2011 Panther Player Season Recap - CB Darius Butler
A former second round pick of the New England Patriots, Cornerback Darius Butler landed in Charlotte on waivers prior to the Panthers 2011 season and added much-needed depth in the team's thin secondary while filling an emergency role as a backup kick returner. The third year defensive back from the University of Connecticut may have failed to tally an interception or forced fumble, but he played an important role as the team's starting nickelback
2011 Season Stats: 33 total tackles (28 solo) and seven (7) defended passes in 13 games (6 starts) in which he appeared. Two of these tackles came on Special Teams.
Though he started with the Panthers as a back-up, Butler would eventually see time as a starter in the base defense. He spelled starting CB Chris Gamble for a game after he went down with a concussion the week before an October matchup with the Chicago Bears. He also started opposite Gamble after CB Captain Munnerlyn was placed on injured reserve late in the season. Butler was inactive for a pair of games earlier, and missed another due to injury. His absence against the Minnesota Vikings on October 30, the week prior to the team's bye, was due to a family emergency involving the health of his infant daughter (she's okay now).
Perhaps the highlight of Butler's season came early on when the division-rival New Orleans Saints paid their annual visit to Charlotte (more after the jump...)
Season HighlightsIn the Week 5 matchup that saw the Panthers drop a heart-breaker to the eventual Division Champs (who boasted arguably the most prolific offense in league history with Quarterback Drew Brees eclipsing Dan Marino's record for passing yardage in a season and Running Back/Punt Returner Darren Sproles setting the all-time mark for All-Purpose Yardage) Butler got the starting nod as the Nickel position, which the Panthers opened in for the first of three occasions throughout the season. He turned in a respectable performance, notching five solo tackles and defending a pair of Brees passes.
Butler would also open the game on the field at Atlanta on October 9 and again against Washington at home on the 23rd of that month, when the team opened in its Nickel Defense. His relief of Munnerlyn came at home against the Tampa Bay Bucaneers on Christmas Eve, as well as in the season finale in the New Orleans Superdome in the second meeting between the Panthers and Saints.
It was during Butler's absence against the Houston Texans that the Panther's 4th Round pick from the year before, CB Brandon Hogan, was first able to crack the team's active roster and see playing time, making quite a splash. In particular, Hogan raised eyebrows when he victimized Texans Wide Receiver Ken Walter by forcing him out-of-bounds, negating what may have been a touchdown catch from rookie QB T.J. Yates. It remains to be seen what, if any, role both Butler and Hogan will play for the team during the 2012 season, though Hogan would appear to have a leg-up going into OTA's because of the draft capital the team spent on him.
2012 Outlook
Should the Panthers go out and acquire a pair of starting cornerbacks via free agency and the draft, as many of the Panthers' faithful are encouraging the team to do, Butler could end up being a victim of the final roster cut for a second year in a row. The Patriots parted ways with the 25-year-old at the final moment the season before. When the Panthers gleaned Butler from the wire the following week, they assumed his four-year rookie contract, which rewarded him with an annual base salary just above $1 million and extends through the 2012 season. Next year, he is set to earn about $1.3 million. Prior to 2013 season, Butler will become an Undesignated Free Agent, free to sign with any team.
Thus far in his career, Butler has been unable to duplicate the success of his rookie campaign with the 2009 Patriots, when he totaled three interceptions, including a 91-yard pick six from the arm of Houston Texans QB Matt Schaub. Despite his struggles to make his mark in the NFL, Butler has all the appearances of a high-character guy who remains active in the Coral Gables, Fla. community where he attended high school and has used his good fortune in football to work with needy families through the Darius Butler Foundation he founded. He is also accessible to fans through his Twitter page: dariusbutler27.

I was very satisfied with Butler this past season.
He wasn’t a stud, not even really starting material, but he played well as the nickel and did pretty much what was asked of him. I’d keep him around for next year and have him, Hogan, and Munnerlyn battle it out for the nickle spot while Gamble and a draft pick occupy the starter’s spots.

couldn't agree more.
that was the slant i took on it. we needed him this year, badly. hopefully next year we don’t. appreciate the work, young man.
super agree
The Patriots saw something in this guy, and he showed some promise last season as well. He’s certainly worth keeping around and could end up helping the secondary quite a bit next season.

I suspect Hoody Bill regrets the decision to let him go...
Their secondary was decimated to the point Edelman had to play nickel.

CB Darius Butler Is The Panthers Fastest, Most Athletic, & 2nd Tallest CB
CB Darius Butler – 5-10 3/8, 183, 4.32-40 Pro Day, 1.46-10 Yard Split, 43 inch vertical, 11-2 Broad Jump, 7.06 3 Cone Drill, and a 4.13 20 Yard Shuttle, at his Combine.
I feel Butler can be as good as the pass rush allowes him to be.
I read in Rick Bates post (the info came from Carolina Huddle) a couple of moths ago that Butler’s 2012 salary was $770,000 (not guaranteed), I guess the rest must be a prorated signing bonus.

got his contract info from the espn profile.
don’t know bout that. i didn’t come across that info. if the editorial staff knows diff i invite them to correct me. interesting, though. at half of what i thought, i’d say bring him back for sure. stanford gotta go, in my mind
I just double-checked ...
by looking at Rotoworld’s contract info.
7/10/2009: Signed a four-year, $4.125 million contract. The deal included an initial roster bonus of $440,000 and a first-year guaranteed option bonus of $1.6275 million. 2012: $770,000, 2013: Free AgentReads to me like we’re only on the hook for the 770 grand for 2012. Remaining guaranteed money would’ve hit the Pats when they cut him.

I'd love to see if the Panthers could bring in some fresh meat at corner this year.
ACC Championship Member Brandon Thompson is the new Jacoby Ford. You better pick him Panthers or you will be doomed to relive the 2010 season over and over again in the Twilight Zone.
Clemson 2011 ACC Champions! Look forward to doing it again next year! :D
I really think we only need one
And that’s a guy to start opposite Gamble. A Gamble/draft pick/Hogan/Butler/Munnerlyn CB corps is a pretty damn good one, IMO.

It's decent I agree.
Ain’t nothing wrong with a little competition from foreigners though.

i can agree with that.
i just feel one of the marty hurney double-ups coming in the draft. i swear i do. i hope the safety we bring in will do more bring pressure in the box and be a hitter and let godfrey cover the field and bring down those who slip through. that would be perfect to me.

Im not really sure the answer for no. 2 cb spot is on this roster
and Im not really sure that we can wait another year to find out but we did make a super bowl with Howard and Cousins there so we will see I think.

We didn't see much of Hogan
But there is definitely a chance he could be our #2. I still think its a good idea to bring another guy in (especially if that player is a steal at their price/draft) but I would take Butler as the regular nickel and have Captain focus on ST’s in a heartbeat

Only Rivera really knows what we have in Hogan
And i trust him to judge our moves accordingly. If he likes him than we are set, if not than we might pursue a CB.
I wanna be the very best, like no one ever was
if he does.
he was a first round talent before the knee. you never really know til it happens on the field in the nfl, though. i trust the hc, as well, and that’s refreshing b/c i never felt i had an adequate explanation from foxy unless he was being a jerk. rivera’s got a coolness about him that exudes confidence.
At this juncture, we have to keep Butler, IMO.
I don't want to draft Michael Brockers or Devon Still. Kreider is the future.

I like him as a nickel
I wouldnt mind giving him an extension (not a lot of money obviously). It is annoying how we have so many nickels though. Munnerlyn, Butler, and Hogan are all very good nickel CBs but we still need a legit starter. At least we have good depth though
I wanna be the very best, like no one ever was
thanx:)
i thought it encapsulated the struggle of an over-matched at times guy who laid it on the line for us.
My favorite part of this is he got cut from the worst passing defense in the league.
For once, New England made a move that we’re able to look at in hindsight and say it was bad.
If you disagree with my opinion, I will take it personally.
so in a round about way...
You’re saying the panthers cost the pats the superbowl? Ha…. I can live with that
