Panthers Are $9.6M Over the Salary Cap

Hat tip to Panthers FTW for being the first to post this on CSR via fanshot

John Clayton has been crunching the numbers and says the Panthers have some work to do just to get under the projected team salary cap:

Four teams still have to get under the salary cap by March 13. They are the Pittsburgh Steelers, who have redone three contracts to be $11.7 million over, the Oakland Raiders($11 million over), the Carolina Panthers ($9.6 million over) and the New York Giants ($7.3 million over).

Please note he does say the final numbers will not be released for another week but they are imminent. $9.6M over! Wow...now look at how much two of our division rivals have available:

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, thanks to $23.519 million of carryover cap money, have the second-most cap space with $60.496 million...The 2011 playoff teams in good shape are the Denver Broncos ($50.735 million of cap room), San Francisco 49ers ($39.33 million), Atlanta Falcons($30.6 million) and New England Patriots ($20 million).

Plenty of money out there for Peyton Manning obviously for the Redksins, Broncos or Seahawks. Sorry to be a bummer but we should not expect any big signings this offseason and instead look towards the draft and lower level special teamers. I expect a number of cuts and a couple surprises when the new league year starts, So how might be out the door?

We know Dan Conner is certainly gone. Clausen right behind him. Shockey too but there is still a chance he stays though slight. More likely though is some re-structured or new deals for guys like Travelle Wharton, Thomas Davis, Jonathan Stewart and Jeff Otah. Even that might not get us to a $9.6M reduction. GM Marty Hurney has to work his magic.

i believe that smitty will get restructured as well

between his and wharton’s high cap numbers getting those two to restructure will get us close if not under the cap. i think steve is a 7mill. and wharton’s is at 8mill. for this year

smitty is worth the 7 mill, not sure if he'll restructure

Wharton on the other hand will have to restructure. If he doesn’t he could be cut. Too much cap being eaten up by him.

We could pay Smitty $8mil in a signing bonus over 4 years, plus a backloaded salary. He gets his one-year money,

and we significantly reduce his cap hit. Remember, in 2014, the cap is going to jump due to the new TV deals. We just have to get through 2 tight seasons. Wharton, on the other hand, still has two years on his contract at nearly $6mil per season.

$8 mil in the pocket today provides the incentive for a backloaded contract. It would for me.

I think Smitty will restructure

He is a free agent next year and has made $36Million of his $43.8million contract. Something along the lines of 4 years $30million with $10million in signing bonus (if I’m not mistaken that doesn’t hit the cap) then spread the money out nicely should be enough to have Smitty retire a Panther and help bring his cap number down for the next two years.

We saw this coming after the offseason (I hope)

Now we get to trim the fat, tighten the belts and build the team through youth.

Thomas Davis counts for almost 12 million in 2012

1.4M signing bonus, 8.25M roster bonus, 2.25M salary.

He will not see the 8.25M roster bonus for sure.
If they cut Davis before the deadline, it puts them under the cap. It’s almost a certainty that they cut him and then possibly resign him.

I don’t see a way that Clausen and Goodson stay on the team, that saves another 1 million.

Likewise, I can’t see Baker staying on the roster for 1.5M

Wharton will probably be restructured or cut, as he costs 5.7M
Hangarter is due 2.8M and then he’s a FA, so he could be extended as well.

Smith is due 7.75M and has stated that he wants to play for 3 -4 more years, so an extension is possible for him as well.

There are a few other players on the margins, such as Armanti Edwards for 490k.

In reality, after Thomas is cut, Carolina is right at the cap number. The only question is how much money are they going to free up for signing FA and their draftees.

Don't forget Mare

If he comes back it will be a tragedy. I want to say he has 3 0r 4 million per year. I don’t know what the number is but its too much for Captain Clutch-less.

by Spanglerb on Feb 14, 2012 4:33 PM EST up reply actions

I can't remember the exact numbers

But it will cost us more to cut him and sign another kicker than it will to keep him.

It will cost us 3M in cap space to cut him.

It will cost us 3.2M to keep him.
It would cost a minimum of 390k to hire a replacement.

If we replace Mare, it won’t be for cap reasons.

I did make a mistake due to conflicting information on Davis.
Apparently, Davis signing bonus was all paid up front according to Yasinkas, and not spread out over his contract, which is where the 1.4M came from.
So Davis actually accounts for 10.5M instead of 11.9M towards the cap.

Granted, that doesn’t affect the meat of the matter, which is cutting Davis will put the Panthers under the cap(I’m still hopeful that he comes back with a new contract though).

While I agree that cutting (and possibly resigning) TD will get us to the cap,

That still leaves us with virtually no cap space to sign our own draft picks, let alone any solid FA’s.

Cam Newton, when a reporter asks him who will win the Heisman Trophy on Saturday: "I'll tell you Sunday."

by Son of a Newton on Feb 14, 2012 5:08 PM EST reply actions

We'll get a couple million from cutting players we don't want any more

We will need to have a few players get extensions/restructures in order to be able to make any big moves in FA.

I think Wharton, Smith, and Hangarter are the most likely candidates.
It will still be fairly tight unless we cut a big name for cap purposes.

by Philipkcks on Feb 14, 2012 5:13 PM EST up reply actions

I’m just not sure that we would be able to sign anyone at the level Carlos Rogers or Reggie Wayne.

Thats what I was insinuating, and to be honest, I have no idea.

In an ideal cap situation, I could see the team signing at least one starting caliber defensive player, and possibly a couple of solid depth players that could come off the bench and make an impact.

I don't want to draft Michael Brockers or Devon Still.

by Son of a Newton on Feb 14, 2012 7:11 PM EST up reply actions

Likely possibilities:

Extend+Restructure, 4 years:
Smith
Gamble

Cut or restructure:
Wharton
Davis

Casualties:
Clausen
Connor
Shockey

Other possibilities:
Mare
Naanee
Alphabet Soup
Ron Edwards
Hangartner

by ppalm on Feb 14, 2012 5:15 PM EST reply actions

Judging from Riveras pressers

Ron Edwards is certainly in his plans to be returning.

Connor, Shockey, and Naanee aren’t signed right now, so we’d have to free up space to resign them.

what atlanta will do with that space is enigmatic.

i wouldn’t be surprised if either them or the bucs tried to vulture us on anybody we have a legitimate shot at – especially shockey. he already said he’s willing to come back at a discount, though (think it was joe person who broke it, but can’t remember). in my mind, if we go o-tackle in the first otah is probably gone, and it will be kris jenkins all over again. he’ll get healthy and beast somewhere else. td will most likely come back on a pay-for-play basis… clausen, armanti and butler are good candidates to go, there’s about $3 mil. i think travelle wharton is just about the most interesting quandary. i’d dump him and go with schwarz, hangartner, bell and williams on the inside, myself. he was playing tackle when he got that contract. smitty would prob be open to deferring his payday in favor of the team. i honestly have no idea about gamble, so… we’ll know pretty soon, anyway, how this shakes out. i’m still convinced there’s a plan in place and we’ll make AT LEAST one mid-level move on a defender.

by bylinebrown on Feb 14, 2012 6:02 PM EST reply actions

Davis alone will get us under the cap

save up to 10 mil there. 1.5 for cutting Baker, over 1 mil for cutting Hartsock. Clausen around 1 mil, Hangartner could save us around 2 mil by cutting. Restructure Wharton to save a mil or 2. several other backup players making just under a mil will likely be cut. I could see us going in 10 mil under, thats not including rookie signings or resigning our own FAs.

- Saves $7.75 million

Jimmy Clausen: Cut
- Saves $993,000

Steve Smith: Scheduled to make $7.75 million. Estimated re-structure at $4.5 million, backloaded high guaranteed money deal

That should do it (I’m guessing). If not he’s gonna have to get really creative. I just hope we free up enough space to bring back Shockey.

Not only do we have to get at cap level but. . . .

We have to go under it far enough to allow money to sign draft picks any free agent on this team already we want to keep and have money for during the season in case we have to sign a player for need at a position due to injuries or what not. The hard truth of the matter is Wharton, Clausen, Goodson, Davis, Shockey, Conner, Baker, Mare, Thomas Williams, Legadu, and some other fill in players will not be back or have contracts restructured. This is the nature of the business. The only players that will work out new deals this offseason are Smitty and I believe Ron Edwards will rework his also since he did not do anything for us last season. Marty might lower his contract and rework it with incentive clauses. I know some of the players I have listed are fan favorites and Davis was also one of mine. But for the Panthers to move forward towards the future we have to move ahead with new guys for a brighter future then tie up any money on hoping for the best with some of these guys.

I'm not sure our situation for next year's budget is so dire...

The only way it makes sense for us to be so cap strapped after having something like… what was it? $50 million? $70 million? is if we front-loaded a lot of contracts to resign people. D.Will had a huge signing bonus, so did many of the others.

If that only applies to the cap this year, we could be doing just fine for next year’s cap.

by aceofsween on Feb 14, 2012 10:40 PM EST reply actions

No to worried.

James posted above 3 moves that will get us easyily under the cap, and Hurney knows how to rub his fingers together and squeak out some cap space. I do see Shocky as being the only resigning as it is, and them relying on the draft this year. One year or another they are going to have to back off a bit to try on open up some breathing room but I do not think were at that point yet. Also this is all specualted on the estiamated cap space, so it could be more room or less depending on the reality of it.

I am a proud supporter of troll hunting.
