Newton Lands Gatorade Sponsorship Deal
It looks like the towel on the head thing is gonna pay off. Cam Newton just landed a sponsorship for Gatorade and he actually has a reason for doing so (other than the stew):
"I have used Gatorade since I started playing football and Gatorade products have been an important part of my training and competition regimen for as long as I can remember," Newton said in a release. "As I look to improve my game, what I put in my body is extremely important."
Hey I can't blame the kid for raking in the endorsements as much as he can, at least for reputable products like Gatorade. He certainly found a good use for it in college (link). Soooo...when we going to see Cam in a Bojangles commercial?

Im not one of those who thinks Cam will leave when his contract is up…i don’t think his contract will ever be up. Most Franchise QB’s never are. But signing all these big endorsement deals only proves more big market small market doesn’t matter in the NFL. It isn’t like the NBA or MLB. You can be a face of the league especially at QB regardless who you play for.

isn't green bay the smallest market team?
and they are the nfl’s darling
rodgers is definitely happy as hell over there

It's Different
While I’m sure Cam loves his new city as much as A-Rod loves Green Bay, it’s apples and oranges. Though Cam has proven to be a level-headed and grounded kid – he’s still a kid, a kid who proclaimed his desire to become an icon and one who realizes that pro sports is entertainment. That public acknowledgement, in itself separates him from Rodgers and others.
So, don’t surprised if he does bolt for a larger market, that affords him more exposure and access. Also, don’t be surprised if Phil Knight isn’t devising a strategy to “swosh” in and steal Cam from Under Armor. It’s a different era and team and brand loyalty may be fleeting based on the number of zeros on a check.
The NFL is a different animal
Even small market stars can become highly paid icons.

I don't think Cam would leave for a bigger market team if...
the Panthers have successful winning seasons the next few years. Cam isn’t going to leave a team that is a contender every year, especially one where he already knows the offense. Having said that, I wouldn’t be surprised if he left if the Panthers don’t start winning on a consistent basis.
I have actually read
the article from which the infamous "entertainer and icon " quote was taken. I am too lazy to dig it out of the SI.com archives, so you will have to take my word that he whole thing was a misunderstanding. Cam was talking about the newly signed deal with Under Armour as a platform and an opportunity given to him by God. He was trying to express that it would be more than just having his name used to promote shoes. The problem was in finding the terminology to express this ( he was not an English major at Auburn…). I think entertainer and icon was an attempt to describe what would for a woman be called being a celebrity spokesmodel; what normal kid would not be excited about doing a commercial with Tom Brady and being on a billboard at Times Square…what is impressive is that he saw this as an opportunity to be a positive role model. A guy would not want to describe himself as a celebrity spokesmodel, and Gatorade is calling him a brand ambassador!

I never had a problem with him saying that
The greatest players often become an icon and the fact that he wants to reach that level is admirable. He is the most entertaining qb I can ever remember watching. So I think he is moving towards his goals.
I am always surprised when the media can spin stuff like that into a controversy.

Cam isn't going anywhere
Cam isn’t going anywhere
"The Carolina Panthers, coach (Ron) Rivera, (General Manager) Marty Hurney and (owner) Jerry Richardson, they have everybody’s interest at heart and they’re going to do what’s the best for this team," Newton said. "That’s something I do know and I can attest to. This team, this organization is going in the right direction to be an elite playoff team and contender year in and year out."

Also this:
Though Newton kept a relatively low profile during his first season, the Atlanta native said he loves his new city.
"Charlotte is a place where I feel I can call home now," said Newton, who rents a condo in an uptown high-rise. "I love the environment, the fans. Everybody’s still yearning for a championship to call their own. Years ago, the Carolina Panthers went to the Super Bowl and had the NFC championship. As you go around and you eat dinner and (talk to) fans, everybody’s yearning for another great season."

Its the NFL
Three of the most famous franchises are from Small Markets
Green Bay
Pittsburg
Indianapolis (not counting 2011)
Besides in Football, market size is far less important than actually gaining attention through play.
Look at Tebow; Denver isn’t a huge market but if you have an attention grabbing face, your going to be in the National headlines
Indianapolis isn't the greatest market
Manning has done just fine there in becoming an icon. Win and the icon status will come. If we put together a winning team cam will be here for a long time
"Now I feel like I’m ready to come out of my shell. I know I have the talent to change this game, and I don’t see no ceiling. So I’m not knocking on the door, like tap-tap-tap. I’m gonna kick that door in, like SWAT." - Cam Newton.

Definitely
If Bojangles carried collard greens the Cam combo would be a stroke of genius.

Also i know things are changing because when people see me with my panther gear its always starts and ends with how cam is scary good

IIRC
the under armour deal was for one year.

You're kidding right?
As we speak, Phil Knight is licking his chops. He’d like nothing more to land the biggest fish for the new wave of NFL stars. I think Cam can sell a lot of gear for Nike. There will be a high stakes bidding war for his services. Mark it down !!!
That explains his NFL 32 interview on ESPN...
He managed to work in a REALLY awkward plug for Gatorade while answering a question on the show last night, and I was wondering if he had a deal with them. I’m glad to hear he does, though. It’s good for him financially (obviously), and I think it could be good for the Panthers. National exposure can’t hurt.
And somewhere quietly

Once he wins a Superb Owl nobody will care. MJ rocked a towel constantly on the side line.

But MJ never won a Superb Owl, so why didn't people get mad at him?

Took them long enough to get around to him
Gatorade had most of the top rookies signed last year and they went through the very excellant “Everything To Prove” series. But those guys were all clean, I think they were reluctant to take a chance on Newton.
