NFL Draft: Alshon Jeffery's Combine Training

Catching up with Alshon Jeffery’s Agent and Trainer 2 weeks prior to the NFL Combine.

While draft pundits sit at their desks with coffee in their hands and soon-to-levied criticism in their fingertips, former University of South Carolina WR standout Alshon Jeffery is working his ass off. I had a chance today to speak in depth with key members of his representation team, as well as his world-renowned trainer to get a glimpse into how Jeffery is preparing for his future life in the NFL.

Jeffery was an unstoppable force as a sophomore at South Carolina, and came into his Junior season being heralded as one of the nation’s 3 top prospects at the WR position along with Oklahoma State’s Justin Blackmon and Oklahoma’s Ryan Broyles. Broyles has fallen out of this elite group due to ACL injury while Blackmon, by most every account, has earned his spot in the cat bird’s seat as the consensus #1 WR prospect of 2012.

Alshon Jeffery declared for the NFL draft after what most viewed as a disappointing junior campaign. Although he only scored one less touchdown in 2011, he finished his junior season with a little over half the yards (762) that he was able to accumulate his electric sophomore season (1517). In my opinion, this is an easily defended drop-off, and certainly not of the enigmatic Jeff Fuller-variety. Jeffery’s quarterback, Stephen Garcia was kicked off the team due to off-the-field issues while USC’s only other true standout force on offense was RB Marcus Lattimore who was lost for the season in October due to injury. In watching back the film, it is obvious that teams were basing their defensive game plan around neutralizing the Gamecocks’ only remaining weapon in Jeffery. He was fighting consistent press and multiple coverage looks for the entirety of his junior season with lackluster QB play and no real "click" to the offense. If you watch back, your eyeballs should tell you this. Your eyeballs should also tell you that this is the great Alfonzo Dennard that Jeffery makes look like a middle-schooler at the 1:00 mark:

Star-divide

Alshon Jeffery vs Nebraska Capital One Bowl 2012 (via JPDraftJedi)

That was a little over a month ago. So it’s not exactly ancient history. Dennard was playing him so hard and so physical in the Capital One Bowl that the two both ended up getting ejected for fighting by the 3rd quarter, but only after Jeffery had already racked up 148 yards and a TD (nearly 2) on 4 catches.

NFL Draft wizards everywhere who still wear a T-shirt in the swimming pool started talking about how he has trouble containing his weight. They questioned his motivation and began moving him down draft boards labeling him the next Dwayne Jarrett or Big Mike Williams. A big body with hands that cannot separate, cannot get into routes quick enough, and who will end up getting too fat.

His trainer sees things differently. Jeffery is now stationed at the Athlete’s Compound in Tampa where many of super-agent Eugene Parker’s clients go to prepare for NFL Draft season. His training is being overseen by their Director of Performance who has worked with athletes ranging from Ndamukong Suh to Derek Jeter who he personally trains in the MLB off season. Jeffrey is currently facing a regimen of 9-hour days that looks like this:

Day 1: Track Work
Day 2: Position-Specific (Routes, 3-cones, speed cuts, etc)
Day 3: Early Lift, Mild lactic acid breakdown, Rest/Regeneration
Day 4: Track Work
Day 5: Position Specific
Day 6: Early Lift, Mild lactic acid breakdown, Rest/Regeneration
Day 7: film / relax / extra massage, recovery, etc.

Jeffrey’s most often criticized attributes of his game are as follows:

"He has weight issues"

"He’s a diamond in the rough" Jeffery’s trainer said. "He’s taken to all of it so well. Our program is about learning how to be a pro, making that transition. Understanding the value of rest, regeneration and nutrition in the same way you value the actual ‘working out’. The first thing we looked at with Alshon was making sure we didn’t lose any bit of his muscle mass. Not that he was out of shape when he got here, but (with all these guys) our job is to make sure their bodies are in the best position to get the biggest return (on the various tests.) That means maximizing angle and force production as well as explosiveness while pounding fundamentals. (Alshon’s) got a bright future ahead of him. As far as his exact weight- ahh- it doesn’t even really matter. If there are issues about that, I will tell you- he is at his playing weight. He’s ready to show people that he will be really good in this league. I really mean that"

"He is slow."

Jeffery has run the 40-yard dash in the mid 4.4’s and is projected to run between a 4.45 and a 4.65 at the NFL scouting combine. When I asked his trainer where he was in testing for the .40, he just told me that if you look at those numbers, he will be in perfect position and form to be on "the better side of that."

"He doesn’t come off the line of scrimmage fast enough and makes sloppy cuts."

"If I’m going to compare him to anyone, as far as that stuff- breaks, line explosion, change of direction- He’s got it. Guys like Michael Crabtree, Dez Bryant, James Hardy- obviously he’s a bigger guy but he’s fast and moves as well as any of those guys with that stuff."

"He cannot separate from defenders downfield and he has shown a knack for running lazy routes."

"What the average person doesn’t realize is the caliber of athlete (Alshon) is. If some people call it running lazy routes, it isn’t that. What is so special about Alshon is that he makes everything LOOK effortless at the college level. When we evaluate these guys, you have to take what you kow about them, what you know about body mechanics and decide for yourself: Is this guy not trying or is he so good that he makes it all look easy. Alshon is so good, so fluid and instinctual that sometimes it looks like he may not be trying. When you know the person, know the kid- you know that is not the case. He’s shined in everything we’ve thrown at him. Speed. Flexibility. Neuro. His body fat is where it needs to be and he has adapted to our lifestyle management program that he will be carrying with him, just like everyone else that makes this transition successfully. He’s smart and he gets it."

So we’ve heard from his trainer and we’ve heard from his agent.

Maybe Dre Kirkpatrick could join Alfonzo Dennard in telling all of us how lazy Alshon Jeffery is?

If anything, watch the last video (during the only year he has had consistent QB play)

He has a ceiling of perennial All Pro, and would give Cam a go to bonafide big #1 WR for the next decade.

Basically a guy to take the keys from Stevie as he gets older. (Could also increase SS’s stats, as he will be left in single coverage)

So what?

We were 7th in offense last season, and 7th in passing yards per game with 5th in points per game. Football Outsiders ranks us 4th in overall offense…

But we were damn near last in defense. 28th in total yards, 27th in points, and rated dead last by Football Outsiders in their defensive metrics.

But you seriously want us to draft a WR? I call USC homer-ism.

I'm with MikeTrain on this one.

Not discounting the defensive woes, but Jeffery might be BPA at 8/9.

No, they actually weren't the worst

I’m really debating telling you to go fact check on your own before you argue with me… But I’ll be nice and do it for you…

First of all, the Packers had the worst in “team defense” giving up 411.6 yards per game. The Patriots were 2nd worst with 411.1 per game. Secondly, the Patriots only gave up a ton of yards, not a ton of points. They were 15th in points per game despite giving up more yards than 30 other teams in the league. Third, they still weren’t the worst according to Football Outsiders, we were. According to FO, they weren’t even 2nd worst, Tampa was.

My point? The Patriots lost the Super Bowl. I’d rather draft someone based on who will help us win it, not on what school they went to.

by aceofsween on Feb 12, 2012 4:34 PM EST up reply actions

Oh my... they were #2 not #1 in yards.. Big whup of a difference

Shows how defense is not as important as you think when 2 of the top teams were basically offense only.

I do not care if he went to Bama, I still know talent when I see it. You should not be against him because he went to a certain school either.

I would rather us draft a more proven talent than reach on a DT (when I think our current DT’s will be as good as Still etc) or go after Coples (I like high motor guys who play hard every down). I believe Janoris Jenkins is a guy we could get in the 2nd that is more talented than Dre

If people are willing to draft Blackmon if he drops, then why not AJ (who has better ball skills).. Blackmon had the benefit of being in a spread offense vs Big 12 defenses, and is the same size as Gettis

TBH, this entire post was supposed to just clear the negativty around him.

I never once said he ABSOLUTELY SHOULD be our pick. I am waiting on the combine etc before I make that judgment.

You asked me why we needed him and I responded, that is all. YOU assumed that I said we have to draft him or am endorsing him as the pick we have to make. I never did that.

He never said we should draft him

He was just clearing up some common misconceptions over a player that has been discussed at our pick. Even though our offense was great already, we’d still benefit from improving it.

by JDeLong42 on Feb 12, 2012 10:17 PM EST up reply actions

Like I said...

It’s an assumption, one that I don’t think is far off the mark.

Simply put, you wouldn’t put the effort into “clearing the air” about a draft prospect unless you wanted the team to draft said prospect.

And this belief that Hurney drafts solely on BPA… I really hate to break it but it’s a load of crap. I know it’s been really pumped up around here lately, but simply drafting BPA is just not the way we operate…

by aceofsween on Feb 12, 2012 10:47 PM EST up reply actions

Panther fans may say you don't need him

But Cam Newton is just one Steve Smith Ham string away from regressing…. and i know you think Gettis and Lefaur are really great. And i think they are ook. EVERY NFL fan thinks their 3rd and 4th reciever “would start for anyone”

It is my opinion preventing Newton from regressing is a MAJOR priority…. Saying you don’t need those options is really not looking at this aspect of your team. Because if Newton regresses the perspective outlook on the Panthers all of a sudden changes dramatically….

again this isn’t the same conversation as draft talk because i am not referencing that because of value at 9 and because i think the Panthers need to trade down

by Shankdiddy on Feb 12, 2012 11:24 PM EST up reply actions

Couple things...

First of all, I don’t know where “Lefaur” came from, but it’s LaFell. Did he get a new nickname I wasn’t aware of?

Secondly, I don’t remember even mentioning Gettis or LaFell, but regardless it doesn’t much matter. Our problem is not offense. It’s defense. There no way around that indisputable fact. Drafting a WR does not improve our defense.

Third, it’s all about impact. How much impact will a WR have on our team? Sure, okay, it gives Newton another target and that’s great. But look at what we accomplished without it. We had one of the most potent offenses in the league last year. It wouldn’t hurt, sure…

But look at what we did on defense. We have holes that aren’t going to be filled by returning players. TD might come back, and I hope he does but I don’t know if we can count on it so there’s one question mark. Captain and Butler showed they clearly can’t be counted on to lock down Brees or Ryan, and Hogan is unproven, so there’s at least another two question marks. Martin was god awful last year. Another question mark.

So after that short review, how can you possibly argue that getting a player at one of those positions will less impact than another WR?

by aceofsween on Feb 12, 2012 11:41 PM EST up reply actions

Because you must aviod Newton Trending down
Third, it’s all about impact. How much impact will a WR have on our team? Sure, okay, it gives Newton another target and that’s great. But look at what we accomplished without it. We had one of the most potent offenses in the league last year. It wouldn’t hurt, sure

I look at Manning…and i look at McNabb. Manning was showered with weapons and it worked to help his development…..McNabb at his best he had Owens and it began to develop further…then of course Owens went diva but that is another story… my concern with the Panthers is overall. Yes i understand the balance of your team relies on the defense stepping up. I am aware of what Matt Forte did to you etc. But historically Newtons development could very well depend on who is around him…and it is my opinion (no facts stating here) that Newton is one 33 year old recievers ankle injury away from regression. The great quarterbacks in the NFL also have unstoppable weapons that if you don’t get too the quarterback they are open even if they are covered. McNabb was his best when he had that…. The prospect of Newton Lining up with Gettis (fresh off knee surgury) and ‘Leflae’ should scare you… because as they stuggle to be consistant so will Newton..

So after that short review, how can you possibly argue that getting a player at one of those positions will less impact than another WR?

having a reciever that can make play for you greatly impacts a young qb….and to be honest Newton regressing at this stage would greatly change the perspective and outlook on this teams future at a time when that arrow needs to continue to point up…..and a first round pick doesn’t make or break a defensive turn around….think Dre Kilpatrick would do anything to stop drew Brees? Even if he shut down his guy you still can’t stop everyone else (which too me speeaks to how the Panthers need pass rush before anything else on D but that is another story)

Newton trending up and playing better in his second year with weapons to go forward with would be the Panthers identity….. him forced to run alot or depend on the current recievers on this roster without Smith would be a disaster…. not just too the offense but tooo the confidence of your quarterback.

by Shankdiddy on Feb 12, 2012 11:57 PM EST up reply actions

Okay, well I'm going to stop now...

For a myriad of reasons…

But an FYI… Matt Forte never played for the Panthers. I don’t know where you came from, but you should at least be aware of the roster and our history…

ah... that sentence finally makes sense

Nevermind, I see what you meant about Forte after re-reading that comment several times…

There are

We’ll know what happens in FA in the next few weeks.

But based on what we know right now, Defense has to be a priority. We also know the team prefers to grow through the draft and we don’t have a lot of cap space for expensive free agents. We’ll see how that goes.

It’s not that I don’t understand the desire to find the replacement for Steve (he is getting older) but to me, that is a lesser issue than getting the bottom ranked defense in the league back up to par.

by aceofsween on Feb 13, 2012 10:54 AM EST up reply actions

I understand

I know the defense needs help. But if Rivera/Hurney feel like an offensive player is BPA, then I support the pick. I’d rather us not reach for a defensive player when there are better offensive talents on the board.

by JDeLong42 on Feb 13, 2012 12:52 PM EST up reply actions

See that's just it...

All this talk about taking the “Best Player Available” I think is just flat out hogwash. Over the last 9 years, Hurney has almost always gone Need over true “BPA” and it’s almost always worked out. Gross, Gamble, Thomas Davis, D.Will, J.Stew… All of those were positions of need when there were higher rated players on the board.

Taking the BPA has led us down a pretty murky path with selections that just haven’t panned out (Everette Brown and Jimmy Clausen are just two examples of this).

by aceofsween on Feb 13, 2012 1:02 PM EST up reply actions

Great stuff, MT. That was my first look at Alshon, and I came away impressed.

Uses his size and strength, and shows the QB his numbers like a pro. He was getting mauled against Nebraska; stuff I think would draw a flag at the next level. I loved the back corner fade route… we do need that.

If he stays on the Training regimen and runs a decent 40 (has to beat Jarrett’s 4.62 – 4.67 numbers), then I’m almost sold if he’s there in the 2nd.

Question: How well does he block? Does he mix it up in the run game?

I dont see how he makes it to the 2nd though

If he runs a sub 4.5, he could go higher than Blackmon. He has the best ball skills I’ve seen in college in years.

But he had to do lots of run blcoking the past two years. He is big and physical, using that to his advantage. USC used the zone read a lot the past two seasons (utilizing Marcus Lattimore) as well. AJ is a team player and has done the dirty work blocking more the betterment of the squad. Never complained or became a cancer when his stats went down due to inconsistent QB play.

ive kept my eye on alshon the last 2 years. i really like his game.

but, i feel like rarely is he ever able to break away for any yac after a catch. if he had more seperation initially it wouldt be a big deal but the tackle is made very quickly after the catch the majority of the time. that beng said, its very very hard to keep him from catching it which is very good on its own. it just leads me to believe that to maximize his success he will have to be very aware of where he is on the field at all times. cant catch a pass for 7 yrds on 3rd and 10, get tackled immediately and still pick up the first very often. he will be a very reliable guy in terms of making the catch though imho.

but, i feel like rarely is he ever able to break away for any yac after a catch. if he had more seperation initially it wouldt be a big deal but the tackle is made very quickly after the catch the majority of the time

You just discribed the Lions all time leading reciever in Herman Moore…. he was pretty good

what u dont seem to get is that im not saying that the seperation issue alone wouldmake him unsuccessful.

im just getting at the fact that due to it his game will rely more on his position on the field when he makes a catch. he will have to be more aware of it than someone else who has that speed to create space.

I sorry but i am having a hard time seeing where this differs from some of these other great recievers that you are basically word for word discribing. Herman Moore and Alshon Jeffery could be twins. And i saw EVERY snap of Herman Moores career. He never blew past anyone.. yet he was the career leader in receptions for a season for a LOOOONG time with 129. He dominated even with no real quarterback to throw it too him… he looked kinda slow.. wasn’t really quick infact Jeffery looks quicker…

It really just seems like evaluators and fans misplacing their perceptions of what classifies as open. Because if Herman Moore ran any pattern inside…slant… post..in cut by pure size he was open and a defender is helpless…….anything that causes for him to get on the outside shoulder is dangerous as well and absolutely required safety help or it was 6… Jeffery is a player that would go nuts playing with a quarterback that can acturally deliever the ball in these areas.. a aspect of his game that he is yet to realize because of average quarterback to terrible quarterback play in college.. just ask Steve Smith how much a quarterback up’d his game.

I really don’t fail to understand your point. To be honest i acturally agree with you on some levels. It is just that i am accepting what he is a as player. And i know first hand on dominating a big reciever can be with a really good quarterback…………put it this way. Newton at his very best will be the result of him having this type of matchup avaiable. My opinion

by Shankdiddy on Feb 13, 2012 12:54 AM EST up reply actions

the reason i say u dont understand my point is this.....

im not advocating for oragainst alshon. i like him very much as a player. i am just making a staement that, to me, due to his ability to get space, his game will rely more on hi position on the field when he catches the ball. im not saying that will hold him back or anything of the sort. just saying that in my opinion, for him to maximize his success, he will have to be more aware o that than most receivers have to be. if he does that, he can be as dominant as anyone else in the league. he sure has the hands for it.

…Don’t understand when you see a safety double teaming a guy from 10 yards deep…that’s not really a double team.

Still a much safer pick in the 4th than

Aslon is with our eighth overall imo. Fuller caught enough passes to be A&Ms all time leader in catches. Is the main reason that Tannehill is a top five qb prospect right now. Where is Garcia rated at?

I was saying that a little extra weight while playing doesn't hurt.

Cam has admitted to playing at or around 265 lbs. this year, and his game didn’t drop at all, and no one has called him lazy.

If Jeffery is playing at 240, he wouldn’t lose very much speed, and it wouldn’t make him any more lazy.

Just too add.. Floyd had more than one ARI

And he had to live in the freshman dorms as a condition too stay on the team. That doesn’t bold well if you consider giving him alot of money and expecting him to monitor himself. And from what i have experienced when it comes to ARI and DUI’s it generally doesn’t happen just once. Something dramatic has to happen like a spirital change or a major life change… if not it just happens over and over and over.

Great Point Jake, When Has An Agent Or Trainer Ever Said Anything Bad About His Own Prospect?

The comparisions to Crabtree (something of a disappointment in the NFL so far), Dez Bryant (very good, but maybe not as great as expected yet), and James Hardy (2nd round pick, cut, and not picked up) aren’t that reassuring.

I agree with most everything you've said on here.

The one thing though, is that I feel like there have been an increasing number of flags for offensive PI this past year. If that’s a trend, the NFL will probably start to favor faster receivers who get more separation over the possession guys. Not saying it’s happening, just food for thought.

but that was the nfl over 20 years ago, not todays nfl did you not see the bogus offensive pass interference call on jeremy shockey against the bears this year. your not allowed to touch in todays league.

by gdogg3269 on Feb 12, 2012 8:46 PM EST reply actions

It isn't so much the "touching"

it is the play making ability of a reciever that can high point the football and Jeffery is by far the best in this draft at this. And with a big reciever slants.. posts… in cuts… any pattern where a he crosses a defenders face becomes alot more dangerous because a defender phyiscally can get too the football because of the recievers size and lenght…. Herman more made a living doing this all year long and for a long time had the NFL record for catches in a season because of it… and that wasn’t a different era lol… yea it was 15 years ago or so but still his play style is just like Jeffery llike a twin.. and that mold /style of play works… ask Calvin Johnson.. ask Andre Johnson… ask Vincent Jackson… ask Gram and Gronx and Finnely.. Big targets provide a major match up issue and there simply are no defenders on any NFL rosters currently that can match up with that dynamic… you are left with either you get too the quarterback or they are open….oh and by the way those players read off as the top offensive football teams in the NFL because of that dimension…. that dictates coverage because you have NO choice but to double and or bracket because of the physical mismatch.

by Shankdiddy on Feb 12, 2012 11:33 PM EST up reply actions

im not saying that alshon is bad at what he does

but in the nfl i think he will be more like dwayne jarrett than herman moore. as a reciever you have to have some fluidness to your route running to get seperation. now on goal line that’s were i would agree he could be an asset. but i don’t want to waste a 1st or a 2nd pick for just a goaline reciever.

by gdogg3269 on Feb 12, 2012 9:21 PM EST reply actions

I wouldn't be opposed to taking Alshon Jeffery with our pick.

by Efury on Feb 12, 2012 11:23 PM EST reply actions

with all the pro Alshon talk i have put in...i would not want him to be selected at 9

this is why i think it is important to trade down to get the proper value… but if you want too hit a home run and boost your quarterbacks confidence. A big reciever is a quarterbacks dream because of the larger target window and chance to make big plays with a easy read … and that read is. “if you defend him man to man i am throwing it”.. this forces defenses into situations that vs the Panthers would be crippling….no resourses to play any type of spy…..not enough men to shade Steve Smith.. it is simple a ideal match up that defense would not have a answer for…. 2 recievers that demand doubled either because of quickness or size and the best duel threat quarterback in the history of professional football……..this equals the defintion of dynamic… just what i see. And if i had to play vs the Panthers this type of personel set would force me into zone coverages all day because you don’t dare play man…not only because of the match ups outside but because of Newtons ability to run… this further hurts the defense because then it opens the door for a dramantic improvement by Newton…dinking and dunking with a running back and TE’s is what a defense would leave wideopen…and his development in that area could go thru the roof because of it.

(wow i get on a roll)… i still wound think trading back to get Jeffry would be more ideal

by Shankdiddy on Feb 12, 2012 11:42 PM EST up reply actions

If Alshon Jeffery performs admirably at the combine...

then the possibility of him being a reach or not being justified to be picked at number 9 becomes miniscule. Of course Hurney and Co. would have to review his past performances while in college in the same way that they looked at Cam’s college tape at JUCO and Auburn and analyzed his performance thoroughly however if the talent is there and Hurney views him as BPA he will take him. Hurney stated that they might decide to go O-Line because of injury concerns and strengthening the line etc., or they might want to keep their strengths strong and add more dynamic ability to the offense, or help the defense, etc., etc….which basically spells out to me that he will take whoever is BPA while at the same time be the most valuable to the team.

I like the way you breakdown stuff. I’m new at this. Up until a year ago I wasn’t as much in-tune with the team and football related topics as I am now and I’m still absorbing stuff. It might be because I’m fairly young(still in high school) and really didn’t look into that aspect of football prior to me coming across CSR.

You should post some fanposts more often; I’d like to read your perspective on topics because it seems as if you’re very knowledgeable on these sort of topics.

Wouldn't mind having him but...

I think we have far greater needs with a first round pick than at WR. I’m sure the front office will evaluate and consider all the players our team could possibly use (including the WRs), but in the end I see that first pick being spent on a defensive player. Too many needs on that side of the ball right now.

I do get the draft philosophy of drafting a wide reciever after you have everything else...

It is difficult to generalize that idea to every situation. That is why i feel i can’t really promote that idea as much. But i can discuss a players vallue and in my opinion Alshon is way under valued on so many mocks but i ‘digress’… he has to show it at the combine.

The more I see of Ingram...

and his recent ascension up draft boards, he reminds me of Brandon Graham. Dunno if that’s a good thing yet.

We need a nose tackle.

and at least I don’t pump the corrupt Hurricanes.

But I agree with gdogg, Ingram is the truth

Oh my. RT @RookieDraft: Alshon Jeffery is training at St Vincents here in Indy. Sources say he’s weighing 249lbs + running a 4.88 Forty

Just saw that, not believable but

if true than he should have left last year and been a top pick. And most people that would happen to have character problems (he had none). So unexplainable

B/c he is training in Tampa, it's twitter,

and there is ZERO way his agent or people or even himself would allow him to gain 20+ lbs and get that much slower (.3 less than what he ran at USC the year before last) so close to one of the biggest days of his life. THAT’S WHY.

Saw this: Highly doubtful the report is true, considering Alshon has been in Tampa training since early January.

Quote:
Alshon Jeffrey 4.88 time, is outright untrue. Hearing whispers its being floated from his camp, so he blows expectation away at combine.

If that's the case, they could at least make it believable.

They could say “Alshon’s running a 4.68 in the 40”, and then he could run his normal time, which should be around 4.5 and still make a good impression.

Heath Kline on 107.5 The Game stated that the author of that tweet has backtracked on all “facts” including where he was supposedly timed and when he was timed. The author is FOS, and has a background in music, not football (unless fantasy football counts).

You don't have to convince me it's BS...

I saw him play. I know he’s faster than 4.88, lol. Hell he could probably run a 4.88 40 backwards.

(Ok that last sentence was blatant homerism.)

Maybe he's going to wear a fat suit into the Combine,

then strip it off for the height/weight measurements/physique photo to add extra drama.

I'm not sure how I feel about drafting Jeffery around 8 or 9

But it is really hard to look past 1,517 yards and 9 tds as a true sophomore with Stephen Garcia as his qb. This time last year I didn’t want to draft AJ Green because I was hoping that we could get Alshon this year. And now that we are in a position to draft him, Im just not sure I want to. Although I never put too much weight into it, but the combine is more important for Alshon than for anyone else I can think of. Can’t wait to see how he performs…especially in cone drills.

by mlrupert on Feb 13, 2012 10:37 PM EST reply actions

i dont want him in the 2nd

he has a hard time keeping his weight down, he isn’t fluid in his route running, he can’t get seperation, he isn’t a vertical threat, and he can’t keep his composure when db’s rough him up a bit.too much risk for the possible reward. not when you have such a deep class at the wr position this year. plus i want to see what pilares can do, his 1600 yards and 15 touchdowns out of the slot sounds alot more impressive to me than alshons.
