Could Randy Moss be a worthy gamble for Carolina Panthers?

Cris Carter's thoughts on Moss:

Spoken like a champion
That’s the exact thing I get frrom that guy, and wouldn’t touch him with a 10 foot pole. That personality would do more harm than good, and be like oil & water with both Smitty and Cam.
that is just funny
Reminds me of Ron White “You know my grandpa always ‘that boys got a lot of quit in’em’”

He should be pissed. He should have been inducted years ago.
But, he’s right about Moss.

Ok to all those that say do not want.. Ok then, who would be your ideal pick if we sign a WR? When Vjax is brought up I hear “do not want” when Desean Jackson is brought up “do not want” when TO was brought up “do not want” (understandable about TO but still) Hines Ward, “do not want” Randy Moss “do not want” A lot of people here seem to hate every WR in the league not name Steve Smith or Brandon Lafell. I dont get it. If we can get Ward or Moss cheap Id take them in a heartbeat. What is it with you guys and hatred for nearly every WR in the league. Havent you guys seen moneyball? Its ok to sign old players that once where superstars if they still have a year or two left.
Its simple, their production is not worth the cost and baggage they bring
We’re butt up against the cap, and signing any major name is going to force us to cut costs elsewhere. Did you see what happened when Moss bounced around two years ago? He didnt’ do a damn thing. The other WRs, excluding Ward, all have pretty big issues making them not a sure-fire upgrade to our team. We have good, young, cheap WRs who have developmental room and potential, and signing a big name squanders that potential.
Three things...
1. Welcome back.
2. An ideal pick for a WR would be one who does his job, isn’t a douchebag diva, isn’t older than dirt, and doesn’t cost a fortune. (None of the ones available in FA brought up previously qualify.)
3. Moneyball is about baseball, not football.

I don't have anything personal against any of the receivers you mentioned.
But I don’t want any of them either. Jackson is going to be more money than we can afford and that’s all there is to it. I “do not want” him because he is one off the field screw up from a full season suspension. The other guys are all diva wide receivers and arguably washed up. I “do not want” them to infect our young, impressionable team with their bull crap. Not to mention the fact that every rep they take in practice is a lost rep for our young guys. One guy that you didn’t mention that I “DO WANT” would be Dwayne Bowe. I wouldn’t over pay him or anything, but he’s extremely talented, has a good attitude, and is young enough that he could contribute for several more years. If we were going to bring in a WR, this is the type of guy we should be looking for.
That’s all I have to say about that.—Forrest Gump.

I would take Moss, some of the other guys, no
Both Jacksons would cost too much money, Ward is done, T.O. is both done and a cancer. I dont think Moss is as much of a locker room issue as people think he is. and if he isnt as good as he use to be he will still demand attention and help take pressure off of Steve while making a few plays
I wanna be the very best, like no one ever was
Amen. And I agree with the Bowe proposition.

I have to agree with this.
TO is a more complete player at this point. All Moss can do is run the 9 route, and after a horrible year (3 teams and couldn’t get on the field with the Titans with their best WR on IR) followed by a year on the couch I’d have to be convinced that he can still do that…

well TO is
Older, coming off of a serious injury, slower, and a much bigger locker room cancer

At least he doesn't quit on the field like Moss.

To me, it seems TO has gotten past his locker room caner ways
I don’t recall him causing any problems in Buffalo or Cincinnati. That said, I still wouldn’t want him.
i hate TO, moss i respect.
say what you want. randy would be a nice addition for a season or two. he really would. you sure couldn’t bracket coverage steve smith with the all-time deep threat on the other side, uh-uh. i think randy came out of retirement to reunite with tom brady, though. really, i think he saw branch and welker dropping passes in the super bowl and KNEW they would have won if he was on the field. if belichek don’t take him, he’s likely to check out like peppers or something. i don’t know, though. cam is infectious. my grandfather gets excited about him. he doesn’t like football (a baseball and boxing man).
I dont think there is any arguing that he would be an added threat
My question is how much do we have to give up? Does this mean we are giving up on gettis/pilaris? How much pay will he be expecting? Would it be better to just take alshon jeffrey? And my main objection is: hed be a 1 yr stop gap. yes he upgrades the position but for a year… Use that cap space on someone whose going to stick around. We arent 1 wr away from a superb owl so let him go.
too expensive, most likely
but, no. i don’t think adding another piece is giving up on our current receivers. it’s just diversifying cam’s portfolio.
’
Is he really an upgrade?

At least
Bring him in for a workout. That would ensure that the other guys not named Steve Smith understand they need to come into camp hungry unlike last year.
I think that it's worth a shot to bring him in for a work out.
Apparently, he took last year off to sort out some personal stuff, and if he’s mentally solid, as well as physically sound, I would bring him in, especially if he still has that 4.3 speed.
I don't want to draft Michael Brockers or Devon Still.

Maybe it's unfair, but thinking about this only reminds me of the Meshawn disaster...
it made sense on paper, but overlooking how much of a douchebag he was led to a lot of issues; I remember reading somewhere today (I think it was an article actually supporting the Moss idea) about how some players were ready to throw parties when they found out Johnson wasn’t being resigned, and I can’t shake the feeling it would just happen all over again with Moss. Last thing we need on this team is that kind of drama…
Nobody fucks with the Jesus! -Big Lebowski
Id say hell no.
He’s the WR version of Julius Peppers. At times he could play like an all-pro and other times he just quits on plays. Does anyone re-call when we played the Patriots a while back and he was criticized by our corners saying he gave up on plays? IIRC it was Gamble and Marshall.
by JBeason52 on Feb 14, 2012 9:16 PM EST via mobile reply actions
Gamble held him to one catch for a handfull of yards in that game
and to top it off Hitman forced a fumble on that one catch
I wanna be the very best, like no one ever was
This is just not true.
He’s the WR version of Julius Peppers.
We may feel like Peppers didn’t always give his all, but he isn’t in the same realm of douchebaggery that Moss is in.

What happens when a WR blazes by a CB and makes an amazing catch
it’s not called getting T.O’d, Rice’d, Carter’d, or Fitzgerald’d. It’s called getting Moss’d. and there’s a reason for that.
I wanna be the very best, like no one ever was
I've never heard it called "getting moss'd"
I usually hear it being referred to as “getting burnt.”
And Randy Moss is 35 years old, 3 years removed from doing anything significant in the NFL, and has still shown his tendency to be a bad teammate. Plus we have good young talent at WR, a Pro Bowler in Steve Smith, and a relatively deep draft at WR if we wanted to go that route. This is a do not want of the highest degree.
Must not be too standard, I've never heard of it either.

Are you guys serious?
getting Moss’d or Massing someone is a very common term in football. it usually refers to when a WR makes a great play or embarrasses a DB. I’m suprised you guys dont know it, even my mom knows it. it’s used in media and it is very commonly used among football players, especially WRs and DBs.
I wanna be the very best, like no one ever was
Yeah, I'm serious. I've never heard that term.
And I’m up on current verbiage. I know what gucci means (It’s a shoe brand, right?), I know what fly means (Isn’t that a movie that had Jeff Goldblum in it?), and I know what homie means (It’s where I live.); so yeah, I know what’s up (or down, whichever is correct these days).

BW is fresh to def.
After work, we’re gonna go cruising for chicks at the local K&W. After that we’re gonna roll out with our homies and go hoop some buckets. Then we’ll just kick it up in the cut and play some Sega Genesis.
Now all I gotta do is convince BW to not wear double-denim.

As long as we’re rolling in my 5.0 with the rag top down so my hair can blow, I’m down. We should hit A1A Beachfront Avenue and see if the girlies are on standby waiting for us to say hi while we’re at it.
And I won’t wear double-denim, but I am wearing my flannel shirt and Doc Martens.

I'd take Randy Moss
Look at Albert Haynesworth last year on Tampa as an example. If he doesn’t do what you want, you just cut the guy. If you bring in Moss, and he can still run a 4.25 or 4.30 40, I say you give him a shot. He can get minimum wage, and if he sucks, he gets cut. He can have incentives built in for playing time and production, and if he doesn’t produce, or runs his mouth, he gets cut. If he pisses off Smitty, he gets punched in the eye Ken Lucas style.
LOL @ "he gets punched in the eye Ken Lucas style" or...
he simply gets “cut”, but not from the roster.
