Streeter Lecka
You have to be kidding me
It's time to dust off that John Kasay jersey you held so dear, because now you can re-purpose it, change the nameplate and celebrate Graham Gano! Today the Carolina Panthers issued their jersey to their new kicker, and yes... he got #4.
If you don't get why this is a big deal, well, you just don't get it. There aren't many members of the Carolina Panthers who one could hold in reverence, but Kasay is one of them. He was with the organization for fifteen seasons, and consummate pro throughout; how many games were losses, if not for John Kasay? I'm not sure we ever should have expected his number to be retired, however to do this is an affront.
Graham Gano wore #4 for the Washington Redskins, but has no huge ties to the number. In Baltimore he wore #7, and in college wore #43. Do you really mean to tell me the only number you could possibly give him was John Kasay's number?
It's nice to know that when Steve Smith finally hangs up his cleats that we'll give #89 to an undrafted free agent.
