The NFL trade deadline is Oct. 30th, only 13 days away, please do something Panthers. The whole Cuban Missle Crisis only lasted 13 days start to finish, so that should be plenty of time to workout an NFL trade. Standing pat isn't a strategy, it's just indecission. The Panthers record is 1-4, so don't say this team can't be improved.
Actually, the Panthers did finally make a "rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic" type move today, they cut OG Bryant Browning from the Practice Squad, and replaced him with OT/OG Ray Dominguez, a big body (6-4, 335) from the 2011 draft, out of Arkansas, who lacks both speed (5.48-40, 1.88-10) and power (21 bench reps). Dominguez was a UDFA in 2011, who's never played in an NFL game. About the best you can say about it is that at least it's finally a move, but that's after passing on several more talented players that have been placed on waivers, like TE Wesley Saunders, who was claimed by the Colts today. Maybe they could have found a better O-Lineman, the Bears cut their #14 pick in the 2011 draft OT/OG Chris Williams today, and the Raiders cut the Texans #195 pick this year, OT/OG Nick Mondek (6-5 3/4, 304, 4.84-40, 1.59-10) today (I like his measureables, but after being cut twice, maybe wait and sign him after the season).
In other (later) moves today, the Panthers placed LB Kenny Onatolu on IR (torn tricept, like Ray Lewis), activated S/CB Ron Parker to the roster again, and signed rookie MLB Jerry Franklin (6-1 3/8, 242, 4.63-40, 1.57-10) to the Practice Squad. Franklin had 100 tackles each of his last 2 seasons at Arkansas, with 6.5 sacks in 2010 (2010 - 100 tackles, 13 TFL's, and 6.5 sacks, in 2011 - 101 tackles, 10 TFL's, and 0.5 sacks). While I like the signing of Franklin very much, I still hope they will sign OLB Sammy Brown (6-1 3/4, 243, 4.63-40) off the Rams Practice Squad. Brown had 13.5 sacks, 30 TFL's, and 93 tackles in 2011, and excells in pass coverage.
The Panthers have far less to trade than they did before Kalil and Pollak went on IR (a lot of teams need O-Line help), probably just S Sherrod Martin or a backup WR. Most trades at this time of year involve draft picks, but without a 3rd and a 6th or 7th round pick in 2013, it's very unlikely that the Panthers would give up another draft pick to make a trade happen. Someone suggested today that maybe the Panthers should try to trade Jon Beason, but his high salarly, and uncertain health probably make that impossible.
I've yet to see any rumors of players being on the trade block, but here are a few that have been disapointments so far this season, and might be available:
RG Brandon Brooks (6-5, 346, now 337, 4.98-40, 1.71-10, 36 bench reps), who was the Texans #76 pick this year, but has been a healthy scratch for every game this season, so they can't be very pleased with him. Perhaps the Texans would consider trading Brooks for WR Joe Adams (Panthers #104 pick this year), the Panthers aren't using him now, but the Texans just cut their PR/KR Trindon Holliday, and their #68 pick, WR DeVier Posey isn't playing much at all, while the Panthers certainly need help at RG.
DE Vinny Curry (6-3 1/8, 266, 4.72-40, 1.58-10), their #59 pick this year, who's been a healty scratch all season, or LB Jamar Chaney (6-0 7/8, 242, 4.54-40, 1.54-10, 39 inch vertical), their #220 pick in the 2010 draft, who was a starter last year, but a healthy scratch last week. of the Eagles might be available, maybe for FS Sherrod Martin (they cut FS Jaiquawn Jarrett, their #54 pick in 2011, a few weeks ago). I doubt they would trade Curry (their sack numbers are way down this year), but trading Chaney is possible, and he would be a great improvement over Phillips, while able to backup all 3 LB positions (perhaps even be a future replacement for Anderson).
NT Sammie Lee Hill (6-4, 329, 5.11-40) was the Lions #115 pick in 2009, an is their backup NT, with some pass rush ability. He was a RFA this year, and only re-signed a 1 year contract, for just $1.25 million, so he will be a URFA after this season. The Lions finally got FS Delmas back, but they still might want to trade for S Sherrod Martin (maybe throwing in Fua or Kearse, to balance out the salaries).
Those 3 trade ideas are about all I have, so please post any trade ideas that you might have.
