Goodell wants to eliminate kickoffs in the NFL (to reduce serious injuries), and has floated a what I think is a crazy idea to do it. He suggested eliminating the kickoff, and just giving the team that wins the coin toss the ball at their 30 yard line, with 4th down, and 15 yards to go, so that they can either punt, or go for it on 4th down. What do you think?
I think that change is too drastic, and all it will windup doing is changing the opening kickoff into a punt. They have already killed a lot of the excitement, with more than half of kickoffs becoming touchbacks.
Here's my first thought/idea. Move the kickoff to the 50 yard line, the kick must go at least 5 yards, but no longer than 20 yards, or you could stretch it to 30 yards. If it goes longer than 20 yards, the receiving team gets the ball at the 30 yard line, and out of bounds kicks still gives them the ball at the 40 yard line. This would greatly reduce the speed of impact, and add even more excitement to the kickoff.
Another idea might be to just require all kickoffs to be punts, since they seem to think those are more safe.
Maybe yoou have a better idea, if so, please post it.
