Panthers sign another offensive lineman
One day removed from losing Ryan Kalil to injured reserve, the Panthers made a roster move today bolstering their depth with G/C Thomas Austin, most recently with the New England Patriots.
First reported by the Charlotte Observer, Carolina is the fifth stop for the 2010 undrafted free agent, who spent two stints with the Patriots, as well as spending time on the Minnesota Vikings and Houston Texans. The former Clemson guard-center was a two-time All-ACC player in 2008 and 2009. He was also named third-team All-American by The Sporting News in 2009.
On each of his stops Austin made it until the final round of cuts, which means nothing in the scheme of things, but it does show that multiple sets of coaches saw enough in Austin to keep him around. In his career he has played in just three games (for Houston in 2011), and will add much needed depth to a Panthers team reeling from the loss of Ryan Kalil.
