Colts to Draft Andrew Luck... and Grass is Green

I guess the Colts decided it was just ot hard to keep a straight face when continually asked who they will select #1overall in the 2012 draft so the Colts have confirmed what we already knew:

Sources say Irsay sees symmetry in the franchise history of draft picks and will not pass on the opportunity to complete it. In 1983, the Colts took John Elway with the No. 1 pick, only to see Irsay's father, Bob, trade the Hall of Famer. Fifteen years later, the Colts took Manning.

Now 14 years after that, Jim Irsay wants to draft his quarterback for the next 12 to 15 years.

Which now begs the question as to what to do with Peyton Manning, if anything at all. I'm not going to speculate but I would imagine nothing will happen until Manning proves he is recovered from the neck injury.

Will they trade Manning? Will they sit Luck?

by rscott94 on Jan 7, 2012 7:42 PM EST via mobile reply actions

I think the Colts will suffer a $28 million

cap hit if traded. So they have 2 options, either keep Manning or release him.

They'll sit Luck

if Peyton can play, that is.

I'm so happy Dalton threw 3 picks to get owned in the playoffs

This officially shuts up the Dalton OROY supporters.
I wish Delhomme played instead of Yates. Would’ve been a much closer game.

Na it wont shut up the Dalton lovers

remember he still led the team to playoffs, winning season. All he does is.wins though, even though I never hear they had the 27th rank schedule. Compare to the panthers who had the toughest schedule in the league.

by adam carter on Jan 7, 2012 7:50 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

We didn't have the toughest schedule

we had the toughest schedule based on 2010 records. Teams have drastically changed since then and it has showed. Our opponents’ records are barely over 500.
He did win a few games but they were against sub 800 teams. Plus people know how much better their defense is than ours was this year.

by Atlantapanther on Jan 7, 2012 9:49 PM EST up reply actions

except for

Texas, Falcons (x2), Saints (x2), Greenbay, Detroit (thats 5 strong opponents in 7 games), Arizona and Chicago are ok teams, and then the remaining 7 games were pure garbage (although the Jags do have a good D, they suck at offense)

That’s far from a weak schedule, that’s five playoff bound teams

I would argue...

that Chicago was a playoff caliber team when we played them. Before Cutler, Forte and Hester got hurt.

Trade Manning

Colts need to rebuild. Start Luck. Manning would net them a nice package and they know teams would give a lot to get him. Jets prime example.

I don't know......

I have a funny feeling Manning is done. I think his career is over because he will never get his arm back well enough to play. I think the nerve damage has done him in. its a shame. He has a few more years in him.

I've had a gut feeling

That Manning will not play for the Colts next year. I guarantee they will try to trade him and see what kind of slew of picks they can get in return. Luck+a couple extra first rounders would make the rebuilding process much easier.

Doubtful

Colts have to eat 28 million from the bonus they owe manning day before the league year. Cant trade manning until AFTER league year starts. Meaning, colts have to eat 28 mil to trade, also meaning a team has to take over mannings contract. Meaning he’s going to get cut

by whiskeytango77 on Jan 7, 2012 11:00 PM EST up reply actions

Ya that 28M

is crazy, but it wont affect there trade after the new league year starts, they have to eat that for this year regardless of whether they trade, cut, keep…. either way they eat it, they will get something for him its a great position to be in the Colts, who gets the chance to have elway, manning and luck, they ruined the elway and threw him away they wont let the same happen again….

by Whitt2k1 on Jan 8, 2012 2:00 PM EST up reply actions

no......

he may not pass any team physical. look…..if he was going to play next year I think they would know by now. I’m no doctor ( I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night) but the actions of the team make me concerned. His age also is a factor. who will spend that much for 2-3 years at best. IMO

A lot of teams.

Think of teams that think they’re only a QB away from a Superb Owl title, the Jets are the obvious team here. In fact, that same team traded for a 35+ year old QB in Brett Favre. Don’t underestimate teams’ willingness to win a Superb Owl, even if it means sacrificing long-term future for it.

Best case, Manning plays and mentors Luck for a few seasons. Worst case, Manning is traded and Luck is given the proverbial baptism by fire. Either way, their QB slot is squared away.

Either Peyton plays next year and pulls a Favre not wanting to teach the guy taking his job. Or the Colts won’t get anything worth Manning or his contract in a trade. It’s a P.R. nightmare either way but at least the Colts get a hell of building block for the future. But he ain’t no Cam-Boy!

I'm not sure I'd be thrilled with Irsay's brand a on 'symmetry'

Draft a HOF QB and them only manage to win one ring in 12 years? Not my idea of success.

If Luck is a good as advertised then they’ll be back in the same spot, if he’s not then they’re the worst team in football again.

If I’m the GM of the Colts then I’m trading that pick for what’s regarded as the going price- three 1st round picks. If that is to a team in the top ten then I’m flipping picks again to ensure I wind up with RGIII and have future assets in hand.

Personally, RGIII + 2 extra 1sts >>>>>>>>>>> Andrew Luck

by James Dator on Jan 7, 2012 11:54 PM EST reply actions

RGIII alone >>> luck in my opinion

ive seen luck play 4 or 5 times this year and he looks like a really really really good quarterback who will have success in the NFL. But i just dont see this “cant miss prospect of the decade” that most everyone is claiming him to be. Luck is obviously the safer pick to take number one but i see RGIII having a greater upside. plus i feel that if you took luck #1 he would be less than thrilled about sitting a few years behind Manning ( IF he’s even healthy ). RGIII on the other hand might be a bit more understanding and would probably benefit more sitting behind manning for a few years while he gets his footwork sorted out.

by aceofsween on Jan 8, 2012 10:21 AM EST up reply actions

i agree

I don’t see the hype in Luck. I don’t see what makes him a better prospect than anyone else in 10 years, and when people describe him, they use the same terminology they used to describe Clausen. He reads the defense from under center in a pro style offense and has good timing, fundamentals and footwork. So did Clausen. That supposedly makes up for not having a great arm. Then when you watch Luck play, he runs the short passing game in college very well, but he doesn’t dominate games. He hands the ball of to his RB as well as Aikman handed off to Emmitt, but I’m not impressed. His ability to throw 3 yard passes in OT on 3rd and 13 is not real impressive either. i think he’ll be pretty good in the pros, but he’s not all that.

by usana_gaines on Jan 8, 2012 12:57 PM EST up reply actions

I'm shocked James!

If I remember correctly, you were one of the many who were crazy about Luck last year. Am I wrong? Or did you opinion change? If so, then why?

by jkp1516 on Jan 8, 2012 3:54 AM EST up reply actions

I think Andrew Luck will be an absolutely tremendous QB, and think he'll be Peyton Manning-like

That being said, If I had to choose between having Peyton Manning with little help around him, or Philip Rivers with a lot of help around him then I’m taking a latter.

I think Luck is the more talented QB, but if we’re talking the difference of 100/100 and 93/100 + two more 93/100 players then I think the decision is easy

by James Dator on Jan 8, 2012 11:10 AM EST up reply actions

are the same so-called experts that said Cam wasnt that good. Just something to think about. I think CSR should have a contest to find an uglier QB than luck. LOL

by oldpanther on Jan 8, 2012 9:14 AM EST up reply actions

not true

I don’t see how you can see he’s a moron when they went 12 straight seasons with at least 100 wins. He just fired the GM, and is looking to hire the Saints director of college scouting to be the GM. I think the Colts actually have some decent talent, but they’re coaching staff was garbage. Why doesn’t anyone know who the Colts OC was? Because Manning ran the offense. But they have Clark, Wayne, Collie, Brown, Bethea, Freeney, Mathis and Brackett. They have talent, but Caldwell waited until 0-13 to bench Painter. Signing Collins was dumb as hell. Maybe they draft Luck, cut Manning, and sign Garrard or Chad Pennington to run the offense for 4-8 weeks.

by jkp1516 on Jan 8, 2012 3:53 AM EST up reply actions

Restructure and Trade or cut him

The former only happens with Manning’s consent. There best bet truly may just be to cut him.

by aceofsween on Jan 8, 2012 10:22 AM EST up reply actions

I think they'll cut him outright

I mean what really behooves Peyton Manning to help the organization at this point?

“Hey guys, thanks for letting me single handedly pull your franchise out of the trash heap… that was awesome. Thanks also for not surrounding me with a decent OL so I injured my shoulder. i like it

But I think that they keep Peyton and he plays, and Luck waits. Have they fired Caldwell yet? He was never any good. I think they might be hurt if they cut Peyton and there is an air of anger around Indy for the lack of respect paid to Peyton. I mean, we even gave Delhomme more respect when he was cut than the Colts care to give Peyton. It seems a lot of people talk about Luck starting right away because he may not be willing to, or want to sit and wait for his shot. That makes no sense to me. He’s gonna be a rookie, and if he feels entitled to call the shots, his attitude will get him out the league in 4 years or less. I think either he’s the TO of QBs, or people are making stuff up about his personality. It’s possible that he is excited to learn from Peyton, and to spend some time learning from the sidelines, but no one knows that. Also, I could see Peyton retiring because of his injury, and becoming the QB coach or assistant OC. Peyton has accomplished so much, that he has no real reason to keep playing if he’s not fully healed. I mean, nobody else has an ego so big that would keep playing like Favre did. Peyton on the sidelines full-time coaching up Luck could make Luck a great QB. Luck starting from day one on his own, with no running game, is a disaster.

by usana_gaines on Jan 8, 2012 1:12 PM EST up reply actions

I agree with James, I think they will cut him. They don't have much choice, really, without taking a huge cap hit.

As it is, if they cut him, they’re going to take a $16mil hit in 2012. They sucked for Luck, and will Suck with Luck for a few more years.

So much to be done, and so few people willing to do it for me.

Alright...

the poor OL has just been recently, Jeff Saturday, Tarik Glenn, Ryan Diem, all were/are excellent Colts OL that helped make Manning great. Let’s not forget Edgerrin James, Marvin Harrison, Reggie Wayne, Dallas Clark, all players drafted to help Manning. Granted Manning probably helped them as well, but you can’t say they didn’t try and surround him with talent. And since when did they say they were moving on from Manning? If I were them I’m jumping at the chance to have Andrew Luck learn from Peyton Manning, what better way to guarantee his success? Now that the Polians are gone maybe they can start to consistently hit on some draft picks, and that will be a huge help to pull them out of the hole they’re in.

Yes I'm a dude.

Just because he can see the plays and make them doesn’t mean he can coach another guy into doing it. I think Manning was so good because he knew what to do after getting to the line, not because of plays called before they lined up.

But you also have to be ready for the unexpected. Look at us for example, I think if CAM was hurt, Derek Anderson has enough talent to not lose games, and knows the offense pretty well. He’s no CAM, but he’s closer to CAM than Painter was to Manning. I also think he got fired because of how awful Caldwell is.

Luck

I will wait until draft to see what indy. does. I don’t beleive a word any of these guys say until actual draft. As far as Manning, If he is heathy, they will resign him and he’ll play.

I think what needs to be discussed is will Luck pull a Elway if they choose him. I’am sure he don’t want to sit on bench for next 2-3 years. If he refuse to sign. does he re-enter draft next year or is he still proprety of Indy. I’am not sure. As far as trading manning. I think that would be very hard to pull off. Manning would want a 3-4 year contract and mega bucks. If you were a team, would you be willing to do this knowing he’s one more neck injury from retirement.

by oldpanther on Jan 8, 2012 9:06 AM EST reply actions

I'm pretty sure that team holds the rights to that player.

Got curious about it so tried looking it up too. Only thing I was able to find was where Bo Jackson had refused to sign with the Bucs after being drafted first overall, then getting drafted in the 7th round the next year by the Raiders.

by LeAnneS on Jan 8, 2012 11:30 AM EST up reply actions

He would then be allowed to enter next years draft,

But almost assuredly the colts would trade the rights to him away for a large package before his year was up to keep them from losing the 1st rounder for nothing anyone know if there is a comp pick the next year when this happens???

by Whitt2k1 on Jan 8, 2012 3:10 PM EST up reply actions

Shocking!!!

I was sure they’d stick with the old man for 2 more years instead of 10+ more years of the “next” great QB.

This is how I roll, animal print pants out control.

by southtunnel on Jan 8, 2012 9:16 AM EST reply actions

I think the Colts would be remiss to not even consider trading the top pick.

If they could get a really nice deal, something similar to that 3 first rounders and 2 second rounders report, they should consider it. People want Luck to be exactly what Manning as been for the Colts, and I think he is not as sure a bet as people think. Don’t get me wrong, a kid with those skills will be competitive, but I don’t think he will ever reach the “Brady, Rodgers, Brees” threshold.

Remember, the Colts are a small market team; they looked for bargain players to put around Peyton so that they could afford some potent offensive weapons. Dallas Clark is getting up in age, and with two “star” QBs on the roster, where will the money come from to add some new pieces for Luck?

If they do draft Luck, they will be fine, but I wonder if it is truly the best move.
