Latest Kiper Mock Again Has Brockers to Carolina

As I saw James Dator's live mock draft going on over at National Football Post I couldn't help but notice the number of DTs that flew off the board right in a row late in the first: Still (20), Ta'amu (24), Brockers (25), Poe (26), Cox(27). That would seem to support a Panther trade back to still net a DT instead of going with one at #8 like Mel Kiper is mocking:

Carolina Panthers Record: 6-10
* Michael Brockers, DT, LSU

The Carolina defense in 2011 wasn't helped by injuries, but the result was a unit that couldn't stop the run, but also had a tough time generating consistent pressure on opposing quarterbacks. It starts up front, where the Panthers simply need to add talent. Brockers is a high-ceiling defensive tackle, a player who will thrive in any scheme, but could be particularly effective as a penetrator in the 4-3. The Panthers had to make do rotating a pair of rookies on the defensive interior last season, and really need to add talent and depth. The offense is going to be there -- they have to find some stoppers.

The statistics tell us that one of those first 5 (or more) is going to be a bust. So do you trust Kiper in this regard? ;) One thing you can say about Mel is he sticks to his guns which I guess in this business you have too or you look like an amateur. I mean, Jimmy Clausen could still develop into a good NFL back-up right?

Per my sig, I do not want Brockers.

Too much risk for an unproven commodity.

Aren't every prospect unproven commodity

when entering the NFL to make a name for themselves. Cam Newton was too much risk as well.

To an extent, yes every prospect is an unproven commodity.

But Brockers is extremely raw, and only has one season of starting at the major college level, alongside the 2nd best defense in the NCAA.

Jason Pierre Paul was also raw who had 1

season of starting experience along had 5.5 sacks. Not comparing the 2 because they play different position. Since this staff is full if teachers and they can help reach brockers potential, then take him. If not, move on.

i agree totally about brockers!

everything that i have seen of him doesn’t transfer well to the nfl. the fact that he is 6’5’ means he is going to have a hard time getting low and creating a low center of gravity to help with his burst off the snap. i saw in alot of his highlight’s on youtube he tends to stand first off the snap.not getting a good push. what about whitney mercilus or jared crick if fully healthy? both have high motor’s and are very good tacklers as well.

It's funny how Kevin and Pat Williams,

John Henderson, Albert Hayesworth( when in shape/ motivated by money lol) and the nose tackle from the ravens are all 6’4-6’6 to end up having solid to hall of fame careers. They didn’t have trouble throughout their careers with creating a low center of gravity to help with his burst off the line. His technique needs serious work. Using YouTube videos which majority of the time show the good highlights and barely their flaws can make any look good. Mercilus is a 1 year wonder, doesn’t have elite burst off the snap. Hated Crick is Jj Watt, a great 3-4 Dend.

by adam carter on Feb 15, 2012 9:08 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

yes for every john henderson there is a corey irvin as well.

but from what i saw he was having problems getting low and was not getting good push on single blockers. and from the you tube video’s that i saw, if they were suppose to help his draft stock i would say maybe he should ask them to take them off. because i wasn’t impressed. and i don’t think we have the time to wait for his skills or technique to be polished. we tried that with mr. irvin there. but i see what you mean about mercilus and i agree, was going on pure speculation until i saw hi s draft preview video and couldn’t agree more. as far as crick it looked to me they moved him all over the line in both front’s. i like his high motor and would be a great 2nd round pick.

Was Cory Irvin like 6'2 or 6'3? Good height

that was suppose to have low center of gravity etc. Irvin was a fox and meeks pick who likes undersize Dt who penetrates to the qb. How do you or anyone know rather they have the time to wait or not? Majority of prospects needs years to polish in the NFL, some you will NFL ready though. This team hasn’t had a winning season since 2008, cam n isn’t a finish product as he has room to continue growing.

by adam carter on Feb 15, 2012 10:45 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

your write about prospects needing years to polish like charles johnson

but your 1rst round picks are suppose to be day 1 starters in today’s times. and cam isn’t a finished product but he was a day 1 starter. too much talent not to. i’m not arguing with you i just don’t brockers is 1rst round talent. to me i don’t think he is much better than mclain. i think devon still is a better dt prospect at this point and time.

by gdogg3269 on Feb 15, 2012 11:05 PM EST up reply actions

Brockers isn't 1st round talents because he every raw( as you stated)

along not being ready to start now. But has 1st round talent base on potential once develop properly, height, etc. Just like Coples even though he didn’t live up to expectations everyone gave him this past year. I’m not a fan of brockers or I’m advocating him being the team 1st round selection. Just hate how fans uses comparison to other players etc. Watching YouTube highlights to evaluate talent etc. Devon Still is the better prospect now, but in the near future when brockers reaches his true potential who will be better then? Still has been injury mostly throughout his college career BTW.

If we draft Coples

we will always measure him to Peppers, and he will always come up short.

by TooEasy on Feb 15, 2012 4:18 PM EST up reply actions

I agree that if we draft Coples people will always compare him to Peppers,

But IMO, Peppers and Coples are completely different players.

Agreed, if we are going to preassign lofty expectations on an unproven rookie in my opinion

he’s much more like Richard Seymour.

Your right Peppers was MUCH better prospect and still highly disappointing. Colpes scares me more than Brockers or Still. ANY player who’s motor is in question id prefer to stay far far far away from

SEC D-lineman historically don't perform very well at the next level, but I love his motor and his

strength. I’d love to have him but not at 8 or 9…he’s maybe only a hair better than a couple guys we already have on the roster. I love the way he hustles though.

I haven't really seen him play, so I have no idea about his ability.

His stats are nice though.

well to chime in on jaxon's question about mel is no i don't trust his pick as of right now.

i have seen were mel has changed his pick from month to month leading up to the draft, but then a couple of day’s before the draft he gets some inside knowledge of who they want and he changes before most people notice. prime example was in 08, 2 months before the draft he had the panthers taking derrick harvey, then 1 month before the draft he changes it to rashard mendenhall, due too the fact that he was suppose to be a power runner ( i still laugh at that one!) then the day before the draft for some mysterious reason mel changed it to jonathan stewart, which is who we picked. so i do know he can be a little wishy washy at times. and as far as pickles goes i still think mel get’s a woody for him every time his name is mentioned and no! he will never be no more than a 3rd string qb. thanks jaxon for the story it was very interesting.

Am I missing something ??

I haven’t seen any videos of Brockers yet that impressed me. I have however seen video of him getting owned by a single blocker again and again. With all that being said I haven’t seen him in person so maybe I’m just missing something … I am much more impressed with what I’ve seen from Still. He seems to get off double teams quickly and appears to have a nose for the ball. Just my 2 cents worth :)
