Floundering, thy name art Panthers
The Carolina Panthers announced this evening that they have waived kicker Justin Medlock, and signed kicker Graham Gano.
Add Medlock to the list of people who have become scapegoats for a floundering organization. Make no mistake, he wasn't an elite kicker-- but what is this move trying to say? "We would have won, if not for our failing kicker!". All three of his misses came from beyond 40 yards, and while NFL kickers shouldn't struggle to hit those, some sort of understanding should play a role too.
So step right up Graham Gano for your chance to be a part of the fun! The 25-year-old former UDFA last kicked for the Washington Redskins in 2011, where he finished the season missing 10 FGs in 41 attempts, a 75.6% accuracy; the year before with Washington? 68.6%. In case you were wondering: Justin Medlock was at 70% on the year.
Here is a 2011 chart of his hits and misses:
| Overall FGs | 20-29 Yards | 30-39 Yards | 40-49 Yards | 50+ Yards | PAT | ||||||||||||||||||
| Year | Team | G | Blk | Lng | FGM | FG Att | Pct | M | Att | Pct | M | Att | Pct | M | Att | Pct | M | Att | Pct | XP Att | XPM | Pct | Blk |
| 2011 | Washington Redskins | 16 | 5 | 59 | 31 | 41 | 75.6 | 14 | 15 | 93.3 | 5 | 9 | 55.6 | 8 | 11 | 72.7 | 4 | 6 | 66.7 | 26 | 25 | 96.2 | 1 |
Make you feel better? I hope not.
