Panthers vs. Chiefs: Blogger Q&A

Jamie Squire

Welcome to another edition of blogger Q&A. Joel Thorman over at Arrowhead Pride was kind enough to answer 5 questions I sent him about the Chiefs in advance of our Sunday show down for #1 overall draft pick.

You might notice that none of my questions actually involve the game! Such is the real importance of this game in my view. If you have any questions of your own for a Chiefs fan then you can ask them here.

So here we go.

Question 1: If it was up to you would you fire Scott Pioli as GM and if so who would you go after?

Joel: Yes I would fire him. There is no acceptable reason as to why the Chiefs are a one-win team entering December of year four. We can talk about all the reasons why the Chiefs are bad or why they'll be good in the future but this is a results-oriented business and the results for the Chiefs simply aren't there. It's time to move on. As for who I would go after? Geez, I'm not even to that point yet. I'd focus on college scouting directors and guys who run the draft because that's such a critical part of success in the NFL.

It seems judging talent is now a big part of being a good GM in the NFL.

Question 2: It's April 2013, you are on the clock with the #1 pick overall for the Chiefs who do you take and why?

Joel: There's so much time between now and then, and I haven't even taken a good look at all the prospects, but I would take Geno Smith right now. That can, and probably will change as we get closer to the draft and guys move up and down but right now he's the most intriguing prospect to me.

The Barkley slide continues...but how far? I think someone will grab him in the top 10.

Question 3: The Chiefs seem to need a QB. If this offseason your choices at QB were between one of the three which would you take and why: Any current Chief QB, draft a rookie QB (assuming either G Smith or Barkley) or Cam Newton.

Joel: I'd take Cam Newton. He's only in year two and he was a bigger prospect than Geno Smith or Matt Barkley. He had a very good rookie year, but is now hitting a bit of the sophomore slump. I'd still take Cam.

Okay I was pandering to Cam fans with that question and Joel obliged.

Question 4: Is Bowe gone this offseason? If so, do you think there is a chance he would come to Carolina?

Joel: Bowe's probably like any other player, and looking to get paid. The best way to do that is on the open market. But he may not even make it to free agency. The Chiefs can tag him again, costing over $11 million. He's their best receiver -- by a longshot -- so there's the very real possibility that the Chiefs do that. If they do let him walk they can expect a compensatory pick in return, so that's something, but I just have a hard time thinking the Chiefs will let him walk.

If we still had Marty Hurney as GM I would say there is no way we go after Bowe. With a new GM might come a new free agency strategy, one that seeks to add veterans at key positions. Putting the money aspect aside for a moment I could see Bowe having a huge impact in Carolina.

Question 5: It's been thrown around here that Glenn Dorsey is a better fit in a 4-3 than a 3-4. Do you see Dorsey as a Chief 2013 or might he leave?

Joel: I do not see Dorsey in a Chiefs uniform next year. He likely won't be back. He was decent at stopping the run as a 3-4 defensive end but got zero pass rush. Everyone says he'd be a better fit in a 4-3 so I'd be curious what that looks like.

Dorsey might be a more viable option than spending a high draft pick on a DT, provided he can still play.

A big thanks to Joel for his candid answers.
