reiff.
Same idea, I just think he projects better as a LT one day.

Never thought of that, great idea
Look at Lucks numbers and he could do the same for Cam
Who would you have voted for if you didn't accidentally vote Brockers?

Honestly, I'm undecided
I haven’t actually watched most of these guys play or seen enough on them to make a truly educated decision..
I would have probably abstained from voting.
A bit OT...

Not to be rude, but wouldn't it be smart to include the position and school they are coming from?
To those owho don’t follow college football primarily, I could see them not picking Devon Still or Nick Perry as readers don’t know who they are since they are not primarily discussed on this board. Thanks for the chance to vote on this.

Not rude at all
Very reasonable request. I’m just kind of lazy haha, and to tell the truth didn’t think of it. I’ll be sure to change that
I’m liking the idea of trading down more and more – especially if we can land someone like Jenkins while getting a low second or high third round pick.
A lot of us do, but for the sake of this drill we can't trade the pick.

Honestly I'm happy that I didn't include trades
Every team outside of he colts has largely wanted to trade up or down. When you think about it, its just really unrealistic.
I will say this
If we do not pick a punter in the later rounds, I’m going to be very upset.

Brockers
Absolutely enamored with his upside.

This draft is a little fan heavy...
I think the Vikings and Jags would be better served to go the unsexy way of Reiff and/or Martin on the O-line instead. Especially Jax, they gotta do something to help Gabbert if they really want him to be a starter.

If Blackmon falls to 6th
I think we have to try and move up to get him.

Huh. In the mock James is doing Brockers was still there at 20.

Gotta go with Reiff
Best player available, and he meets a need. Some analysts believe he has a higher ceiling than kalil.
Besides, a dominant and deep offensive line builds dynasties. And can you imagine Cam Newton with ample time???? #scary_thought

Groundhog day
I thought we did this exact same post/poll a few weeks ago or was that another SB Nation fan of whatever team that was trying to do the same thing? i am confused.
Anyone with a SB nation account can join here and post.
So yes, it was someone else doing the same thing.

I've only seen one other guy do it before, and that was last year
I’m surprised you guys have seen more than just mine already this offseason
It was really only one other guy (Another Jets Fan IIRC..)
I don't want to draft Michael Brockers or Devon Still. Kreider is the future.

Ingram would have been my choice
Could bulk up and be a DT, could be the passrushing DE everyone seems to clamor for, could fill in at LB Even. But I say OL if these are the choices.. I have decided that instead of a penetrating DT we need a bug heavy to free our bltizers and DE’s

Gotta go with Kirkpatrick.
He provides an instant upgrade in the secondary, has multiple years of starting in the SEC, and has the upside to become a lockdown corner. (But for some reason I went with Jenkins…)

I can;t believe Brockers is winning this
he’s not even the best DT in the draft, he is extremely raw and wont start his rookie year, a huge gamble, not out biggest need, and he’s not even a top 15 player

I voted Kilpatrick.
I’ve honestly never heard of Brockers. That probably reflects more on my lack of knowledge than anything else though.
If you disagree with my opinion, I will take it personally.
I honestly can't believe you guys chose Brockers
I must say that I’m disappointed .
I wanna be the very best, like no one ever was
Before Brockers I would go:
Still
Hightower
Reiff
Martin
DeCastro
Kirkpatrick
"Puttin' DB's to sleep since '86-'87."
Hightower or Upshaw
I can see Upshaw filling a hole, Hightower not so much. And if you do mean Hightower, then why him over Kuechly?

I would take Hightower over Brockers and over Kuechly.
We need to get bigger on defense. We have speed. What we don’t have is a big SLB who will win a one-on-one matchup with a guard or tackle in the running game. Anderson, Williams, Phillips, etc, are playing out of place when they do play the Sam, and with TD’s situation, it may be best to pencil in Anderson at WLB.
Hightower, without looking it up, is probably 6’3" and 260 pounds. He also has some versatility. We saw him put his hand in the dirt and get a big sack/fumble in the NC game. I’m thinking about a better version of Rolando McClain, but with the ability to stay on the field on 3rd down as a PRS.
I think Kuechly is a poor man’s version of Jon Beason. I’m not saying he’s not a good player, but we already have someone who plays his position at a pro bowl level.
Upshaw is a better natural pass rusher than Hightower, but he would play DE in our base, not OLB. So again, he would be taking snaps at a position where we already have an adequate starter. Hightower can simply take quality snaps at more positions.
