Is QB Jimmy Clausen's Panthers Career Almost Over?
Rotoworld.com just reported that Panthers #3 QB Jimmy Clausen has a $923,000 roster bonus due on March 27th.
www.rotoworld.com/sports/nfl/footballr=1
I hadn't heard anything about this roster bonus before, only that Clausen's 2012 salary was reported to be $861,000, and only a $371,000 cap hit to cut him, a salary cap savings of $490,000 (these numbers were first posted on CSR by Rick Bates, and he found them at Carolina Huddle). So if this roster bonus is in addition to his salary, and not included in the previous numbers as it seems, then cutting Jimmy Clausen before March 27th would save the Panthers $1,513,000 in cap room.
I've have been writing that the Panthers should try to trade Clausen for a late round draft pick, but the news of this roster bonus may make him untradeable. Why should a team trade for Clausen, if all they have to do is wait a month and a half until he's cut, and can either claim him, or wait for him to clear waivers, and just sign him as a free agent.
Recent talk, and CSR post have the Panthers wanting to find a backup QB who is sort of a Cam Newton clone, like free agent QB's Dennis Dixon (he was at Oregon with J-Stew), or Josh Johnson. Some have also suggested drafting a QB like Oregon's Darron Thomas or ECU's Dominique Davis (who may be available as a UDFA).
What do you think?

Jimmy, you need a new home... hope it works out for you. Seriously!
You weren’t ready for what was thrown at you, or for what you were throwing at, last year. Life sucks sometimes, but you know the saying about “One door closes…” Make the best of it.

Best of luck to you, Jimmy.
You’re too expensive relative to your play and fit for this offense, so I wish you the best wherever you go.

I have always like Jimmy
I dont believe he is a headcase I just beleive he is not a leader and he relies on his own talents and that doesnt work in the NFL. You have to be a leader and put in the effort. I think someone will definatley pick him up just based on his following coming out of the draft.
long live pickles!
sorry we wasted a pic on you, should have taken jimmy graham instead
we could have had Graham with our 2nd 3rd round pick, the one we used on Edwards.
I wanna be the very best, like no one ever was
yeah we got the wrong jimmy
but that was during the fox era who only uses tight ends as blockers. could you imagine if they meant to get graham and when they sent the phone call in for the pick they got it wrong and chose clausen instead. i can here the crickets in the war room now. how funny would that had of been! i can here hurney now who in the hell picked clausen it was suppose to be graham!
you mean the one we gave away basically a first round pick for?
yeah, that pick ended up being the first pick of the second round for ne, who promptly snatched up ras-i dowling, who i feel was last year’s dre k (big, physical corner who jams you up and wraps you up). i believe he got hurt this year, but imagine belichek will end up getting more out of him than we will from armanti.

Nice...

Feel bad for the guy, because he really was placed in a no win situation a year ago… he doesn’t seem to have the ability to be a starting QB, but, perhaps in the right system, he can catch on. Hope he does, but for 1 mil, sorry bud, but you have got to hit the road.

I thought he was the savior... after Jake.
I was an advocate for his success which was never manifested in Carolina. I do earnestly appreciate him for what he was for this organization… a stop gap quarterback, and a horrible one at that. I may sound as if I’m being cynical; however I mean those negative words with nothing best overall intentions.
Jimmy could have done fairly ok in Carolina… enough to keep his job (by maybe winning a couple extra games), but the organization would have went in a different direction draft day to build around him. That kind of building could have taken years only to realize that he is not the answer. Another team would have selected Cam Newton and we would be watching him light the NFL on fire.
So with much respect "Thank you Jimmy, from me and my family". Thank you for the interceptions, for "ALL" the check downs, the fumbles, the stumbles, and the infamous batted balls. It was definitely hard to watch at the time… seemingly wicked or cursed really, keep in mind that it was because of your consistent contributions on the field… that the Carolina Panthers are the team that they are today.
There’s no need for tears… chin’s held high over here. Your name will go down… in Carolina History.
Happy trails my friend=)

If he wasnt a horrible stop gap...
We would never have been able to select Cam. So for that Jimmy we thank you.

I honestly wonder how he would have done last season
Think about Clausen with a year under his belt, no lame duck coaching staff, a genuine offensive coordinator, and a good QB coach. I have to feel that he would have looked like a completely different player. After all, Moore didn’t really do much better despite being experienced, and look at what he turned in down in Miami.
But Clausen, even if he reached is full potential, is still nowhere near as good as Cam is going to be. And he’s never going to play the same game, so there’s no point in him being a back up here. I expect Hurney to either cut him loose or try and get a late round pick for him, and I also expect him to start at least one more NFL game in his career.
Personally, i wish him the best. After all, if Clausen hadn’t had such a difficult rookie season, Newton might be a Bronco or a Bill right now.
That's kinda my feeling...
Our offense under Dr. Donut-muncher was inept at best. But this team has moved right past him. The only way he stays if he gets his contract reworked and I’m pretty sure we all know that isn’t happening.
That may be
But he wasn’t exactly setting the world on fire in the preseason. Yes, the lockout may have limited his progression but he was owned by a rookie and leap frogged by a veteran for the backup role. Personally, I feel he lacks the discipline to be a pro QB. His lack of leadership says it all. Maybe he catches on somewhere else, but in Carolina his days are numbered.

I may not always be right, but even a blind nut finds a squirrel every once in a while.
His career was over the moment we drafted Cam.
Like Ivan and some others have said (and I’ve agreed with it before, as well), Jimmeh was thrown to the wolves before he was ready — and he wasn’t as NFL-ready as people wanted us to believe. And Cyberjag also has a point above: one has to wonder whether we’d have seen a completely different player or not under the circumstances of having a competent OC, no lame duck coach, and a good QB coach… though I would suspect not, unless Fox was already shown the door before our disastrous 2010 campaign. One would also hope, in such a situation, that Clausen didn’t do what he did do in the end, and quit listening to the coaches like James reported on last year.
So yes, his career is effectively over… in Carolina. I do feel sorry for the kid, though, and I would hope there’s an NFL team who’s willing to take him in and give him a better chance than he had here. Maybe if Seattle is interested enough (like it’s been rumored off and on), perhaps we could work out a trade with them and get something out of the deal.
I'm a fan of Jimmy's, and I hope he turns out to be a good QB somewhere else.
